I was hoping to put this off until the big update happened but it looks like Hussie is backing down from that so I guess this is fine. Hussie barely worked on it during the gigapause so I'm expecting this to go on for yet another year.
I'm just so tired. This thing had better be worth it.
I stopped caring about Homestuck a long while ago. By the time the beta kids enter the game I just got tired of the incredibly unnecessary clusterfuck the webcomic has become. It's fandom didn't helped either, but that's beside the point.
>>230201 Clearly you're just not cool enough to recognize true media-negativity when you see it. I have mastered the art of hating things to such a degree that you are unable to perceive it as anything but a put-on, because your own ability to hate is so pedestrian and watered-down in comparison. Come back when you get on my level and truly understand what it is to hate a webcomic. On that day you may finally be worthy of being considered cool.
Well, no, I take that back. You will finally be worthy of being considered less uncool. Coolness will still be beyond your reach for a good long while yet, and it is cruel of me to get your hopes up that it's as short a journey as all that. But you must take baby steps if you are ever to climb that mountain. Go, young Anon, and learn to hate all the world's creative output.
Everyone is just bitter about the Gigapause. And honestly, I can't blame them. I even gave it to despair and accepted that Homestuck wasn't going to update for YEARS.
I'm ecstatic due to the Rapture announcement came on the same day as the Korra Book 4 Trailer.
>>230206 Indeed. Hype levels will be high when the updates start flowing again. But even when the updates were flowing almost a year ago, /mspa/ was a very slow board. A single thread for Homestuck will suffice.
I'm just gonna wait until the comic is finished before I start reading it again.
I'm aware that will be a while but I'm not in a rush. I still like Homestuck but I'm also still tired of it, maybe by the time it actually ends I'll be ready to just enjoy it again.
So, kind of a weird question to ask this late but I remembered John got some of LE's powers. And then I remembered how each kid 'played' Sburb
John was passive Rose rebelled
Dave actively abused the system Jade passively played the system
So now that John has literal game breaking powers do you think we're going to eventually see some turn around? Because he is still for the most part doing the same thing he's always done, i.e. wandering from one event to the next with a clue of what's going on.
How could you have forgotten the amazing shitstorm this set off on Tumblr/Twitter.
Apparently people are saying Hussie is racist because he's makin' fun of japan/anime. I believe it because I've seen people say a lot of stupid things, particularly during the CAUCASIAN update.
>>230754 This page was changed after a massive uproar about racism. CAUCASIAN was replaced by PEACHY and (IIRC) the skintones were removed completely.
>>230769 >people are saying Hussie is racist because he's makin' fun of japan/anime lol. Lets see if the if the Huss backpedals again or just ignore these dunkass accusations. Some people just don't have a sense of humor.
>>230769 >>230771 Keep in mind that this is all ignoring the fact that when he changed it, it wasn't because of the cries of racism, but because of the realization that the joke was one that only worked in the moment it was made, and that archive viewers who weren't part of the fandom at the time it was made would have had no interpretation to make that would have made it even make sense.
I'm surprised people still care about this, specially considering this was an hiatus of almost a year. You can't tell me this "giga-pause" didn't made lots of people to stop caring HS.
>>230771 According to Hussie, he actually changed it more in response to people harassing the complainers than the complainers themselves. Less tumblr being mad and more "LOL you're such an idiot for being mad!"
It's the same issue "Gamergate" has suffered under, where nobody wants to be associated with the same side that /pol/ users have aligned with, regardless of any actual merits that side might hold.
>>230829 ...I don't know. Right now, Caliborn sees himself as untouchable. There's no REASON for him to create a more powerful version of himself, in the form of Lord English, right now. His self-insert fanfiction is enough at the moment. Having a humiliating loss at the hands of a huge dork would be a great impetus for him to do so.
But then again, we have reason to believe that Jake will be the one to give him his "first defeat." Unless that was Lord English's first defeat, rather than Caliborn's.
Either way, I wouldn't consider it impossible that John wins this fight. There is support for either outcome right now. I am certain it won't be the last we hear from Caliborn even if John wins. And I am FAIRLY certain (but not completely certain) it won't be the end of John's involvement in the story if he loses, either.
>>230842 John is kind of un-killable in a sense at this point. Aside from his god tier shenanigans, there's probably a shit ton of Johns with the same space powers, hopping from time line to time line.
As far as this fight goes, I wouldn't be surprised if John wins or loses this fight. It's setting up for him to lose, since he is John after all and Caliborn is simply the strongest character.
But both John and Caliborn are acting like idiots, I'm betting the most on a humorous resolution or John getting zapped away before something happens. I mean the whole tone of the event is completely silly.
>>230843 >I mean the whole tone of the event is completely silly. But then again, in Homestuck that means nothing. This is a comic where death is heralded not by rousing final words and a dramatic death rattle, but the word "dead" in big, silly letters and goofy expressions on the characters' faces.
>>230844 That's true, but even most deaths have some kind of tension or emotion. Even the dead trolls had a fair amount of build up (this first time they died anyway, after that it didn't matter)
of course that's not to say that I think john won't die assuming he loses, at least not for good. Nor am I expecting Caliborn to die even if John does win.
I think some neat opportunities could arise is Caliborn doesn't kill John. Like John could get some scars and disfigurations mirroring Caliborn's.
I kind of bring that up because I feel as if John is getting played as some kind of bizarro-Lord English. John has some of his powers already. But adding to that John is already goofing off in the meta of the comic, like LE. Both characters aren't tied to either particular continuity now.
Additionally, Lord English is a huge fucking man child, looking at John, he's seems to be the most normal human kid, he doesn't really have the personal issues the others have, one could argue he's the most mature of the kids. And assuming the growing up theme of homestuck still has merit, it could be important to John to be mature, especially compared to the one guy in the comic how was never able to grow up.
It's all theory on my part, but John could potentially be a more benevolent analogue to English
>>230957 I don't know man. I'm in the "shitsfukdup" camp at the moment and we'll just have to live with the horseshit that just occurred. Not to mention we got all those just/heroic death flashes. Also, Dream Bubbles.
>>230969 Assuming John doesn't retcon it all, or this doesn't turn out to be a Doomed Timeline? (which I think would be a huge cop-out in either case)? * Someone spills blood on Kanaya's ashes and she comes back to life, is pissed off. ( Classic vampire lore for vampires that are dusted, so reasonably possible ) * Karkat's Blood Powers awaken and he does some sort of bullshit to survive his fall into the lava. Possibly this ties into ressurecting Kanaya. ( I honestly have no reason to believe this other than that I want to ) * Davesprite becomes Alpha Dave ( I think this one is almost a no-brainer) * Rose and Terezi survive. Terezi probably has a permanent scar or injury. ( I doubt they would have survived the Flash if they were going to die in the next update ) * Dave, Jane, and Jake join Jade on Team Calliope, or possibly some of them join Team Vriska. (Another no-brainer)
>>230976 It certainly looks that way. But we also know that Hussie is unaware of a single timeline in which Gamzee dies. So if he *is* dead, that means we're in territory uncharted by the author. Or the fictitious counterpart of the real-world author who in-universe is responsible for the story being told.
>>230975 Even if he's dead, he still has his own time travel ability. It's not like we can't wind up with an earlier part of his timeline that's destined to go back eventually and get chainsawed.
Also, it has just occurred to me: if the Condesce really does have Meenah's Thief of Life powers, and decides she still needs any of the heroes who just died alive, we may have options. Hell, if nothing else, she could claim the Ring, put it on Jane's corpse, and then have Jane bring everyone she wants alive back to life.
>>231003 Aranea isn't confirmed dead. The Condense could kill her, but once she steals the life ring (and as the thief of life of course she will) she could easily just browbeat Aranea into being another one of her pawns to make up for getting in the way of her plans. Condy's Dancestor being friends with our interloping book lover might mean she'll be seen as familiar somehow. It's been a long time since she's seen a friendly troll face anyway, what with running Earth for LE.
>>231005 Kind of hard to revive someone when you don't have anything like an intact body anyway. What would she aim her trident at, the general area he fell into the lava? Speaking of which, I don't see her bringing Kanaya back too easily for the same reason.
>>231031 A fair amount of tension building. Lot's of shit about to happen. This flash was the conclusion of that. And it ended horribly for damn near everyone.
So, something is finally happening and almost everyone is dead. Too bad dead doesn't mean that much since there are "ghosts" anyways and we'll see them around.
>>231091 Yes, but I think the question is whether she was still alive after the ring was taken off of her, and therefore whether this counts as Double Death or simply a second Regular Death.
Anyone else feel like this comic is at it's absolute best when there's bodies dropping everywhere? Like the Midnight Crew Intermission, Jack's recent jail break thing, Gamzee's rampage on the meteor, Bec Noir in general?
There's something I really like about all the fast paced violence and people exploding like blood pinatas.
>>231129 That maybe so, but her eyes went from natural troll eye color of yellow to dead white? Hussie is clearly showing us that the removal of the ring made her a ghost again and then she died... again.
>>231303 Well yeah, he's finding out that all of his friends and dancestors are dead and just watched one of his best friends die right in front of him.
He just had a huge ghost party with the trolls and knows about a ring that brings people back to life so it's not like death means shit-all in Homestuck anyways.
So this recent News Update further proves that the mind control angle for Jane and Jade was a fucking stupid decision. Because Hussie's explanation is total bullshit.
>>231324 Makes perfect sense to me. Homestuck has been fairly consistent in the characterization of the idea that there aren't good and evil people, just people who decide to do good and people who decide to do evil. The Condesce has flipped off Jade's and Jane's social inhibitions, and forced their loyalty, but both of them are making decisions for themselves. Jade's whole feels jam with Dave about Davesprite made it clear that Jade was still the one at the helm.
>>231324 I can't help but think all these rules are not based on what Hussie thinks should be just or heroic, but rather what would allow him to kill characters he needs killed.
>>231329 John needs to retcon everything because it's been foreshadowed that he would eventually do so and fuck everything up in the process. Check this shit out: http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=6&p=008263
>JOHN: i can't seem to control the jumps. >JOHN: maybe that's for the best though. >JOHN: if i could control it, and tried to use it to my advantage, i would probably just make a huge mess of things. >TEREZI: Y3S, YOU WOULD
See, that's Terezi being fully aware of how John's mind works as per her Seer status, stating for the record that John would eventually fuck things up if he got control of the jumps. We already know that he gets control of the jumps because future John came back and talked to John and told him to find Roxy, and that was not a John that our John has become yet. So John has to intentionally perform a Retjohn that will in the process fuck things up. That requires a pretty big reason for him to Retjohn everything--which this has provided.
So yes, a Retjohn coming is inevitable. But I do not think it is going to be a solution. I think it is going to get them in even deeper water here than they already are.
>>231331 Are they though? Death is a slap on the wrist in the Homestuck universe. All those dead people, right now, could go join Calliope's ghost army for whatever it is she is about to do--clearly the story is setting her up for something. And Jade alone might well not be enough. Or, the Condesce grabs the Life ring, puts it on Jane's finger, and she brings everyone but Karkat back to life. And Karkat joins Meenah's army like he already agreed to.
Meanwhile, we have no idea what a Retjohn is going to accomplish. It might lead to the very thing that results in Caliborn being able to become Lord English in the first place. Or it might close the door on one of the options they had about how to defeat Lord English forcing them to go through a MUCH more painful/arduous process for it.
Or the biggest issue facing us: Aranea was trying to create a doomed timeline. What if she succeeded, and Retjohning it is what turns this current timeline INTO the Alpha Timeline?
>>231330 John can retcon something as many times as he wants though. This isn't a time-loop. He can keep trying until he's satisfied with the end result.
>>231332 Calliope doesn't have the ghost army. Vriska and Meenah have she ghost army and LE is burning thousands of souls at a time because he's hunting down Calli and the army is all bunched up together.
If anything being dead is the worst place to be right now.
>>231345 I meant the ghost army she is going to need for whatever task she's about to set out on. It's a bit of conjecture--perhaps Jade is the only companion she needs for whatever she's about to do. But my gut tells me she is going to need more friends than just Jade.
>>231347 It doesn't. That is the conjecture part. She is clearly about to do something--I think that part is uncontroversial. The fact that Jade has joined her there suggests it is something she cannot do alone, unless all she needs is moral support. All these deaths need to have happened for a reason, and we know of a dead girl who is about to do shit, so I am conjecturing that whatever she is about to do may very well require a party of adventurers.
>>231369 Ehhhh. Her suddenly being the only one to to have the resolution to keep going, just after she couldn't get her shit together and blamed other people for it, seems a bit forced.
>>231376 Who would have guessed that someone who went around playing Miss Justice all her life could keep it together when all she has to do is walk up to someone and act judgmental?
>>231450 I doubt it's going to be that simple. More likely, THE CHOICE will be Typheus laying out a series of events for John, one where he survives and one where he doesn't, and the one where he survives is the one where all his friends stay dead. And John, being who he is, doesn't even think about it.
The impression I've gotten from past references to THE CHOICE suggest that players who actually make it and die because of it often *don't* die at their Denizen's hands. Like for example there was a strong suggestion that when Hephaestus gave Davesprite the Choice, Davesprite could have chosen to have Hephaestus fix him instead of the sword. And Davesprite decided against it. Theoretically this should have mean Davesprite would die because of his decision, and maybe he still will, but he wouldn't have been killed by Hephaestus per se in that scenario.
>>231451 Yeah but Jade is presently telling a story about how John died.
I'm assuming it's either the same John, or we're going to get more exposition on the other John who actually was given THE CHOICE and killed by Typheus in Davesprites's timeline
I can't even tell if this scene was a callback/joke to John and Karkat's convo after he revived from being killed by Jack.
>CG: IS THAT YOUR GAME, EGBERT. HAVE YOU HAD YOUR EYE ON MADAME LALONDE, AND YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR A CONVENIENT RESURRECTION OPPORTUNITY TO BUST OUT YOUR MOST PASSIONATE SMOOCHMOTIFS KEPT IN RESERVE? AND IN FRONT OF HER DEAD FEMALE "OFFSPRING" NO LESS! JUST SHAMEFUL.
>>231493 It's hard for that not to happen when Terezi is actively commenting on their awkward romantic tension and forcing them to hug.
John not letting Roxy just let herself waste away is pretty nice to. Plus her talking to Nix will likely be important. And she very might well be able to 'preserve' herself whenever John retcons stuff, making it so they'll be the only ones with knowledge of what happened.
Dude, that guy is long gone. He probably won't last long in this glitch shit anyway. He just happened to be outside the massacre, but he's likely not presently relevant because of his survival.
Terezi and Roxy on the other hand most definitely are. Even if Terezi is still alive for motivation and exposition.
>>231550 I doubt it's as simple as that. For starters, who's to say that it's only alternate versions of himself that get murdered by his deal with Typheus?
>>231552 JADE: she told me that the dreams of a denizen draw from the same well of potential from which every conceivable possibility arises JADE: the same place skaia gets its power from JADE: so if an agreement with a denizen is reached in one reality, that same denizen in another reality could become aware of it, and respond accordingly JADE: it seems that john, somewhere, in some other plane of existence, had made just such an agreement JADE: she said that the john i knew, like herself, was only one version of a person JADE: there was a different version of john from another reality poised to play a more significant role JADE: you see, the john from that reality in an act of desperation had gone to see typheus, and struck a bargain with him
>>231550 That could happen with every denizen, though, and is possibly something that rarely causes deaths in alpha timelines due to the choice being a defining aspect of it. It might not even be a thing the player is informed of, you just deal with the denizen and all other yous are offed to keep things streamlines.
>>231739 Windy thing powers presumably don't involve faint traces of spittle. Or the kind of static discharge risk you'd get from a vacuum cleaner, for that matter. Unless he blows clouds into it or something, anyway.
>>231771 >>231772 Hey man, if the Huss is gonna re-use assets, he should at least make sure it doesn't shown the non-intended parts of the asset he is re-using.
Slightly dissapointed that the void background is actually coded as solid white, rather than being transparent and taking advantage of the white background.
Argh. Time chamber aborted. John can't hang out for one second. I feel like this back fire on him in one way or another. Also I wonder what Roxy is gonna do with that sword.
>Felt PS to be continued Great. Can't wait for even more Felt and Andrew's writing.
>>231854 After the number of times I've wanted Homestuck to hurry up and get on with itself, it's a weird feeling to want a scene to last longer than it does. I don't care about shipping at all and I've never really been invested in the romantic side of Homestuck at all, but something about Roxy's and John's interactions just feels nice to read.
And yeah, I'm getting strong backfire vibes from this plan. I wonder if this is gonna be how the ring ended up in the dream bubbles with Huss in the first place. That hasn't been explained yet, right?
>>231859 >something about Roxy's and John's interactions just feels nice to read.
Someone on /co/ mentioned that it might be because that John and Roxy are just two friendly and genuine people talking to each other. There's no passive-aggressive jabs or withheld information, or sarcasm. It's two people who enjoy each other's company talking. Being the only two people alive after Game Over may also have something to do with it.
Speaking of which. I wonder what the full extent of the Denizen's "feel our loss" thing is.
>>231981 The army was only to get Lord English to blow up Paradox Space until their map was complete. Now that they have the treasure, they don't need it anymore.
>>232080 It's gonna lead into finding out how the other Roxy died, I presume.
ROXY: that either i could stay behind and vanish into nothingness forever, and everyone in the new reality would inherit all the bigtime responsibilities, including a version of myself who had no memory of any of this and never experienced all the loss and sadness i just went through ROXY: or ROXY: i could go with you ROXY: but in doing so, everyone i loved would know that loss instead
>>232220 the fact that we've been doing a rotation kind of thing in the last week or so. every update focuses on a different person, before cycling back around.
>>232309 A decent chance? Roxy is currently unstuck from canon. I'm sad that Davesprite was killed off-hand when (other? beta-alpha?) John assploweded on LoWaS.
How likely do you think it is that Game Over Dirk is still alive? He wasn't present in Jane's story, and last time we saw him, he was staring at his denizen's statue. I wouldn't be surprised if Yalbadoath told him to go to LOWAS, just like Nix told Roxy.
He might have been given the same choice as Roxy, but decided to stay behind knowing he would double up the doomedness of everyone in the main timeline if both of them went.
>>232310 >>232311 Roxy is unstuck from Canon at the moment, but not in the same way that John is. Eventually, she will go back to being canon. She's taking a roundabout way to get there, but our Roxy will presumably join the timeline that will become Alpha eventually, thus becoming the new Alpha Roxy. But if that happened BEFORE the event we saw in Jane's memories, it could still be our Roxy.
I think most likely it is not our Roxy that we just watched die, but it's not a 100% chance that it wasn't.
I'm digging these updates. Shooting all over the different events that have happened in the comic reminds me of that part in Earthbound, and other old RPG games, where you revisit each area you've been to just before the final stretch. It's really nice to see that side of Homestuck's inspiration come into the fold again.
>>232447 >/hsg/ >in-charge of opinions/anything And don't give me that sass about Homestuck General is banned on /co/ prime. The "Homestuck update thread"s are just /hsg/ with a small amount of paint.
>>232452 I don't think you've seen the threads, if you think there's no difference. Sure, it's still full over over reactive idiots. But there's next to no shitposts compared to what HSG was
Vriska Serket died on 06/08/11 That was three years ago. Andrew spent the last three years writing a story that would justify bringing Vriska back to life.
>>232584 I wonder how you ever got into Homestuck in the first place, since you clearly don't get the point of the whole thing if you're whining about that. Homestuck is about fucking with the rules of narrative. It was an expansion of the concepts explored in Wizardy Herbert. To fully explore that, John's powers were central, and exploring the full ramifications of those powers means something major like the revival of a character who was established very strongly early on to be one of the characters with the most potential to turn things around in her favor.
Like I would get it if you just don't like Homestuck. That's fine. But this is exactly the same story you've been reading since the beginning.
>>232606 When I started reading homestuck we weren't at the point of writing cosmic horseshit to justify rewritting portions of the comic that never needed to be rewritten in the first place.
but then why not bring everyone back? why spend two years writing characters when ultimately it's only john and by extension Roxy who will maintain any developments? why ever bother to kill vriska when she was gonna be brought back? why is she essential to the story now but not then?
>>232608 I guess my only answer to that is: read more post modern literature. And if you don't like post-modernism, learn to identify post-modern works before you get invested in them. Because this shit was always in the cards and it was obvious as early as Act 5 that this was the sort of story Hussie wanted to tell.
Does any remember Problem Sleuth? I remember Problem Sleuth. If you recall how important death was in Problem Sleuth? Yup. There is your answer considering Hussie and death. The Huss can't live down a callback if he can... um... remember it to call back to it. If this is good or bad is not something for me to call.
I started reading Lord of the Rings recently, and in the early chapters of Fellowship Aragorn is called Strider and carries a half-broken sword.
I'm sure someone has noted this before, but I never saw it, and man, it seems weird that such a huge reference wasn't one of the ones people constantly pointed out.
>>233250 Not sure if this is a spoiler for you, but that sword is the same one that was used by Isildur to cut the One Ring off Sauron's finger. And the broken übersword carried by Liv Tyler is called the Royal Deringer. I don't know how much about the Strider/broken sword stuff is coincidence, but that one is definitely a reference.
>>234222 I don't think I even understand what's being censored. Sure it's weird looking, but why censor it? Is it offensive? Who's being offended by silly jokes about fake aliens?
>>234222 I usually never get into the whole "tumblr is full of overreacting idiots" considering how much I usually like browsing it, but c'mon now. What exactly is offensive/triggering/whatever about that page? There's now a warning before the whole story warning about "sexual assault" or something
>>234222 edit: just browsed the tag. Apparently people are upset not just because of Tavros turning into a jizzing mushroom, but because jeff and bro dressing up as the fantrolls is transphobic.
>>234230 >Honestly, I think pixellating the whole thing just makes it look funnier. So do the people behind the comic, apparently, and they've said as much.
It's one of those situations like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, where the censorship actually makes the joke so much funnier that you prefer it *with* censorship to without.
>>234278 Oh, I just noticed Hella Jeff (or is it Sweet Bro? I can never remember which is which) had his make-up removed. I think I'm more confused about the fuss over that than Tavros becoming a brown banana fountain.
