Steven Universe: Thread 6 (WE'RE BURNING THROUGH 'EM)
Previous thread>>236215
Show's coming back some time in August, apparently.
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3706527&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=296#post448010627
>Ian Jones-Quartey: The extended intro was intended to be enjoyed outside of the show. So if you're holding off on watching it because you think it might spoil an episode... you can relax. It exists separate from the show and will be released outside of it. Just watch it.
Hopefully we'll be able to watch it in full quality sometime soon.
Think the single episodes will be as lore heavy or wil that be reserved for the bombs?
>>237371
Maybe not as heavily, but still sprinkled here and there just as the first season. Going deep into origins and backstory feels like it should be saved for bombs and specials.
>>237371
"bombs" are how CN has bren premiering new episodes for over 8 months now. For just about every series.
>>237377
Yea but Steven Universe seems to be working them as a serial plot. All of these interconnected with Pearl breaking trust of the group and the progress towards gaining it back and even then if didn't really fix things.
Hey, remember this thing? The evil-looking scroll that was burned, then became a sentient smoke cloud that turned breakfast into a giant monster. The thing that, unlike the gem monsters and the Red Eye, hadn't gotten any sort of explanation.
Well, it turns out there is a story behind it.
http://joethejohnston.tumblr.com/post/124934472083/hi-sorry-this-has-been-bugging-me-for-a-while
>to make pigments you use certain minerals to achieve different colors. Those different pigments get use in inks and paints… see where I’m going with this…
>>237461
It could go several ways. Either it was some sort of cremation monster used from the remains of the gems of several Crystal Gems, or pieces could've been taken while they were still alive and used to make it, maiming them in the process. Maybe that's even how Lapis got cracked in the first place, seeing as it's was famously used for making blue pigments.
>>237468
Possible, though Homeworld might also have a method of creating magic ink other than maiming sentient gems. They have the shooting star, the training drone, and that power system from the kindergarten's control room, plus spaceships, so Lapis's situation could be a mostly makeshift thing or just taking advantage of the fact that she had so much life experience to draw from as an adviser. She's still called an informant right now, so maybe it was always her role and whoever put her in the mirror simply saw her only in terms of her job's function.
>>237712
It is a joke.
They are not on vacation. They are animating new episodes and have no backlog from doing full week drops
>>237712
The only good things to come out of this:
1. The Crewniverse get more time to make the upcoming episodes even better.
2. Dat Connie!

Garnet × DMX: http://geneslamm.tumblr.com/post/126568039102/
The Cartoon Network website leaked more episode title; a lot more this time.
Like with the first season, just knowing these titles seems like a slight spoiler, though we don't have descriptions this time.
>Beta (Part 1)
>Earthlings (Part 2)
>Back 2 the Moon (Part 3)
>Tiger Philanthropist
Yeah, we're in for some shit.
>>237878
>Last One Out of Beach City
I get the feeling that some serious shit’s gon’ go down in that episode.
>>237017
This time without the people yelling over the good parts (also without the parts before the singing).
//youtube.com/watch?v=_pSurtUXamM
For the hell of it, I decided to look up the meanings of some of the human names.
Steven - Crown
Greg - Watchful, Alert
Connie - Constant, Steadfast
Sadie - Lady, Princess, Noblewoman
Lars - Laurel (Pride, Hubris)
Ronaldo - Advice, Counsel, Ruler
Bill - Desire for protection
Dewy - Beloved
Kevin - Handsome
And some others that don't seem as significant:
Jenny - God (Yahweh) is gratious.
Barbara - Foreign
Marty - Mars, god of war (Male?)
Jamie - May God protect.
Buck - Male deer
Kofi - born on Friday
>>238089
>Connie - Constant, Steadfast
People have also noticed her name is nearly a homophone for "Kahanni", an Indian name that means "story".
>>238089
Barbara has pale skin and poofy light yellow hair that might indicate a relation (though not necessarily a close one) to the vaguely foreign lineage of Onion and Yellowtail.
Marty is cutthroat in his dealings, possibly warlike in a "I try to apply Sun Tzu to business" kind of way.
Buck's wants to escape expectations that come with being the mayor's son, and as we saw in Shirt Club makes art that can bring him into conflict. Male deer are associated with running free and locking horns. Speaking of his art, I think he might have met Sour Cream through his mom, since she's not only an artist as well but seems to share his sensibilities.
Jenny and Jamie: Their names are related, and Jenny is tired of her career while Jamie is trying change his. Maybe she'll join him as an actress?
Kofi: Friday is itself named after Frige, who is associated with Frigg and Freyja. Not sure if that means anything.
Also, from Online Etymology Dictionary:
onion (n.)
early 12c., from Anglo-French union, Old French oignon "onion" (formerly also oingnon), and directly from Latin unionem (nominative unio), colloquial rustic Roman for "a kind of onion," also "pearl" (via notion of a string of onions), literally "one, unity;" sense connection is the successive layers of an onion, in contrast with garlic or cloves.
While we're on the subject of names, Maheswaran means 'lord of the universe' in Hindi.
>>238093
>>238144
Not the most knowledgeable about Indian matters, but how unusual is it for the first name to be in one language and the last name in another? Telugu is a Dravidian language but Sanskrit is Indoeuropean, and from what i hear language disputes have become a thing with the rise of the Hindutva movement.
>>238147
Keep in mind that Connie is also American, and mixed language/cultural names are extremely common in America. Which is why you get situations like "Joseph Running Bull" or "George Takahashi."
>>238089
>Steven: "Crown"
> "Spoken like a true king."
> Pearl kneeling before Rose, taking off her hat upon seeing her flag
God-Gemperor Steven confirmed
>>238147
I just figured Connie was a nickname like Konnie Huq's.

What a cute, horrifying, fun episode!
>>238343
I wonder if the gem clusters are drawn to other gems like corrupted gems are. It would explain why those ones wandered somewhere close to Beach City and only started attacking when Steven showed up.
There was another new ending theme for "Nightmare Hospital", and someone noticed something:
http://oathkeeper-of-tarth.tumblr.com/post/128836970574/if-i-could-begin-to-be-half-of-what-you-think-of
So it seems the second season (or at least the first half) has a single, long ending theme that's broken apart and is being played piece by piece.
Also, what was up with that pine tree painting in the hall? Gravity Falls reference maybe?
>>238359
Firewatch
>>238364
I just noticed the DBZ reference in that screenshot, too. Didn't notice it when watching.
>>238364
Oh, nice. I'm pretty interested in that game...for all the wrong reasons, but still.
>>238382
A classic movie is one you should have taken the time to watch in your mom's womb, because come on everyone saw it by now. I should actually take advantage of those subscription based services though, especially if I'm allowed to use my brother's account.
What the hell is Peridot up to is she making a zombie gem army, and what did Rose not know when Garnet was freaking out about encountering those things before.
>>238365
Yea that was great.
>>238408
>What the hell is Peridot up to is she making a zombie gem army
It actually seems those were made in the Kindergarten long before Peridot arrived. The point of the experiment seems to be permanently fusing gems to give them the strength of fusions without relying on the components being able to fuse.
The ones we've seen so far are much weaker than any real gem by herself, but there does seem to be a visible progression: some were just scattered limbs, then there was the giant hand. Looking at the two in the hospital, both had torsos, two legs, and multiple arms (which regular fusions often have)--one even has a head, though no face.
>what did Rose not know when Garnet was freaking out about encountering those things before.
Garnet meant the shards they're made from used to be Crystal Gems she knew.
>>238475
So to wonder with it being stated that Rose couldn't heal corrupted gems, could she possibly have done experiments seeing if she could heal shattered gems?
Speaking of corrupted gems, I wonder if Pearl's character development will lead toward her almost becoming corrupted due to her inferiority complex and obsession with Rose Quartz, until she learns to fully come to grips with it and stand up for herself.
//youtube.com/watch?v=ULQgMntenO8
This makes me want MGR remixes with Steven Universe.
>>238480
Interestingly, the first thing that got me listenign to MGR music was Mistral's theme being used as the thread theme when Peridot showed up. Also, I was just listening to Monsoon's theme a few minutes ago for seemingly unrelated reasons? I consider this coinciding of events 2spooky.
Also, this is a good a time as ever to wonder if it would be impolite to ask Kojima if he'd be interested in directing an episode of Steven Universe while he's between jobs.
Do we know yet what really happened to Rose? I mean, did she die really? Gems are shown to be very hard to kill.
>>238484
She didn't die, she became Steven, literally.
Like Pregnancy hit full term and she glowed out like she was changing forms and became baby Steven, at least that's the barest bones we know about it, the whole point of the show is we learn more as Steven does so while we know very little about the event that's the bare bones Steven was told. He is essentially his own mother whose existence came to end when he was born. The gems are just as confused, Pearl said she often wonders if Rose is still alive in some capacity within Steven.
>>238481
Knowing him we'd probably get some weird live action footage montage in the mix.
Steven.
You have a dad who's a proffesional musician. He offers lessons. At least invite him to listen to Sadie singing.
Steven Universe: truly, truly, truly outrageous.
What a cute little episode that 4chan is so incredibly blowing out of proportion.
>>238715
Well, it is the Internet Hate Machine. I'd expect nothing less from it.
Nice episode, although I'm disappointed they couldn't get Sinbad back as Mr. Smiley--I actually think that's the first time this show has changed a voice actor.
Took me a second to recognize that singer, he he he.
>Ronaldo chalkboard has a drawing of the Homeworld symbol and what looks like an injector
OK, is Ronaldo just stupid lucky or some kind of idiot savant?
>>238724
I don't think its made but that he's seen the Diamond Authority symbol and knows somehow of the Injectors and thinks its connected to the screaming green thing that appeared on Television.
>people are bothered or weirded out by Steven's crossdressing
Huh, normally I'm the first one to notice such stuff but it didn't even cross my mind at the time. I just thought it was very sweet of him. And besides he's still just a kid so it stood out even less.
>people are bothered or weirded out by Steven's crossdressing
The dumbest thing.
It's just fucking cloth. Why does anyone get upset over it? I don't think I'll ever understand it.
The weirdest thing is a lot of it is from Tumblr, when I would've expected them to think the opposite. Some of it being the usual closeminded nonsense, others that it seemed really random and wtf, others that they didn't expound on it or treat it with respect enough or whatever. For me it was a complete nonissue.
>>238730
Odd, the people on Tumblr I follow seem to be completely over the moon about how happy they were that it was treated as so normal for Steven to be doing that.
I saw one person who didn't like it because they thought the midriff was too revealing but Steven's been in his tighty whiteys before and it's not like he was sexualized while he was doing it.
Anyone else get the impression that Greg paid for Steven's new smartphone by ghostwriting for pop idols? The end of the song has quite a Mr. Universe bent to it.
>>238732
>Steven's been in his tighty whiteys before
He's been out of his tighty whiteys before.
>>238736
Eh. Not to get meta with this, but you can tell most if not all the music has the same writers.
>>238742
Well, yeah, but Greg's the one with the space fixation.
I guess we're doing a mother archetype thing.
Priyanka - Overbearing
Barbera - Over supportive
Vidalia - Hands off parenting
Nanefua - ??? If she's even involved at all.
Rose - (over)Loving?
Just a thought.
>>238750
That'd help explain why they appeared so infrequently in season 1: They had specific plot-related reasons to appear, and those plots weren't reached yet.
So it looks like Yellow Diamond appears next week, in a 30 minute special.
>>238771
What gave you that idea? Every listing I can find says it's one regular episode for both of the next two weeks.
Granted, the description for the next one is so vague and innocuous ("Steven reveals his bedroom."; the title "Catch and Release" also sounds like something to do with Malachite) that's it's almost definitely going to be important.
>>238772
If it is his bedroom I wonder who he'd reveal his mom's room to other than Connie, since his loft bedroom isn't really anything I'd expect an episode to be about. But the discription linked from Wikipedia says "A look inside Steven's bathroom.", which is in fact a little mysterious as we haven't seen where that is yet. Maybe he'll have something unexpected like an incendiary toilet that runs off the furnace in Garnet's room.
>>238772
http://gummishiptardis.tumblr.com/post/129271702839
Steven Universe would be perfect for a side-scrolling 4-player co-op arcade beat-em-up game. You've got a wide assortment of characters that have different fighting styles, interesting locations to fight at, wide variety of enemies, and the players could perform combo moves or even do a temporary gem fusion when their super meter fills up.
>>238790
Make it a hybrid platformer and you'd still it like crazy.
Of course I've aged with the idea since the first episodes opening when they were all running in the theme song.
I love the idea of a Steven Mirror Universe, where the Homeworld Gems are sent to conquer Earth and fail miserably everytime.
Jasper would take the role of Garnet, but with RAEG instead of self-control. Peridot would be a dorkier Amethyst. And Lapis would not care about conquering or anything like that, instead she'll just chill at the beach with Steven and Greg.
Oh my god, peridot is even a bigger dork than we thought.
>Lauren Zuke: Tonight, 5:30pm, a very obtuse and acute episode of Steven Universe.
I love that they have to make episode description's increasingly, meaningless vague, otherwise they'd spoil the whole thing. Did anyone else not notice the "ominous triangle" until Steven pointed it out?
I wonder if the Cluster is just going to kill everything, or shatter every gem it finds and force them to be part of it.
>>238771
>When It Rains: Steven helps a friend who is afraid of thunderstorms.
Not technically a two-parter, but it seems they're two episodes leading into each other regardless.
>>238863
She came pretty close to outright saying it was a Peridot-centric episode with that description though.
>>238864
I meant the official episode descriptions on TV Guide and such. That was just something Zuke posted on Twitter a few hours ago.
>Peridot is a short gem like Ruby and Sapphire, who fuse to become Garnet
>Ruby is red, Peridot is Green, Sapphire is blue: RGB is the standard color combination for computer monitors
>gems are computery holograms, and Peridot can produce a monitor when she has her limb fingers
>Garnet and Peridot both have big geometrically shaped hair
I dub this theoretical fusion RGBigHair.
This may have been my favorite episode ever and it has me so excited for the future. I hope she's the "friend" mentioned in the description of When It Rains, too.
>>238866
I'm curious what her real weapon is, since her fingers are just part of her super suit.
>>238870
Obviously her hands are lethal weapons. Did you see how she brutalized Steven with those slaps?
>>238874
Or just no one teaches her anything. She has consistently been implied to be incredibly naive about pretty much everything not related to her mission. She didn't even know slapping could hurt people, and she has always looked surprised at how her weapons and things worked if you freeze frame on them after she fires her blaster or what not.
>>238870
Yeah. I guess that means combining with Amy wouldn't mean Bulbasaur vine whip fingers.
>>238874
Like this one? >>237279
I'm excited to see how well Greg handles this.
>Greg: The woman who took my son into space, and you with him, is living in your bathroom?
>Pearl: Well, yes. Once she lost her foot it was only a matter time until we caught her
>Greg: Why would you do that?
>Pearl: Well, once she lost her foot it was only a matter time until we caught her.
>Greg:: Lost her foot?
>Garnet: Part of some suit, Steven took it when she was escaping that ship where she tried to kill us.
>Greg: TRIED TO KILL YOU? I asked why you let in the bathroom, not why I should have a heart attack!
>Pearl: We needed her for information.
>Amethyst: It was Steven's idea.
>>238877
Tiny evil, you can either poof her or stuff her in a vent trunk.
Hmm, I wonder if pebble was a simple derogatory remark or a racial slur?
Like was it just an insult or is there a subset of Gems who are pebbles?
Are most plebeian gems pebbles?
Also being bubbled apparently stops a gem from functioning completely and upon it's popping auto reactivates the trapped gem.
>>238876
>Like this one?
Yes, but not this one.
>>238879
I suspect it's either an insult directed at young people, since Steven's (I presume) even younger than Peridot, or a less insulting remark than clod since she's less anooyed at him than the others.
>>238885
Now that I think of it maybe she's using clod in a more literal sense, as in dirt with low mineral value (thus garbage) as opposed to idiocy in general.
>>238886
Exactly, a pebble is a step up by being an actual rock.
>>238886
She complain that they "smashed [her] into a limbless clod", which only makes sense if that means worthless rather than stupid.
//youtube.com/watch?v=GsEwcwvmBUg
//youtube.com/watch?v=uzPmI_B4uW0
So yes, it's a followup.
I'm gonna miss her fingers though, those were super cool.
Gemsona refers specifically to creating a gem version of yourself not to creating original, do not steal, characters who are gems. Is that correct?
>>238903
From what I've seen, people use it for any OC gem, not just self-inserts. Which sort of defeats the purpose of the "-sona" part in my mind, but whatever.
I kinda wonder what the Homeworld Gems have been up to in the rest of the universe.
I mean they are an immortal expansionist race with access to seemingly easy space travel that like to drain worlds to make further armies of themselves for seemingly the sake of nothing but increasing their numbers further.
In the jillion years since Rosie rebelled on Earth and the Crystal Gem forces were reduced to three Gems their homeworld peers must have conquered/destroyed countless worlds and in the process increased their numbers by a massive degree.
Unless its revealed a new element of the plot is keeping them in check and preventing them from consuming new worlds then its kind of distractingly ridiculous that the crystal gems and Earth even matter compared to the sheer scale of the devastation going on galacticly and the number of gems the homeworld population comprises.
>>238905
I think fangem sounds like what I would call one if I was making fanart/fanfiction.
>>238911
Well they still have an interest in developing things like The Cluster, so I'm thinking they still have plenty of enemies. Either some other alien race, corrupted gems, or a war between gem fections. Given the stance of letting an insane mass of gem fragments consume an entire planet, I think they might be using quite a few counterproductive methods.
>>238911
This is what I think of when I hear about the homeworld gems.
But I hope there is a twist where everthing that has gone wrong with the homeworld is becasue Rose kicked there ass.
Kinda like a certain Prime.
//youtube.com/watch?v=rOz50uRnSTc
>>238920
Recently I've gotten into Transformers IDW comics (mainly More than Meets the Eye series). It amazing how Steven Universe reminds me so much of Transformers....
>>238953
And surprised by her own hands, she's literally designed for war logistics, this whole personhood situation is way out of her league.
http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/video/steven-universe/how-are-gems-made-episode.html
So apparently even Homeworld gems are made by machines.
>>238990
>the Gems were never babies
Oh good, they buried that spinoff idea.
>>238991
>http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/video/steven-universe/how-are-gems-made-episode.html
//youtube.com/watch?v=nqniSO8kxFo
And that also lends further more evidence to the "teenage" gems in the Greg flashback being an illusion.
>>238995
Pfftheheheh...
>>238996
What I thought was more interesting was the part where the Kindergarten Machine drained the life out of the surrounding plants while it produced Gems. >>238911 brought up how the Homeworld Gems must have reproduced tons of themselves in the thousands of years since the Gem Wars with the whole universe to use as raw material, but this short suggests that you need more than a lump of rock to make a Gem. One of the common stumbling blocks in alien invasion sci-fi is explaining why an ultra-powerful alien race would be interested in crummy little planet Earth when it has the whole cosmos to hoover up hydrocarbons and Helium-3 from. The resources we possess are utterly dwarfed by those present on planets right next to us that don't have hostile lifeforms latched onto its surface, so why bother with us?
Unless, obviously, it's the lifeforms themselves the aliens need. It's the one thing we have in abundance that other planets lack: organic life. It appears that Gems need to absorb a surrounding "life force" in order to emerge, and while we can't speak for other solar systems it isn't too anthropocentric to assume that organic life in the sheer quantities present on Earth is freakishly rare in the wider universe. If organic life on the Gem Homeworld is completely tapped out from over-exploitation, that makes us prime estate in the Gems' eyes, an enormously valuable asset.
It does beg the question, though: if all Gems came from machines, THEN WHO WAS MACHINES?!
>>239007
She seems interested in learning more about Earth, I think she's going to take Greg vary seriously as Steven's source of knowledge and ask if he can be her dad because she doesn't know what dads are.
>>239011
She could be a few hundred years old, but that's still probably young as far as gems go.
I imagine most gems go through a short time of training after they emerge but are otherwise treated as adults.
>>239010
>I think she's going to take Greg vary seriously as Steven's source of knowledge and ask if he can be her dad because she doesn't know what dads are.
I hope not, because if she does I might die of the cuteness.

>>239027
Peridot agrees.
//youtube.com/watch?v=toIxsAibZww
Apparently it'll take some work for Hologram Head to get any respect out of her.
>>239028
Will we get more on how the Pearl Gems are supposed to be more like the hologram and not as free thinking as this pearl.
>>239031
I'm not sure why you're asking us since none of us are on the production team, but I certainly hope so.
All those who say Pearl is Worst Gem are FILTHY LIARS.
>>239034
Worst gem but Dewey is onto something so it balances out.
>>239036
Who was Prime Gem, was Rose the Optimus that saw the light and appealed to a council on behalf of earth that their expansion via planet destruction was wrong. Did they not listen which is why she cut earth off and destroyed many of the warps in that corner of space if not all of space.
>>239040
Not if council turns out to be these guys.
See also Functionism.
Pearls are closer to prostitutes or escorts than servants.
Whoa, didn't expect that.
Also here is the episode.

Thanks to Madridista.
>>239154
I think they are servants, just ones used more as hand maids and status symbols than for labor.
>>239154
>prostitutes
What. It was spelled out pretty clearly they were maid types. If you're talking about the part where she said they look good, I didn't get that implication at all.
There's another new ending for this episode, this time with new visuals instead of just music. Right now there's just camrips from the Cartoon Network site, but someone will get a clear upload tomorrow once the episode is on iTunes/Amazon/etc.
>>239161
Yes. But that's not the same thing.
>>239161
That still sounds more like status symbols/maids than either of what you were suggesting.
>>239163
It seems to me they fall somewhere between maids and courtiers.
Man that was such a depressing ending to this episode, what with Steven being brutally slaughtered by the Cluster
So there is some kind of caste system. Except they're made instead of born into it. Not that it makes much difference for the gems themselves.
>>239253
Also, this puts Pearl's lust for Rose into an interesting light. If she was a queen/diamond and Pearl was her Pearl, it would explain a lot of the attraction, and why Rose never seemed to meet it at the same level. To Rose, she would be something more of a beloved companion, and to Pearl, Rose would be the greatest being she ever knew. She would have been literally made for her.
Well, I've just checked my DVR and were in for another hiatus on the 22nd. This time it's for new episodes of UG.
Peridot's brazen to just straight up ignore that she's still technically a prisoner and outright claim to own one of her captors. I don't know how Pearl resisted just pulling out her spear and bubbling Peridot again, they have the information out of her now. And I suspect Garnet of subtly influencing things to orchestrate Peridot getting as frustrated as possible at the end just to make a point of how little authority she has on Earth.
Also, maybe I'm just having confirmatino bias, but I think what we've seen supports the idea that peridots in general are a fairly recent gem invention, and in some ways displace traditional uses of pearls, the way a business might have less need of personal secretaries when it has an IT team to let everyone jut share files on the company network. Pearls hold things, Peridots build cheaper robonoids that hold things.
"Too Far" aired at Comic-Con and someone posted a video of most of it, so be on the lookout for spoilers.
>>239318
For those who wanna see it.
//youtube.com/watch?v=rR47qEinfms
All the peridot and Amythyst shipping blew up
Be forewarned, a middle section is missing.
Peridots: Distinctly engineered to talk shit. I wonder how low her expectations for non-hybrid humans will be. Something tells me her outlook won't work for her as well as it does for Edge.
>>239415
I get that, but even then it's still bold to lay claim on an enemy's property while held by them. How did she know Garnet or Amethyst wouldn't go "LOL she's mine but I didn't tell her, now hands off my slave."?
This ep was basically Stupid Sexy Amethyst.mp4. And good on presenting how to not be a closeminded chode without getting obnoxiously preachy about it. Same with the last episode.
Damn show keeps turning me super gay.
That ending tape recording bit was like something out of an anime
>>239439
My guess is she'd give up ownership if confronted about it. With how needy Pearl is, it might be that a pearl without an owner will immediately look for a new one.
>>239453
She was a nerd on the clock, focused on getting her job done. We're now seeing off the clock Peridot.
So when will Peridot Fuse with Amethyst? Going to be when Jasper comes back. Their Fusion looking something like what Peri alludes to being Amethyst final form.
>>239583
I remember someone on the /co/ threads talking about the concept of Stevonnie getting her first combat outting versus Jasper, I guess partly because how much it would burn Jasper's ass to be beaten by an abomination of a fusion that was only like 25% gem.
Personally I'd just love to see Stevonnie going full Sword n' Board against something at some point.
Stevonnie going full power causes their hair to go pink like Roses.
>>239583
I wasn't actually sure if that would happen any time soon. It might not be, but I now think it might be an emergency fusion to save Steven from some threat, the first time they do it anyway.
Speaking of Peridot's take on Amethyst, all Quartzes usually being that big and buff sort of implies a downgrade for Rose compared to fanon, since it means she could be on par with Jasper without secretly being a Diamond, just because she could be a bigshot general without that title. Plus, Amethyst's type being more comparable to Rose than I thought makes me wonder about her vine whip in relation to Rose's control of plants, and how Amethyst of the three other CG often acts the most like Steven. Really about as interesting of a nature/engieering versus nuture situation as Pearl.
>>239585
To better play up the threat posed by Yellow Diamond, I think it makes sense to have their first enocounter with her be a defeat, and in turn it makes sense to have Stevonie win a battle before that to show that it's not just from inexperience with fighting in that form.

I'm surprised CN's website only has two of the shorts up, but maybe they just want to save those for the DVD?

Production-wise, these shorts together seemed to count as one episode: the episode numbers on the model sheets skip 58.

This is from the last New York Comic-Con. There's a full-sized version, but it's too big to post directly on this board.

It seems like a tiring walk to get from Steven's house to anywhere else.
>>239799
Don't lay that on all of us. It's more a case of "fuck tumblr".
>>239799
Blame Tumblr social justice culture in general. SU fanbase isn't even unique about this. The incident happened over the artist drawing Amethyst too thin and therefore being guilty of fat-shaming, but this kind of shit happens alllll the time. Either the characters aren't drawn dark enough, trans enough, fat enough, or whatever, even if the art is actually more authentic to the original work than the harassers' headcanons.
>>239799
OK so nowadays the phrase has been appropriated by the ne'erdowells, yeah, but I think this is a case where you can call the people responsible for this an actual honest-to-god classic case of capital-letter Social Justice Warriors at work.
>>239813
The artist's username is Zamii070. Luckily, she's alive and hopefully recovering.
>>239811
I keep seeing people talking about the official crew sexualizing the kids by not speaking out against the fanart, but I'm guessing that's unrelated.

>>239811
I'm sure you wouldn't mind taking the hit for this since you seem to be pretty indignant on the issue.
I blame online anonymity. No consequences to actions, no deterrent against people who have their identity online... Its anonymity.
Yeah. That falls on us, too. But thats the real culprit. Since I'm sure you actually mean it when you're mad about this. You're not just trying to prove a point.
>>239827
Like, advocating for social justice, in principle? That's great. But the particular kind of social justice that goes on in Tumblr? I know, I know, #notalltumblrs, but that site is particularly bad about being more concerned with looking progressive than being progressive, or so zealous that it's basically if you don't agree with me you don't deserve to live.
>>239929
I'll just say this.
Tumblr is like the only website I ever go on anymore and I agree its a definitely shit site with a very much shit community and social structure.
Also, it might just be me, so scratch this off as 'anecdotal' if you want, but I've seen way more people be sexist and anti-sj whatever on the site than the opposite. For shits and giggles, maybe. I know people on there mainly for /co/ stuff. But still.
Supposedly now I'm hearing the artist in question faked the death threats and harassment and is lying about it for attention. This is sounding really fucking familiar.
>>239937
Christ.
...This seems like more of a moral argument than one pertaining to the show. Could we be on-topic? Even if there isn't a show to discuss right now?
Matt Burnett had some interesting things to say on twitter. The next portion of the series seems to be some of his favorite stuff and he's kind of pissed the network keeps screwing with their schedule.
And apparently there's more to Jasper than meets the eye and they'll get into some of that later.
>>239938
>Could we be on-topic? Even if there isn't a show to discuss right now?
Alright, well Connie's voice actor shared some stuff that she say could be considered spoiler, but is so vague that I don't think anyone would object to hearing.

People actually still do this in the year of two thousand plus fifteen?
>>239937
For now, I'm more inclined to believe the artist, if only because her detractors just rub me the wrong way.
>>239942
Trying to parse Ruby and Sapphire as anything else other than a romantic relationship after their Keystone makeout. Damn adorable Tiny Couple.
>>239963
I'd argue whether or not the artist was being truthful goes beyond the point of contention now. There is harassment over this sort of thing still floating around. Everyone wants to be the hero to the point that some do anything to make villains out of whatever targets they can find. Providers of cruelty in guise of justice. Human nature and all that jazz.
>my reaction at the supposedly problematic fanart that started it all
http://www.dailydot.com/geek/steven-universe-fanartist-bullied-controversy/
Good summary of everything that went down. Apparently even the SU crew got into it, and got their share of hate. Some of the haters' reactions make me want to throw up, as someone who is strongly for liberal causes. And that black-and-white mob mentality ruled purely by ethos without logos is a big reason why I hate Tumblr's social "justice" community.
There's probably a more general word to describe this kind of "combing through everything from a person you already dislike to find a spurious reason to convict them of wrongdoing" activity that I wish I could come up with, but it's literally what the Red Guards culture police did during my father's childhood in Communist China to stamp out dissent or imprison and execute people they didn't like for personal reasons.
>>240043
Reminds me of the days of the "Hate Machine" Cept with Tumblr they are a lot more self righteous about their anger and working to destroy a persons life and that seems to be the only thing that gives them cause. Because even when the HM was in full swing there was also a Parallel. Like the Old Man and his thought to be Lonely Birthday. Tumblr its just all rage all the time.
>>240043
I'm not 100% familiar with Steven Universe, but supposedly that piece of fanart with Rose having a skinny arm was from before Rose was actually shown in canon and she was basing how she looked off of depictions of Rose that hinted at her at the time?
Yeah, this whole thing is absurd and any cross-eyed little nitwit perpetrator who ends up getting reported to the cops or getting in trouble with their parents is gonna be a schadenfreude and karma cake for me.
>>240046

>>240046
The difference between them and regular anonymous haters is the latter is usually motivated by malevolence, which will eventually fizzle out when they get bored, lose access to the Internet, or the target stops giving them attention.
Whereas these kinds of self righteousness-motivated assholes have a strong ideological cause to rally behind so they won't give up until their target has burned to the ground and then some. It's not a problem exclusive to people with progressive politics, but the kinds of beliefs that /pol/tards and their ilk hold tend to make them more similar to the first camp.

This sort of statement is what we're talking about when we say "self-righteous."

The other rumor I'm hearing (no idea if this is true so I might just be guilty of gossipmongering) is that it started because the person who started this's ex was dating the artist so it was a personal grudge. Which doesn't explain all the assholes who don't know either person and jumped on the bandwagon anyway.

>>240099
Its the bandwagon, some jump on because they are troll and think its their bullshit "duty" to fan the flames regardless and then you've got the idiot new kids that jump in because they think its how things are done and want to be accepted. Its pretty much how /co/ goes now.
>>240074
>>240150
So when Jasper or another Gem his planet sit will Amy and Peri fusion on that basis? And will then because they are both fusions of love we get a four way fusion with Garnet to combined into some Super Being that just trounces whatever the Homeworld throws at them with almost no effort.
But then it becomes next to impossible for Peri to fuse again afterwards since that kinda love is utterly alien to her and she feels unworthy of it or similar.
>>240150
Most of the people defending this behavior don't know the artist at the root of this, and seem to be sincere in their belief for this cause compared to those shitters who are just a bunch of REEEEEEEEEEEE assholes afraid of different people. Which might actually make it worse in a way, since these folks feel like they're earnestly doing the right thing so they won't back down for anything.
Besides, this is far from the first time it's happened, it's just the one that got the most coverage from the media because SU is popular and the attempted suicide bit. This shit is actually the norm for a large chunk of Tumblr. I've seen it happen. All. The. Fucking. Time. A lot of my favorite fic writers get bullied and told they're rape apologists or promoting heteronormativity or encouraging child abuse by complete strangers for shipping something they don't like, or using plot elements they don't like, or tropes they don't like. Never mind some of them ARE gay or have been in abusive relationships themselves. Or artists harassed because their depictions weren't arbitrarily black enough or fat enough, or because their humanizations didn't tick off enough representation boxes. Some of them even quit the fandom altogether, though thankfully none of them tried to kill themselves.
And of course when it gets point out these characters weren't supposed to be black, fat, or whatever in the canon either the self-appointed fandom cops get butthurt and find whatever excuse to claim that they, some random fan on the Internet, has more say in what is correct than the people responsible for even creating the work they enjoy in the first place. You want to depict the character progressively? Fine, it's your right. If people get mad at you for it you can just ignore them. But know that just as much it's not your place to boss other people around and tell them to kill themselves either, and just because you're from a group that's historically more oppressed doesn't make it suddenly OK to be a complete raging asshole.
The best I can hope for is that this event teaches people on Tumblr to draw some boundaries, but I doubt that's going to happen. I'm already seeing douchebags more concerned by the fact that bigots will use this as ammo against "the SJWs" (yeah that sucks but it's already happened, has happened, will happen no matter what) than the fact that a girl just tried to kill herself or that this never should've fucking happened in the first place.
These attitudes remind me of the whole Joss Whedon Twitter debacle, which granted I can tell you for a fact is more motivated by people butthurt their ships and headcanons didn't come true in the exact way they wanted than actual concern about feminism, but still. It wasn't the real reason he left, but instead of acknowledging after all the bad press that maybe they were acting like a bunch of childish assholes and could've phrased things better, they tried to make excuses, pat each other on the back, and spin it off as the Evil Straight Cis White Gentile Man trying to make them look bad, even though their own actions stand for themselves. Shit like "Joss Whedon is a racist fascist homophobic misogynist and I hope he kills himself" somehow not counting as harassment because at least it wasn't phrased as "Joss Whedon you are a racist fascist homophobic misogynist and I hope you kill yourself". Fuck. Off.

>>240995
>She can live practically anywhere, the place that's gonna explode is the last one she'd want to get to.
It's also the only place she could likely find a team of gems willing to resist the Homeworld with her.
That plus the other gems seeing such a motive as more ulterior than noble would make for some interesting conflict, both internal and external.

Looks like we'll be seeing how Gems deal with the "same gem type = same name" problem soon.
Speaking of which, silly idea:
>Peridot goes ahead and actually buys herself a new Pearl while she's at Homeworld.
>To tell her apart from the Crystal Gem's Pearl, she gets called Peridot's Pearl.
>Steven quickly changes this to Perhiperal, which neatly describes her clingy behavior.
My guess is "war machine" fusion is fusion between gems of the same type.

Also cross caste fusion is apparently utterly unheard of until Garnet; immediately being reviled and yes, "war machine" fusion is when gems of the same type fuse. it changes nothing in their appearance other than size and strength with no mental changes other than a unified will.

>>241164
Given they seem to have trouble with looking at each other out of caste, I really don't think it's too heavy handed.
>>241172
Guess that is where her crisis is coming from "No Rose didn't know, she wouldn't do that." And also its not based off a emotional connection theirs being the strongest with love as the center. They are just forced together after being destroyed.
I really hope Rose wouldn't do that.
So people have been guessing Steven's age forever and it turns out everyone is right AND wrong!
>>241185
I think that's a better way of thinking of it than the idea that they're still two separate entities inhabiting a single body. Garnet is clearly a different entity than either Sapphire or Ruby, even though they're parts of her. It's more like she's their daughter, and they continue to exist as shoulder angels / shoulder devils sharing insights from their lives with her. It also makes Steven parallel a fusion in that Rose still exists in him, in a sense, even though she gave up her physical form and Greg didn't.

The Answer was really interesting, seeing new universe lore displayed like that and actually seeing multiple of the same type of gem.
If Connie's mom were there, I'm sure she'd could have pointed out how normal it is for boys to have a late growth spurt.
Little baby Steven, your Peanuts style eyes are almost cute enough to make up for how difficult you are.
>>241165
It could be she's also cycloptic like Sapphire, but that seems odd if it doesn['t come with future vision powers. Maybe cyclops gems don't always have an eye power, or at least not always the same one? Based on what we've seen of Lapis and Sapphire, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the eye covering thing is just an effect of Blues having a tendency to put on airs of being artsy, solemn, and stoic.
>>241183
More of a bird call sounding squeak that I think was meant to accentuate how speechless she felt.

>If Connie's mom were there, I'm sure she'd could have pointed out how normal it is for boys to have a late growth spurt.
It's not normal for them to look completely identical for six years.
>>241203
Fortunately, the fact that it *isn't* airing this week means it mostly just tells us that Peridot isn't about to lose her admiration for anyone of high power and status.
Those are some major differences. No way do they stretch back only ~6000 years.
Either that or the colony was in progress way way more than we suspected.
I think it's also reasonable to call the rose = pink diamond theory debunked with the background we saw.
Aside from that, white diamond appears to have been the primary target in the strawberry fields from Serious Steven.
>>241210
>I think it's also reasonable to call the rose = pink diamond theory debunked with the background we saw.
Nope, see, we saw three Diamond murals, Blue, White and Yellow; Excluded was Pink and thus if anything, strengthening the theory.
>>241209
I SURE DID!
So, every gem structure overlaps with an existing "event" where either urban legends or an actual event in our world took place.
For instance Area 51 is clearly marked on that map; Also dead center in the destruction of Russia is where the Tunguska event took place.
My guess is in this universe instead of a meteor it was a Gem ship and instead of being taken down in the upper atmosphere, it hit.
//youtube.com/watch?v=EiXpp-i442s
>>241209
So, bermuda triangle, Area 51, the Tunguska event and the Varginha UFO incident are the only ones I know by heart.
>>241210
>I think it's also reasonable to call the rose = pink diamond theory debunked with the background we saw.
Aside from those legs not looking like Rose's, I think Steven would've taken a lot more notice if there was a huge portrait of his mother alongside legendary matriarchs.
Also speaking of this scene, I'm surprised Lion was letting Peridot dip into his Manespace even if she didn't try to see what's in there like Pearl was.
Also I think I can explain Africa in South America too, in Dead Space it is explained the easiest way to circumnavigate the logistical nightmares of interstellar mining is to "pop the cork" via removing an entire section of a planet's mantel which can be effortlessly mined in the gravity free environment of space, this also allows surface miners greatly increased access to normally unreachable depths with CENTURIES being shaved off the process.
Africa is one of the single most mineral rich places on the planet earth, it makes sense that is where they'd start.
So what I think is Homeworld "popped the cork" on Africa, (possibly) Rose stopped them but in the coarse of the battle the earth continued to rotate below and when it fell the "cork" landed on South America.
>>241214
It's possible it was just too dark to see clearly.
I don't think Rose was Pink Diamond, I think she was her Guard who gave her the old Jaime Lannister special.
>>241211
Humans need to develop Gundams to defend themselves against the crystal-spacenoids attacking their birthplace.
Steven Universe seems like it'd fit really well as the setting for an Adance Wars style game, with color coded factions and warriors who conventiently regenrate most of the time to be the cannon fodder. Even fusions would fit into it pretty well as dual strike abilities.
>>241210
>Those are some major differences. No way do they stretch back only ~6000 years.
Apparently not.

>Aside from those legs not looking like Rose's,
That broken statue isn't of Rose, but the other three can't be the diamonds either--Blue and Yellow Diamond both have gems in their chest, but only one of the three remaining statues does. More likely, each one is just suppose to represent a diamond's subjects.
>I think Steven would've taken a lot more notice if there was a huge portrait of his mother alongside legendary matriarchs.
He didn't notice the first one.
>I'm surprised Lion was letting Peridot dip into his Manespace even if she didn't try to see what's in there like Pearl was.
That looks like Steven is in the portal, but Peridot is just in the regular main (because she's that small).
>>241214
>>241217
Too much points her at least being associated (the red triangle in her flag, the shattered red diamond in the sky arena, the absence of red triangles in the newer homeworld ships, the conspicuous failure to show her in the last episode, lion's teleport looking like a literal pink diamond). The most telling one I've seen recently is the parallel between the original Diamond Authority symbol and gem placement: white is on top, and her gem is in her forehead, Blue and Yellow are below her and both have gems on their chest, and Pink is on the bottom...meaning her gem would be on her abdomen. Where Rose's is.
My theory Rose is Pink Diamond, shape-shifted to be rounder, softer, and smaller. Gems seem to have a set size limit; Amethyst can't be as big as Purple Puma, or Steven as tall as he was, for extended periods. But being shrunk would, I'd think, require less energy than projecting a full-size body, and be doable for extended periods (especially if some of Rose/PD's power is somehow redirected into Lion).
The only gap is no one remarking on Rose being a former Diamond. I'm wondering if the other Diamonds used some sort of mind wipe to keep the rest of the Gems from remembering her, or if none of the CG's ever met her prior to her shapeshift into Rose, and were perhaps even told by her that she was PD's general who went rogue.
>>241220
The four murals arne't broken or statues, and there's only four, one for each corner of the big square in the middle of the room. Blue seems fairly accurate, and Yellow seems to match the extended intro shot.
However, they do have a fairly abstract quality to them, and gems can change their default form when they regenerate. I can buy the idea that Rose could simply have changed, both in her appearance and demeanor as well as what she represents, such that an old art deco representation of her doesn't immediately remind people of what she looks like now.
Maybe she even deliberatley disguised her status before defecting because she thought it would demoralize the other gems too much to see a diamond betray them, or didn't want to look like she was trying to get even more power by making an empire all to herself when she actually wanted less power over her subjects.
>>241222
Alternatively she intentionally downgraded herself to a Quartz in solidarity with Earth, since quartz gems are apparently Earth's specialty.
>>241222
>The four murals arne't broken or statues, and there's only four, one for each corner of the big square in the middle of the room.
I thought you were talking about those statues in the Sky Arena.
>>241229
That's the exact same background shot as the one in the spoilered image I posted to point out what scence I was talking about, so obviously yes.
Anyway, the reason I think Peridot was dipping into Lion's pocket dimension or whatever is is rather than just sitting in his mane is that she has the same white glowy around her that Steven does.
That wasn't quite the resolution I was expecting: Instead of really coming down on either side, Peridot tried to please everyone, but accidentally pissed off the less forgiving half and leaving the other as her only option.
Bridge = burned
Interesting theory I heard today, the diamond authority logo signifies the bodily location of a diamond and their affiliates, blue and yellow = chest, white = forehead and pink is belly.
Now the most interesting thing about this theory, is that it would mean "our" Pearl, is white diamond's pearl, which could tie in with Rebecca's saying "even now of all the Gems, Steven knows the least about Pearl."
Also today's episode.

HUGE! She was amazing. And that fucking Pearl.
>>241234
But why then would she have Pink Diamond's symbol on her space suit? Perhaps:
- PD/RQ lost her pearl, and White Diamond gave her hers as a replacement
- White Diamond rejected and maybe would have shattered Pearl for being defective, but Rose took her on instead
- Rose (assuming she's a member of Pink's court and not PD herself) killed PD's Pearl when she assassinated her, and adopted White Diamond's Pearl out of guilt
Now that this episode has actually aired, you can watch the beginning of the next without ruining it.

>>241238
I figure she'll probably work with Pearl to build a crude substitute, but not one that fully replicates the original set. I wonder if we'll see her summon a weapon like the other gems do, or at least say why she can't.
>>241239
It's possible there's more pearls than just the ones working for the diamonds, there's probably a lesser aristocracy consisting of the elites Peridot mentioned that usually sit at the control chairs when the diamonds aren't around. Maybe Rose had a Pearl who dies at the hand of White Diamond's pearl, but found it moving how Rose mourned the death of a lowly Pearl like herself and was considered defective for it.
>>241245
>It's possible there's more pearls than just the ones working for the diamonds
There probably are: each diamond seems to just have one Pearl, but Peridot said there were hundreds of them.
>>241246
The way she talked about Pearl make it sound as if they are pretty much unthinking drones. Maybe imprinted by the will of their owner.
>>241250
I don't know. Blue Diamond's pearl looked pretty melancholy for someone with no thoughts of her own. Maybe that was just supposed to be how Steven imagined her, rather than what she really looks like, but it struck me as something that might become important later. At the time I thought it might be foreshadowing the Pearls being generally unhappy and Pearl leading a rebellion of the other Pearls once they attack Homeworld (as I suspect they'll have to at some point to defeat the Diamonds), but Yellow Diamond's pearl seemed perfectly content and even thrilled at what she was doing, so maybe I jumped to conclusions on that one.
>>241251
>Pearl leading a rebellion of the other Pearls once they attack Homeworld (as I suspect they'll have to at some point to defeat the Diamonds
Why would they need a Receptionist Uprising when they'll have the repaired feral gem shards in the bubble room brought by to life by Steven regaining his heal slots?
>>241236
I saved this image because I really liked the Peridot design in the corner, the drill in particular looks really cool and its kind of fitting since the drill she and the CG's are working on together has been such a factor.
Speaking of Peridot's limb enhancers, does anyone have the fanart of Connie using them? She's pointing the arm cannon with one hand and swinging sword with the other.
For some reason I've not been able to come across it again, kicking myself over not saving it the first time.
>>241250
Yeah, that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of them though.
>>241251
>Blue Diamond's pearl looked pretty melancholy for someone with no thoughts of her own.
Blue Diamond seems pretty melancholic herself, so I Ifigured she just made a point of getting matching minions. While Yellow Diamond is just so awful that her Pearl is glad when it's someone else getting chewed out for a change.
>>241255
Well the gem shards, as oppossed to the corrupted gems, will probably need matching bits from the cluster once that's destroyed, but they'll probably handle that well before invading homeworld.
