Found this pretty through review of Ken's Knuckles' Omnibus and thought it was interesting enough to post here. I Bought Penders' Book Again... TLDW: A bit pricey, some odd art changes(one of the comics is entirely redrawn to be in a style similar to IDW's classic Sonic stuff and it doesn't look bad) but mostly a good reprint.
I'm hoping to update the deviantart comics after tomorrow's storytime. It could be worse though, I haven't updated any comics on /lgbt/'s webcomics general since the hack. Just be thankful that I'm not posting pic related here instead! I could explain the context of pic related, but it's funnier if I don't >>20955 >didn't link the /coq/ thread Rude! >>20965 Is is bad that I still kinda want to purchase it? >>20966 It's a cool twist not having them both be roboticized, really raises the stakes >>20967 >ignoring (AI) Sally to play with Knuckles He's still in there somewhere!
>>20975 Yeah, makes sense. Pretty much all modern tech in Sonic's world is derived from Gerald's work, from extreme gear, to GUN and Eggman's robots, chaos drives, and hover tech. Now that I think about it, the only innovation of Eggman's is using creatures to power his robots. With his creation of an artificial Chaos Emerald, Tails is the only person to genuinely improve on Gerald's work
>>20977 Also Eggman, if you count the giant artificial emeralds he made in that boring IDW arc in the city. Maybe that’s a quality vs quantity thing since they were flawed or something and blew up if you used them
>>20978 >implying I even look at any of the non-Rough and Tumble panels lol. lmao even! Seriously though, I don't like that they undermined one of Tails' greatest achievements by just having Eggman be able to do the same thing That said, I genuinely don't remember that issue, it really must've been boring
🚨Breaking Penders news🚨 We're getting a complete recolor of the original miniseries for the upcoming Scott Shaw! collection and while it doesn't look bad, it also doesn't look like classic Archie
>>20981 And the original reprint for comparison >>20980 >Storytime THAT Werehog Comic, you know the one. Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down? Seriously though, it looks familiar but I can't place it. Happy to storytime it though
>>20985 Well the artstyle looked familiar, and at this point I think I've developed an actual a sixth sense for hunting down Sonic fancomics. And since I mentioned Diana Ross last thread 🎶Ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from gettin' to you, literally any Sonknux comic!🎶
>>20988 Oh my! >>20989 They really should've just made the whole show about Sonic and Dread slutting it up >>20991 I mean, have you not been reading the Konductor's comics? Seriously though, I've been (very slowly) working on an alternate ending for preboot Archie that diverges around where Bollers and Penders left and attempts to finish the comic in a way that does the whole "Knuckles' great destiny" thing justice and recontextualizes M25YL into something less terrible.
>>20994 I wonder how Shadow's translates into sex. . . Although I find it a bit funny how the fandom has been making Shadow into more and more of a coffee guy.
>>20993 >I've been (very slowly) working on an alternate ending for preboot Archie At least wait an issue or two before introducing Remington's skimpy new uniform.
>diverges around where Bollers and Penders left That's interesting, most Archie continuations take place at the reboot or where the reboot ended, but you're actually basically replacing Ian's run with one you wrote. That's a really unique idea and I'd be interested to read it.
>does the whole "Knuckles' great destiny" thing justice Does he ass-vore Dr. Ian Droid? But seriously, it IS interesting how "Future Savior Knuckles" is just dropped from the comic once Ian takes over. I guess Ian wanted the future to be in flux or something, but Locke's last words about how he experimented on Knuckles to protect him from "a future terror" is the last we hear of that plotline. I don't exactly blame Ian, but I wonder if he had any plans for it.
>spoiler At first I thought this would be a foolish undertaking, but honestly it probably wouldn't be that hard to make that arc better. Just have literally anything happen.
>>20999 Whisper and Surge are so much better in fancomics than they are in canon. It's like how Yamcha is worthless in DBZ canon but has crazy feats in the filler, like beating Recoome.
>>20995 I shudder to think! >>20996 That sort of 90s airbrushed/watercolored anime art really is fantastic. It's such a shame don't get to see it very often >>20998 Yeah, the art's always great and being able to read just how enthusiastic the people working on those games were was really nice to see. Now companies make sure all responses are hyper-sanitized >>20999 >implying Slutnic wouldn't have neutralized the threat first He's the fastest thing alive! >>21000 Controversial take lmao, pretty much everyone thinks this: Maybe spend time focusing less on new OCs (that will probably spend the entire issue traumadumping or being bland) and either focus on fun action stories with the game characters, or at least introduce some new villains?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Rough and Tumble are the best OCs because they: 1. Aren't portrayed as more competent or powerful than the game characters; 2. Have cool streamlined designs that kids can recognizably draw; 3. Have bombastic personalities that steal every scene they're in; 4. Are always having fun (seriously, this comic is aimed at children, it's supposed to be fun); 5. Have straightforward motivations so we can jump straight into the action without needing to retread their backstory; and most importantly 6. Sex appeal
If I could put on my non-PC hat: With all the focus on drama and tumblr-tier OCs, I get the feeling that they're trying to shift their target audience from young boys to 20-something women, which is a huge mistake. I get that a lot of the draw of Archie was the character drama, but that was built on a solid foundation of action and adventure, meaning that there was something for everyone >>21005 Pic related!
>>21002 >At least wait an issue or two before introducing Remington's skimpy new uniform. lmao, one of the plot points is about the development of Knuckles' sexy leather jumpsuit we see in M25YL It's going to be something designed by Locke and Dimitri to better channel the chaos force >That's interesting, most Archie continuations take place at the reboot or where the reboot ended, but you're actually basically replacing Ian's run with one you wrote. That's a really unique idea and I'd be interested to read it. That's the idea! As much as I like Flynn's run, I though it'd be interesting to see where things could go if all plot points had continued. I was looking around to see if anyone had done anything similar, but it's as you said, everyone has theirs be an alternate ending for the preboot or occasionally takes place in the reboot >Does he ass-vore Dr. Ian Droid? lmao, I am planning on doing something interesting with Robotnik and Robo-Robotnik, and wasn't going to include Droid, but now I'll have to get a reference in somehow! Fun fact: the actor Penders got to play Droid did some lewd photoshoots for Playgirl >it IS interesting how "Future Savior Knuckles" is just dropped from the comic once Ian takes over. The editor was pretty clear that Ian's first major job was to trim down the cast and simplify the plots so my guess is this was one of the first to go. You can tell he's trying to resolve it with the Knuckles-as-Enerjak plot, but it's just not the same. I can't really blame Ian or the Editor here, the book had just wasted a year's worth of B stories on M25YL so there just wasn't an appetite for more Knuckles' destiny stuff >At first I thought this would be a foolish undertaking, but honestly it probably wouldn't be that hard to make that arc better. Just have literally anything happen. Even worse, I plan on leaving the story exactly as it is!Basically, it's Robotnik's final contingency plan. In his final battle with Sonic, he activates the tachyon chamber, which kills him, meaning Knuckles doesn't have his big destiny moment defeating Robotnik and spacetime begins to break down, leading to the events of M25YL. The reason everyone's acting weird in M25YL is that reality's literally melting, and Sonic disappearing at the end actually removes him from the timeline, just before his final fight with Robotnik, meaning that Robotnik wins. It's then 6 months of hell where Robotnik's almost destroyed everything and Knuckles ends up having to save the day, achieving his destiny. There'd be other plots, like Tails bringing Sonic back by infiltrating the tachyon chamber, and Sally fully in charge of the entire planet's combined resistance. Oh, and there'd be a definite happy ending for everyone (well except for Robotnik)
>>21064 >With all the focus on drama and tumblr-tier OCs, I get the feeling that they're trying to shift their target audience from young boys to 20-something women, which is a huge mistake. I get that a lot of the draw of Archie was the character drama, but that was built on a solid foundation of action and adventure, meaning that there was something for everyone I agree but I don't think it's purposeful, probably due to the bias that comes from the media and social media Evan and Ian consume. Not to mention how women-centeic fanfic sites like AO3 have gotten more popular over the years while FF has seen to diminish in size. So even if the fans are still producing the same type of content in the same amounts, the type of drama heavy fanfic women tend to write gets pushed up for more recognition in fanfiction and fandom circles. Of course a majority of fan comics aren't like this, and in Sonic fan comics are bigger/more important than fanfics, but they still have an impact on the fandom and it's perception. All of which feedbacks into media, but in IDW case specifically with Ian and Evan being fandom members and fanfic/fan comic writers. Maybe just IDW in general going by my impression of their TMNT series I read a couple years ago. A sort of unintentional demographic shift, I just wish the other IDW ocs got the opportunity to be as fun as rough and tumble, unfortunately Starline is killed to early on, Kit and Surge are kind of fumbeled, and Whisper is a one-note cry baby who drags down Tangle. Oh yeah and Lanolin has big tits and doesn't have a distinct enough personality besides being a plot covniwnt roadblock.
>>21065 Fair point >>21066 lmao, I actually recognized a lewd artist from their non-lewd Tamers fanart. Weirdly, not even the savants on e621 worked it out. I won't name names though, artists deserve to be anonymous fans too >>21068 Yeah, I think a lot of it has to do with the increasing tendency for people to surround themselves with likeminded people, especially online. I don't think it's something they were aiming for, but they've become a cabal of ascended fans that's increasingly blind to external opinions. Like, I don't think they'd enjoy interacting with me since while I'm a gay Sonic fan, I really don't like the direction they're taking the comic in, particularly their gay characters (camp villain that is unceremoniously killed off despite being one of the must fun OCs, or sexless bland birds trying to act like they're Vector's dads, whatever they're doing with the new ~genderless~ OC that's guaranteed to be bland). At this point, Rough and Tumble are the best gay representation this comic has, and it's all unintentional! At least we've been getting some good Sonknux scenes, but again I think those are slipping under the radar >TMNT From what I hear, most comics at IDW are like this >Kit and Surge are kind of fumbeled I think they're still salvageable, but it'd be difficult at this point. The Konductor's comic handles them way better, but does have the advantage of allowing romance >Lanolin I'd have made her a smug hypercompetent bitch that has her own better team that keeps Whisper and Tangle (and Silver) as underdogs. Pretty much make her (and another OC) the Scanty and Kneesocks to their Panty, Stocking and Briefs
>>21070 >Fandom Yeah that's the problem with this sort of ascended Superman, I think a good fan that comes in to officially work on a thing they like needs to be aware of the fandom outside of their own circle, as well as having a professional relationship to the work itself. >Kit and Surge Honestly I think breaking them up and putting them on rival teams is probably a pretty good place for them to go right now. Yeah, if you asked me a year ago, I would've said that they could have brought Starline back through Surge and Kit, especially with Surge schizoing out with a Starline in her head, but that was kinda dropped. Another missed opportunity was not having her and Kit be part of the team to bring down Mimic, that team of Tangle, Whisper, Kit, and Surge just seems a lot more interesting and with potential for conflict. >Lanolin I like ABT’s characterization of her being a Schizo, but leading a rival group within the Restoration is also a really good idea. Heck if you don't want to add more OCs but want to increase the rivalry team her up with Surge and Kit. Now they got clouds/thunder(sheep tits and Maggie), rain, and lightning.
>>21071 >Yeah that's the problem with this sort of ascended Superman, I think a good fan that comes in to officially work on a thing they like needs to be aware of the fandom outside of their own circle, as well as having a professional relationship to the work itself. Exactly! The very fact that you have such a strong attachment to the franchise means you've got to be extra careful about your blindspots >Honestly I think breaking them up and putting them on rival teams is probably a pretty good place for them to go right now. That would've been a lot more interesting. Having Kit constantly simp for Surge is getting annoying, and having them be stronger apart would be an interesting contrast with Sonic and Tails, who are stronger together >but that was kinda dropped They also dropped Kit working with Tails just as fast. It seems like the comic has all these interesting ideas but snuffs them out before anything can come of them >Another missed opportunity was not having her and Kit be part of the team to bring down Mimic That could've been handled so much better, and it's a fun troupe where a villain is actually way more competent against anyone other than their rival >I like ABT’s characterization of her being a Schizo Yeah, ABT's on to something there. Way more compelling than being head party pooper for the Restoration. For my idea, I'd lean on the Sally comparison and make her companion be like Nicole, but with more of a holographic vocaloid twist. Basically a catty Miku >>21073 Still no news on Sonic Blitz, despite doing a technical and soft launch in the Philippines and Brazil a few months ago. I'm interested to see if they actually keep the Sonic Underground characters that were datamined
>>21067 >one of the plot points is about the development of Knuckles' sexy leather jumpsuit we see in M25YL LOL, and here I was kidding!
>spoiler That actually works nicely. It's a way for Locke to somewhat atone for what he's done, since he's responsible for Knuckles' Chaos powers.
>wasn't going to include Droid, but now I'll have to get a reference in somehow! Won't be too hard, Robotnik/Eggman had like fifteen different incarnations in Archie Sonic. Gotta love villains like that, who keep popping in from alternate dimensions and timelines. One of my faves is Reverse-Flash. With Joker, everyone asks why Batman doesn't kill him, but with Reverse-Flash, the Flash HAS killed him several times but it just never sticks, lol.
>spoiler Lol, Penders getting in one last horribly inappropriate contribution to the Sonic franchise. Figures.
>The editor was pretty clear that Ian's first major job was to trim down the cast and simplify the plots so my guess is this was one of the first to go. Makes sense, Knuckles was really starting to steal the comic from Sonic.
>You can tell he's trying to resolve it with the Knuckles-as-Enerjak plot, but it's just not the same. I actually hadn't realized that. The Enerjak Reborn and "Knuckles Destiny" crap seems so diametrically opposed in intention that I hadn't really connected the two despite it now seeming obvious.
>Even worse, I plan on leaving the story exactly as it is!/spoiler As challenging as it sounds, it would be interesting to see someone try to deliver on everything Penders had built up to! I look forward to your comic, just so long as the future cast doesn't spend every issue chatting by the poolside like they did in canon.
>>21075 >LOL, and here I was kidding! If it wasn't supposed to be an important plot point, then why does he look so good in it? >That actually works nicely. It's a way for Locke to somewhat atone for what he's done, since he's responsible for Knuckles' Chaos powers. That's what I'm hoping for! It also paves the way for the secret grandpas and the Dark Legion to finally bury the hatchet >Won't be too hard, Robotnik/Eggman had like fifteen different incarnations in Archie Sonic. I really want to focus on the original good future Nicole (and maybe Robo Robotnik)'s from. The whole thing's kinda confusing, and it would be nice to finally straighten it all out. Like, we don't even know if the Cosmic Interstate just does dimensions or if it does time as well >One of my faves is Reverse-Flash. He's the worst! Dude can just decide to outrun death and it somehow works >Lol, Penders getting in one last horribly inappropriate contribution to the Sonic franchise. Figures. To be fair, I don't think he knew at the time, but the idea of Penders casually leafing through Playgirl and going, "yes, that's the guy I want to play Dr Droid!" is just too funny >Makes sense, Knuckles was really starting to steal the comic from Sonic. Penders himself said all the stories he wanted to write with Sonic that got rejected he ended up reusing them with Knuckles instead so him being the most important character tracks >I actually hadn't realized that. The Enerjak Reborn and "Knuckles Destiny" crap seems so diametrically opposed in intention that I hadn't really connected the two despite it now seeming obvious. Ian had a lot of plates spinning back then so pretty much every issue had to resolve multiple things. He was trying to make Robotnik the main threat in the comic (the Xorda, Dark Legion and even Mogul had all been bigger threats at this point), clean up some of the extended cast, make there just be seven Chaos Emeralds, kill off Tommy Turtle without it looking cruel, AND give a resolution to Knuckles' destiny. Getting all that to work without the comic reading like an absolute mess is probably Ian's greatest achievement. He even made Locke likable! >I look forward to your comic Thanks! I'm probably gonna cut all the Kintobor mess he was setting up with Shadow. Flynn was right to just ignore all of it >spoiler I'm only gonna spend a few pages in the resolved M25YL future, and I was going to move it to a park instead of poolside. I think readers want to see a happy ending, but prefer most of the pages being the exciting parts with action and intrigue. I'm definitely sneaking in a pool somewhere in the background though, complete with scary Koala lady! >>21076 >SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF FUCKING DESTROYED. Yeah, I don't think he'd do that unless the world was literally at stake. Sill, I wish Shadow and Knuckles would interact more. They've got a lot in common, considering they're both stoic relics from the past dropped into the modern world
>>21077 >It also paves the way for the secret grandpas and the Dark Legion to finally bury the hatchet For that to happen, they'll probably have to kill off Moritori Rex. Spectre really hated his ass for replacing his father.
>The whole thing's kinda confusing, and it would be nice to finally straighten it all out. It was hard to blame Ian for how loosey-goosey he was with some of that cosmic bullshit. Like when Zonic justifies Eggman/Robo-Robotnik taking the old Robotnik's place with "There must always be a Sonic and Robotnik!" or something. It would've been easy to nitpick, but since Ian was having to pick up after decades of continuity & 3 different writers having slapfights, I was willing to cut him some slack. Like you said, a lot of plates spinning.
>Like, we don't even know if the Cosmic Interstate just does dimensions or if it does time as well I figured it was just dimensions, wasn't it? We never saw anyone use it to travel to different time periods, though admittedly that isn't entirely conclusive since Blaze doesn't use it to travel from the Sol Dimension.
>I'm probably gonna cut all the Kintobor mess he was setting up with Shadow. Flynn was right to just ignore all of it That was the "Good, Bad, and the Unknown" shit, right? Agreed. Ian was right to just write it off as a malfunctioning robot worshipping a corpse or whatever. I barely even remember it.
>spoiler Who had the most un-Sonic-like anthro design in Archie? The Koala lady or Knuckles' rival, Monk the Gorilla?
>Sill, I wish Shadow and Knuckles would interact more. They've got a lot in common, considering they're both stoic relics from the past dropped into the modern world Agreed, it would be fun to watch them both bicker without ever realizing how much they have in common. I enjoyed the Postboot Archie arcs where they loathed eachother only to work pretty well together whenever they had to unite against a common foe.
So, a whole lot has gone down while I was away, but laziness has kept me from doing the first Throwback Thursday of the thread! and that cannot do! Throwback Thursday #11 "Smash Bros - Bubsy" by GENZOMAN (2014) https://www.deviantart.com/genzoman/art/Smash-Bros-Bubsy-487409991
>>20285 >You know, all this could've been avoided if Flynn would just relent and add in the Zeti OCs like Iizuka wanted. We could probably even have Sonally if they stuck some horns on her Reminded me of this: How would Ian incorporate Naugus into the games? where Ian talks about brining back Naugus as a Zeti who can control organics instead of robotics. We are and have continue to be robbed of Zeti characters. Ian, where is Zaugaus?
>>21108 In a strange way, I'd say they got along pretty well. Knuckles was one of the few people Sonic respected. He did make fun of Knuckles but there were times he would talk about how tough he was. And Knuckles was more calm and level headed to the point that he was getting beaten by Super Sonic, Sonic changed back, and Knuckles was like "I don't know what that was but whatever." They're like two leads in a buddy cop movie.
Things start out pretty innocently enough. Locke and Dimitri take turns watching over little Knuckles. Both have their own work but raising a kid is just as important. No jumping into a wall of fire for either of them! (Note: That’s referring to what Locke did in the Archie comics. He jumps into a wall of fire, something kid Knuckles watches, when it’s actually a hologram and the entrance to Haven, a high tech station on Angel Island where Locke and all other guardians stay to watch over the children they abandoned and do not much else.)
>>21074 Yeah having Surge and Kit break up due to Surge's antics is a pretty good point to introduce some conflict. I still really like the idea of having Surge work with Whisper and Tangle since I think it could do wonders for their characters to have them on a team together, there's tension between them there and you can give Whisper something else to do instead of her repeating the Mimic storyline again. All they need is a shared goal, some point of conflict to have the characters converge on. I think having her be the one going against Clean Sweep would have been a better choice as well, she can interact with the Chaotix and Shadow went through something similar to what Surge is currently going through. Shadow can give her some perspective and Clutch is a villain Surge formerly worked with, although its not like the story can't move in this direction right now either. Someone made fun of the suggestion last thread, but I think having the various heroes fight over the chaos emeralds would also be a good idea, Sonic of team restoration, Shadow on team GUN, Surge and Kit trying to come in for the glory and make themselves look cool.
>>21078 >For that to happen, they'll probably have to kill off Moritori Rex. Spectre really hated his ass for replacing his father. Honestly, I'd love to give Spectre something to do so having him kill Moritori would be fun >It was hard to blame Ian for how loosey-goosey he was with some of that cosmic bullshit. Ian did his best, but he had alternate zone and alternate futures from Penders, Bollers and Dan Slott. Nicole and Robo Robotnik are from a future where the FFs ended up as cyborgs, but also got better, but also also had Robo Robotnik wipe out everyone. The weird thing is Sonic meets Cyborg Sonic, meaning it could just be an alternate zone/dimension https://archiesonic.fandom.com/wiki/Alternate_Future >That was the "Good, Bad, and the Unknown" shit, right? It was! Yeah, Ian had the right idea dumping it immediately. Shadow's backstory is messy enough in Archie without ancient Xorda-hating humans showing up to muddle things further >Who had the most un-Sonic-like anthro design in Archie? Monk at least has that hilarious "I'm trying to draw like Jack Kirby but it's not working out" vibe, but the Koala haunts my dreams. We all know it's that swan Vector dances with while Knuckles macks on Julie-Su >Agreed, it would be fun to watch them both bicker without ever realizing how much they have in common. Yeah, postboot got some great interactions with them and I could see that becoming grumpy friends that can vent about Sonic and Rouge's antics >>21081 Forty Fathoms Freedom Fighters Forever! Seriously though, it's a massive waste. Mimic being an octopus allowed for a really interesting design, to the point where a lot of his popularity is more from that than his actual plot >>21082 Fun fact: that artist did the Clash of the Titans tie-in comic
>>21083 The levels borrow heavily from recent Sonic and Mario games, but it does look kinda fun. I like that you can change outfits, but the inflation power is just *shudder* >>21085 >those hips Wew! >>21090 sigh would >>21095 >>21097 This is a tricky one! Bara art is almost 100% drawn by dudes, but the artstyle still reads lady to me. There are a few lady bara artists though >>21107 >Lesbian Fleetway Sonknux Huh. Still pretty cute though >>21108 >>21112 It's one of the few continuities where they come across as just friends. They do seem to get each other more than most characters do. IMO Fleetwaynic's the least romantically inclined Sonic, to the point you could argue he's not interested at all. Personally I see it as him being too emotionally traumatized after unwittingly turning his best friend/mentor/father figure into the abomination that took over their world. I don't think he feels he's deserving of romance until Kintobor's restored, or at least Mobius is safe from Robotnik Total headcanon, but he definitely had an unspoken crush on Johnny that he wasn't yet ready to act on >>21113 I really do love the cool uncle Dimitri angle. It ties in really well with chill head in a jar Dimitri >>21117 >>21120 lmao, that's by MissPhase, who's famous for that genre! They've done a heap of comics where Sonic gets transformed into a fem bimbo Fun fact: Busby's creator fully endorses trans streetwalker disaster Busby and considers it canon >>21128 Way better chemistry than Sonadow >>21129 Dandi does some absolutely fantastic art of Sonic and of Knuckles. It's a shame he won't age up the other characters he draws >>21132 Now there's a rare ship! >>21144 Yeah, Whisper and Tangle devolve into relationship drama far too quickly so adding Surge would help focus attention away from that. It'd be saving the writers from theirselves! >I think having her be the one going against Clean Sweep would have been a better choice as well It'd be a much more interesting take on the standard redemption arc, since while the outcome would be to cement her position as a hero, her actual goal is getting revenge on Clutch >Someone made fun of the suggestion last thread, but I think having the various heroes fight over the chaos emeralds would also be a good idea, Sonic of team restoration, Shadow on team GUN, Surge and Kit trying to come in for the glory and make themselves look cool. Fighting over the Chaos Emeralds were easily some of the most fun (post and pre) boot Archie stories and an easy way to add some action and group interactions to the comic while contrasting motivations. There's a reason pretty much every manga adds a tournament storyline! >>21145 Having Rouge and Sonic trying to one up each other with innuendo should be far more commonplace tbh >>21154 I've got it archived if you need a copy. The images are way easier to download if you go to the Mobile View page >>21162 Probably the janny that's ABIB's special friend. He used to try to disrupt our threads over on 4/co/ because Archie Sonic fans bullied him or something
🚨Breaking Penders News™🚨 https://x.com/KenPenders/status/1959145633723687197 >I normally don't discuss business in public, but I am going to be inundated with questions and so will other individuals. Since the M25YL segments from SONIC issues 166 & 167 will be included in THE SHADOW FILES, both Ian & Tracy will receive creator royalties. So does this mean Penders considers some of Ian's writing canon? For those playing at home, 166 & 167 were the King Shadow issues, which came out about two years after M25YL had finished. Fun fact: The editor told Penders the only way he'd allow more M25YL was if Penders added Shadow, and suggested making him king. Penders quit Archie after that
>>21164 >Dandi spoiler I had no idea until I saw the rest of the profile, I saw the knuckles image first. ended up adding up adding him to the blacklist because I don't want to be anywhere near that stuff.
>>21163 >We all know it's that swan Vector dances with while Knuckles macks on Julie-Su Honestly, Knuckles himself could qualify in that issue. He looked creepily human. Same with Vector.
>>21164 >The levels borrow heavily from recent Sonic and Mario games, but it does look kinda fun. Eh, every game does that. There's always a token volcano level, a token cloud level, a token swamp level, and so on.
>I really do love the cool uncle Dimitri angle. It ties in really well with chill head in a jar Dimitri It also makes Locke look even hilariously worse, since an evil supervillain is a better father figure than him.
>Way better chemistry than Sonadow Jet's like the only Sonic rival who actually seems to want to have a big dick-stroking contest with Sonic. Shadow mostly just wants Sonic to piss off.
>>21162 >>21164 >Probably the janny that's ABIB's special friend. He used to try to disrupt our threads over on 4/co/ because Archie Sonic fans bullied him or something It's the Tailscel. He's asking if Sonic's a Mary Sue and insisting on the most uncharitable interpretations of all Sonic/Tails interactions as usual.
>>21173 You don't have to, the drawthread is dead and I was hoping with new requests it might come back. Everyone should just post requests regardless.
>>21163 >Yeah, postboot got some great interactions with them and I could see that becoming grumpy friends that can vent about Sonic and Rouge's antics >Vector: Mysterious pasts. >Relic: Genetically altered. >Julie-Su: Teased by friends. >Espio: Incredibly stubborn. >Knuckles & Shadow punch each other, getting cross countered. >Charmy: You'd think they would like each other. Also 5 on Shadow. >Mighty: Charmy! Also, yeah 5 on Shadow. >Omega: TEN ON THE GUARDIAN.

>>21200 If I had a dime for every "innocent" anthro comic where the characters all looked like they were five seconds from an orgy, I could build my own Death Egg.
>>21202 kek, I was just thinking that. The author can't even give his big bara lumberjack character normal overalls and/or a plaid shirt, he has to have him shirtless with his overalls hanging down around his waist.
>>21214 NTA but Sage has some issues. >her bond with Eggman could be seen as OOC if you interpret Eggman as being a totally evil bastard >her big redemption and sacrifice is a bit too similar to Shadow's arc in SA2 >the "creepy emotionless robot girl" isn't exactly fresh or original
I don't really hate the character, but she's nothing spectacular.
>>21214 TLDR: Sage has no real character and is replaceable, also she is shit.
Where do I even fucking start? Oh I know! Let’s start with her non-existent character. Just like the game pretends to be le deep and meaningful the game also pretends Sage is le deep and meaningful. Her shitty arc of emotionless inferior Rei expy (that's been done a billion times better in other media) only to suddenly cry like 2 or 3 cut scenes into the game is retarded. What ‘arc’ happened to her to make her suddenly do this? None that’s what. Her interactions with Sonic are literally ‘’GET THE FUCK OF THE ISLAND’’ and ‘’YOU ARE THE ENEMY REEEEEEEE’’ (Even though her calculations said working with Sonic is the best outcome) It’s like the retards over at Sonic Team suddenly decided to give Eggman an unneeded Daughter without actually thinking about why Eggman would need one in the first place.
She does nothing but seethe and cope floating around the Islands, looking at Sonic running around doing all the work whiles he tries to get his useless fucking friends out of the cum jars. Any of Eggman’s creations could have done the same thing. Imagine how fun it would be if it was Metal and he was just constantly chasing you around the Island trying to fucking kill you instead of talk you to death like Sage.
She does not bounce of anyone like how Prototype Orbot bounced of Eggman in Unleashed. Metal had a reason to go against Eggman in Heroes – his obsession with being the real Sonic. Omega has his based as fuck hateboner. Sage has nothing, she’s obedient (like Orbot and Cubot) and does everything in her power to make Eggman happy, but in that regard how does that separate her from Orbot and Cubot? Or even an Eggpawn? -but le human emotions one might say. And to that I say that’s shallow as fuck and completely misses the point of who she is supposed to influence… Eggman’s character.
Eggman is a selfish, self centered, massive egomaniac, why does he need to be dragged down by emotion? He does not care, value or see his creations as anything more than that- creations, ends to a means. He plasters his face on everything because he’s that much of a narcissistic bitch. Eggman does not, and has never needed a fucking arc. Taking away all that so he can ‘love’ someone fucking destroys his character. Eggman feeling sad that one of his creations died is stupid, he can easily create another. The bond Eggman and Sage have is superficial and forced, like Sonic Team decided we MUST make these two work no matter what, consequences be dammed.
You could remove or replace Sage in frontiers and very fucking little would change, she does nothing that Eggman or another one of his creations (Orbot/Cubot/Metal) could have done themselves. Which is probably why Orbot and Cubot got completely ignored this game. Also nothing was stopping Tails figuring out how to pilot the Supreme – god forbid we give the second most intelligent character in the game something REAL to do. It’s so fucking sad to see so many applaud this shallow excuse of a character, a so called character who adds nothing of any real value to Frontiers, to Eggman and this fucking franchise as a whole. And because Frontiers sold well and people think the story is good, she now gets to stick around like malignant tumor dragging Eggman’s character down to the point of no return.
>>21164 >I've got it archived if you need a copy. The images are way easier to download if you go to the Mobile View page Turns out I may not have the page that this is stored at.
>>21218 >Eggman is a selfish, self centered, massive egomaniac, why does he need to be dragged down by emotion? Eggman's character is so schizophrenic. He's a goofy comedic villain in most media, but is pure evil in the comics, but is sympathetic at the end of SA2 and Frontiers.
Same with Sonic. He's a laid-back cool guy in the games, a self-righteous dope in IDW, a sarcastic grump in Fleetway, and so on.
And if you ask five different Sonic fans, you'll get five different opinions on which of these are the "true" characterizations.
>>21223 >but is sympathetic at the end of SA2 Because Sonic Team legit thought that would be the last Sonic game ever made. That's why it ending is so melancholic. Never forget that Shadow was supposed to die for real. Also Sonic X Eggman would absolutely vibe with Sage I won't deny that.
>>21225 I like the explanation that Eggman was legitimately going to retire from super villainy but Tails response caused him to keep on being a super villain.
>>21226 It's a shame since psychotic war orphan Tails is better than psychotic Sonic.
>>21232 Tails would win since while psychotic Sonic sees the world as a game and doesn't value people's lives, he doesn't kill his enemies. Psychotic war orphan Tails on the other hand wouldn't hesitate to kill psychotic Sonic, although he would probably cry about while blabbering on about his hero.

They've been around for a quarter century now so it's not like they haven't had the time Honestly, e621 is the best site for art and comics at this point, even if it is (mostly) restricted to anthro stuff. I've complained enough about the non-Toasty Tails coloring being used in Penders' recolor, but is it just me or are they giving the SatAM Robotnik design a pink nose? It's pink in the AoStH version (as is Eggman's), but I don't think we ever got the AoStH design in Archie outside of some promotional material
>>21398 >Locke is a socially-inept workaholic with bad parenting skills but is a good guy >Dimitri is pleasant, sociable, and a great uncle but is secretly evil That's a pretty clever and unique dynamic, which is how I know this is a fancomic and not an official product made by any company.
>>21388 >>21395 Searching the favorites of all my favorite artists has always been a good strat to find new decent stuff, even bad artists can have a really good taste for what they pick. Too bad not some sites dont have the common sense to implement a basic search function for a favorite's gallery, like for example pixiv and furaffinity, which worsens the whole experience of looking things up even in my own account.
>>21397 Looking back, it's flesh colored in almost all the panels, actually is pink in a few >>21398 This really is a great setup. I can't believe Dimitri and his brother originally argued about whether they should go through with their plan to land Angel Island without council approval. It lands without incident several times in S3&K! >>21399 Locke trying his best to do the Sonic Adventure pose >>21400 Yeah, it's a much better way to introduce the conflict, even if you don't have to memorize their family tree! I'm not so sure I'd call Dimitri evil here, nor in Archie. He's definitely being duplicitous, but ultimately he thinks he can get one over on Enerjak and use his power for good
Both versions of Dimitri (and Locke, and all the secret grandpas) are headstrong, secretive, and willing to do shady stuff if they think it's for the greater good (or if they've convinced themselves it's for the greater good!). Ultimately they're all trying to control forces that are inherently uncontrollable, whether it's Dimitri trying to control Chaos Energy with his Chaos Siphon, Locke trying to control Knuckles' destiny with his manipulations (and microwave!), or the secret grandpas trying to control all of Mobius from their no girls allowed tree fort (it's no girls, that means one's allowed)
Dimitri only goes full evil when he's possessed by Enerjak (even Knuckles got corrupted when possessed by him, and he's an extremely skilled Chaos Energy user with an indomitable will), and then kinda falls into being the leader of the Dark Legion since he wants to protect his family. He's actually horrified by what they've become, but will do whatever's necessary to protect them. He does at least mellow out by the time he's a floating head! Lien-Da and Kragok are definitely evil though, and we wouldn't have it any other way!
>spoiler lmao >>21401 Oh that Rouge! >>21402 Yeah, that's how I like to use DA (and FA/PX/IB) but we really should be able to search through favorite galleries. Some accounts have excellent taste , but have favorited 10k or more images and there's no way I'm looking through all of that! It's particularly frustrating in FA since if someone nukes their account they sometimes choose to let images remain in the favorites galleries of other accounts, but the only way to see them is to look through each page manually >>21405 >Rouge the truck's coming! Oh my God she has headphones on! She can't hear us! Oh my God! Squidward The Trucks Coming. Oh my god he has headphones on. He can't hear us. Oh my god >>21407 I still think there's something to Tower x Shadow. Childhood frenemies, to trying to kill each other, to coworkers, to something more?
>>21353 Amy's Family 3-20 https://www.deviantart.com/princessgalaxia9 In case anyone's wondering what the poster says, it's >IN THE NAME OF LOVE written in the Standard Galactic Alphabet from the Commander Keen series
>>21408 >He's definitely being duplicitous, but ultimately he thinks he can get one over on Enerjak and use his power for good Has Conductor's comic shown what Dimitri wants with Enerjak yet? I thought this was the first we saw of Dimitri.
You're right about the Guardians all being the same as Dimitri, though. All of them were portrayed as meddling with incredible powers long before Sonic Adventure came out with Pachacamac and Chaos, oddly enough. SEGA didn't really change Penders' work so much as give it an Incan window-dressing, lol.
Another funny thing is that Dimitri eventually wound up seeming less evil than most of the supposedly "good" echidnas. He didn't throw Monk off the island, or mutate Knuckles or the Tasmanian devils, or try to have Finitevus killed, or any of the other horrible shit the "good guy" Echidnas did.
>Tower x Shadow That's even nastier than SonElise.
>>21410 Apparently it's also used for the enchanting system in Minecraft. I'll get around to playing it one of these days! ᵢₘ ₛₜᵢₗₗ ᵥᵥᵢₜₕ ᵢₜ, ₛₕᵤₜ ᵤₚ!
>>21411 Not yet, but we know Enerjak's extremely powerful and that Dimitri's definitely arrogant enough to think he can take that power for himself. Kinda like Eggman with Chaos (or Shadow, or Solaris, or Dark Gaia, or ...)
>Pachacamac I hadn't thought about that, but he's pretty much jock Dimitri
>Dimitri eventually wound up seeming less evil than most of the supposedly "good" echidnas. I don't think it was intentional for Penders making the secret grandpas end up looking so bad, but the guy does have a very paternalistic "father knows best" worldview. Still, writing them as essentially a Mobian Illuminati that's trying to control everything from the shadows does not paint them in a moral light
>He didn't throw Monk off the island I'm surprisingly fine with the whole Brotherhood Special thing. Doing absolutely fucked up shit for family is understandable, but acting like it was the right thing to do is so hypocritical
>mutate Knuckles or the Tasmanian devils To be fair, the Tasmanian Devils thing was from Ian, even if it does fit perfectly with how they actually act. Penders always wanted the Albion Echidnas to be the best and most moral society in Mobius despite them being willing to kill (green) Knuckles
>or try to have Finitevus killed Hilariously, he actually let Finitevus take him apart. Sure, it was to get back his Enerjak powers, but still!
>That's even nastier than SonElise. Sonic x literally every human woman is 100% canon! And one day Shadower will be too!
>>21412 >I don't think it was intentional for Penders making the secret grandpas end up looking so bad, but the guy does have a very paternalistic "father knows best" worldview. Still, writing them as essentially a Mobian Illuminati that's trying to control everything from the shadows does not paint them in a moral light To be fair, Penders had them refuse to take out Eggman because that would mean that Sonic and the Freedom Fighters would have nothing to do. That's the problem with those "wise old mentor" characters, either they die or turn into jobbers, or you end up wondering why they don't just take out the main villain themselves.
If I were ever writing a kung-fu series or an adventure story, I'd just do the realistic thing and have the old mentor be unable to keep up with much younger and stronger opponents. That way we'd know why the Hero(es) had to do everything.
>Doing absolutely fucked up shit for family is understandable, but acting like it was the right thing to do is so hypocritical It wouldn't have been so bad if they ever did anything otherwise. Beating up a teen bully but letting Knuckles take on all the big bad supervillains just made the Guardians look cowardly.
>To be fair, the Tasmanian Devils thing was from Ian, even if it does fit perfectly with how they actually act. Penders always wanted the Albion Echidnas to be the best and most moral society in Mobius despite them being willing to kill (green) Knuckles That was Penders' big problem, right there. He wanted it both ways -- his echidnas were "morally ambiguous" and "made tough choices," but were always portrayed as irrevocably in the right. You can't have a "morally ambiguous" character that everyone worships; you have to be willing to acknowledge that there would be people with real legit grudges against this person for the choices they made.
>Sonic x literally every human woman is 100% canon! And one day Shadower will be too! Here we were, having perfectly respectable discussions about gay hedgehog sex, and you had to bring stinky humans into it.
>>21407 She's definitely flirted with Tower to get out of shit, to no avail of course. >>21412 It's amazing how the how inept Penders made the Brotherhood. Then after he left, the Echidnas got dogwalked with the Dark Legion becoming Egg Lackeys, Echidanoplis & Albion getting blown to hell and more dirty secrets came out. I also love that it was revealed that Espio's clan also considered the Brotherhood, so much of a potential problem, that they placed a spy there and if needed, was to kill the Guardian if they went bad.
>>21420 How many failed mascots from the 90s/00s were there? >>21421 That would be hilarious. Also, it won't happen but here's someone who'd be a nice guest.
>>21423 This ad is so weird since in the actual games, Ty is all around a really nice and chill guy who's pretty easygoing, like it's odd to market your character in a way that's directly out of character for how he actually is

https://boards.4chan.org/co/thread/150186168 Didn't even know this came out. Someone storytimed it and nobody replied so I had to save it from page 10.
>>21437 That was alright I guess needed a way better inker and colorist. Not to mention, I wasn't too into this arc to begin with. Just more classic, which at this point, is played out.
>>21439 Yeah it's whatever to me but I'd like to think those that prefer the reboot are happy for some kind of closure, even if the end of the arc is just telling you to finish the game and doesn't bring anything new to the story. I know Sega had some weird rules for the reboot like not showing classic Eggman, even though he was shown at the very beginning in 252. There was also them not wanting Tails in Mobotropolis when Eggman took over. You could really feel Sega not wanting Sonic and Tails not being part of the Freedom Fighters until after the events of the Genesis games. The more I think about it in comparison to the preboot, the more soulless the reboot feels in comparison, even if a lot of messy crap was removed and it had a more unified canon.
>>21426 Wow, so blurry that I can't point out background twinks and so bland that I barely recall the plot after finishing it? No Knuckles and some Sonadow scenes for those with pleb taste? Oh boy! No eyelashes = new bland OC's a dude >>21437 It came out around the same time the thread started, and the filenames show someone ran the originals through a batch image conversion process (they were all 15-20MB). I'll convert the originals for a storytime, but they can be found here: https://archiesoniconline.com/?comic=sonic-the-hedgehog-restored-291-cover-a
>>21442 Yeah I wasn't interested in either but at least they're out there. I won't be storytiming the fancomic though. It's been done and can be found if anyone wants to read it. And it looks like not many other people are interested in the latter one. About to be archived and the IDW one hit bump limit and archived after 8 hours.
>>21441 I share the sentiment. And to think, if it continued, the weird rules would have humans just disappear because of the two worlds shit or whatever bizarre lore they were doing.
>>21441 True, I feel like a lot of what I like about the Reboot are things that could have been done better in pre-boot if they had the correct writers. Like Eclipse or the underwater Mobians. Or kind of like the Zombot arc in IDW.
>>21445 I can see one of three things happening: >archie manages to convince sega to not force them to remove all humans >humans just stop appearing and nobody says anything about it >some cataclysmic event happens and humans are wiped out of existence
>>21446 It's all Ian doing his best with a bad situation and making it work in some way. And then IDW happened and it was all downhill from there. Things would be so much better if the Archie reboot could somehow continue with IDW or if whatever remaining fucks Ian had wasn't drained by the end of the Metal Virus arc.
This is payback for Knuckles punching Super Sonic last issue. Kind of hard to pull that trick off again when you don’t have the element of surprise and your super-powered opponent can easily dodge your attacks. And of course I had to include THAT attack in the last panel.
It’s Thursday! I’ve been posting old stuff from after the new millennium, so how ‘bout something from before 2000? Throwback Thursday #13: “Old char meets copyrighted char” by Nicole Trujillo (1998) https://yerf.metafur.org/trujnico?page=5

And all the pages, including the full 27th page, was uploaded to FA two months ago.
Hey, maybe Locke is overreacting and Dimitri had his equipment outside and Knuckles didn’t see it. Or maybe the tests are conducted in his head and… okay, this does seem fishy to me. I’m sure the next page doesn’t confirm Locke’s fear and spiral out of control in record time.

>Eggman's character is so schizophrenic. He's a goofy comedic villain in most media, but is pure evil in the comics, but is sympathetic at the end of SA2 and Frontiers. Yeah, Frontiers feels weirdly more like a direct sequel to the events of SA2 with Eggman's logs in that game. I guess it makes sense to an extant, but at the same time Frontiers isn't a new canon starting from immediately after SA2 so it feels a bit weird.
>>21566 She's marginally less boring and cute, also I don't think Silver fans ever liked Nega, I don't ever remember any notable appearances of him in fan comics. He's more of a Blaze villain honestly. So I don't think they can really drop him if he wasn't that popular in the first place. But I am curious, are there any notable appearances by Nega in fan comics or fan content? Then again there is that one girl who lusts over Clutch, so who knows maybe there's a secret Nega fandom I've never heard of.
>>21567 >I don't ever remember any notable appearances of him in fan comics. Libyan Eggman and Eggman Nega in the Back to the Future Rebirth comic starring Silver.
>>21575 It is very nicely done fanart which I'm not slagging off, the city detailing is nice evoking the Ark alongside the Sonic OVA robotropolos and the background work is superb at selling a wasteland without being dull. Just even without my bias I genuinely don't think Silver's future is something I want to see anymore since there's so many variations on it already while some settings I personally prefer could be nice to see attention on.
As pure visuals goes, Silver's future is kind of redundant. I mean, there exists entire cities, vehicles, etc which are all futuristic in the present. What does his setting offer in the visual department that couldn't be done in the now?
I know, I know. Sally has had it rough this arc and just when you thought it couldn’t get worse for her, it does. But suffering is kind of Sally’s thing. And everyone else is also having a bad time. Bad time for all.
