I'm going to (try to) post a classic theatrical cartoon each day. Feel free to watch along, or just check in from time to time to catch up on several at once. In honor of January 1st, I'll first focus on newcomers to the Public Domain. Today's picture is the first cartoon to come out of the Terrytoons studio, Caviar (1930). I THINK he has scans up to the end of Anno 16 so scans from 17 (ie: 1993) and on would be very very helpful for the project. If anyone can point me to where, that would be great. I miss /a/vatar. There was still good content being produced long after the shows have ended. Plus with a resurgence happening thanks to the newly created Avatar Studios and the upcoming Netflix adaption. It would've prospered.

This is a thing I had on a "watch later" list for years, after discovering it on the Internet, which I finally got one day (and it was amazing). Apparently a really good composer wrote the score, as well as really quality songs. That was good enough to remember. So I watched it, and I liked it. Yes it's dated, but in a way I like. It came from a mind of a visual genius and a lover or classical music, and a man very much stuck in the 60s/70s, Mike Jupp. He put together a team and somehow managed to get funding tow make 2 seasons, and lucky enough to get commissioned for 2 more. Oh, and it's a show from Britain. The premise is that on a planet (just a planet) one half is the Land of Dreams (see: utopia) with little to no conflict and the residents getting pleasant dreams at night from a wizard, and the other side being the Land of Nightmares (clever name) with a population being more-or-less parody of working class british men ruled over by lord of all nightmares. Pretty much every episode the lord of nightmares sends his very british minions to the other side of the planet to steal the Dreamstone, a dream transmitter or close to it, to send everyone constant nightmares. The underlings frequently succeed, but thwarted at the end by various means. If you look at the show from a perspective of an average 21st century young adult viewer, it may seem bland or too weird to like. But if you use your imagination a little, and see it as a children's cartoon made by a psychedelic rock band from the 60s, you'll get it. So I've been looking around the internet for some old obscure forgotten cartoons and I manged to find some episodes of Patrol 03 a forgotten gem of a show form the late 90's about cops stopping their evil police chief form killing the mayor so far I've only found the french and Spanish version of the show but not the English dub which is sad because I remember watching the English dub as a kid in late 90's early 2000's. So if anyone knows where I can find any episodes of the English dub that'd be great. Or if you have any other obscure shows you wanna share go right ahead.

There used to be semi-plausible excuses for why modern animation was so crappy (1970-1990): It costs too much so you have to have tons of executives who want you to aim at the lowest common denominator. You have to send all the animation overseas. It has to be done too fast. These aren’t very good excuses but they are something at least. However I can’t figure out any excuse at all for why the newspaper funny pages have gone to hell. Each artist can do a whole strip himself-only 4 panels a day. They get paid a mountain of money. You ever find it weird how we don't really have proper "Shojo" series? Like the last real one I'd classify as fitting the niche properly is like Star Vs and that came out like nearly a decade ago at this point. It's extra bizarre cause companies like Disney have clearly been trying to corner the girl market with their push for more female MCs, but none of them really feel like they're actually trying to appeal to your average teen girl. Amphibia is more Shonen with female main characters than Shojo and Owl House doesn't even try to get the average girl interested. Even series like Fionna and Cake are more "Josei" in it's attempt to capture the "middle age woman" experience. Like why is there such an inability to make series that would actually appeal to teen girl. Is it really that hard?

Has anyone else been noticing the younger fans for comics (yes they exist, they got into comics through piracy during the pandemic and tend to be ESLs) are much bigger advocates for adaptation accuracy than older fans these days? They're much more critical toward the DCAU's portrayals even and outright credit it to damaging certain character's reputations

So.....Omniverse is ending and rumor has it that this is gonna be the last series of the Ben 10 franchise gotta say I am disappointed that this is how it's ending seeing as while Ultimate Alien wasn't anything to write home about at least it didn't treat viewers like absolute dumbasses like Ominverse does. Not to mention the fact that all those flashback episodes in Omniverse are just giant shitty retcons of the continuity because you know the retcons in Alien Force and Ultimate Alien worked so well right? Most the kids that grew up watching Ben 10 have moved on, the fanbase has split and the TV ratlins for Omniverse have been abysmal.

It's been a while since we've done a Sonic-adjacent comic (unless you count Klonoa), so let's do one with art from an Archie and IDW alumni! Written by Jesse B and drawn by Matt Herms, Sticky Floors ran from 2006 to 2009. Towards the end of this comic Herms got his start in mainstream comics with Sonic the Hedgehog 185, which was released in February 2008. Sticky Floors was originally hosted on snafu-comics.com, but since February 2018 has been removed from the site. Not that that's stopped me before! Oh, and I've upscaled these images since they were a little small. Starring Colin (the grumpy blond one) and Wesley (the cute one in the herpes shirt), Sticky Floors is all about their (mis)adventures as they try to get laid!
