I finished Sonic Rivals. It was mediocre and boring. There is some things I like, the classic way of doing the levels and some of the visuals. But the gameplay is just so monotonous. The story sucks with characters fighting each other with the common thing being a dumb mystery. Turns out nega was behind everything having impersonated eggman. Now being retconned as being from the future for some reason. Silver is unfortunately back and is just as unlikeable as in 06. Overall, not that great of a game. I'll be doing Rivals 2 next.

Finished Sonic Rivals 2. It's an improvement from the first. The production value was way higher as levels are more varied and there's even voice acting this time around. The level design is better and more fun. Which makes the repeat playthroughs not as bad as the first. The game adds some modes in between levels. They're alright with the knockout ones being the least fun. Rings are now more useful as they fill up the special meter, but some powers are still better than others. Bosses are generally better, but they still take too long with the final one being the worst. Racing rivals is improved but I wish it wasn't the focal point. A real next step for the 2D games could've been made without it.

While I had good things to say on the gameplay, story not so much. Writing for the characters is not as bad as before, but there's still moments of senseless fighting. It's also literally the first games plot. Not only that, it's other previous games like SA2 with the Gerald notes shit. 06 with a time traveler coming back to stop a future ruined from a fire monster. And this game came out a year after it. It's so been there, done that. And now I'm going to talk about Silver. I've mentioned multiple times how unlikeable he is because he really is. His noble intentions don't shield him from being an agressively confrontational retarded prick in both games most of the time. And this is coming after 06 where he wasn't that great. And the problems with the character already arise with his gimmick. Coming back yet again to save the future is already old by this point. I can definitively say that Silver is just a bottom tier character. I'll be doing the storybook games next.

TLDR: Alright game, play and ignore dumb story. Silver a shit.

Essentially done doing the first world of Sand Oasis. Did not have a good time. The controls are clunky as fuck. Especially if you try going bakwards. Even with the crazy decision to hide Sonic controlling better behind upgrades, it's still not great. Rail grinding is finicky as hell. The homing attack sucks with it just killing all momentum. The level is not fun with said controls making it worse. Not to mention these shitty boring missions you need to complete to progress. Like don't break the jar, collect the rings, etc. It sucks and this is just the beginning of the game.

SatSR is such a mess and it's 100% down to the awful controls. I never finished it on the wii since the the controls never seemed to respond when I needed them to in the pirate level boss. I did beat the entire game in one session using the Dolphin emulator and mapping the wiimote waggling to an old 360 controller. SatBK is way more fun, has much better controls, and is my absolute favorite Sonic story

I like Hesse's designs for Rough & Tumble (obviously!) and Tangle, but most of the OCs are overdesigned. Even Gay Duck could have done with another round of design revisions. Mimic's fantastic though, and is the only threat that has so far felt menacing. Dude's done more just holding a knife than any other IDW villain

When Sonic regularly defeats deities like Solaris and Dark Gaia, getting the senior's discount at restaurants is just not gonna cut it. I still think that Sonic needs a magic user as a reoccurring villain. If I were writing, I'd have a geneticist who studied under Gerald, but became jaded after what GUN did.
They'd be obsessed with Project Shadow, to the point where they're trying to become the true ultimate lifeform themselves by constantly modifying their body, so they'd appear young despite being in their 80s. Also, all those changes would give a different set of abilities for each encounter, which would keep Sonic on his toes.
They'd hate Eggman (he's Gerald's true successor, not him!), really hate GUN, want to capture Sonic and friends to replicate their abilities, and be creepily fixated on Shadow. They could even have their own henchmen/acolytes, with maybe a cultish vibe

I posted this on /co/ once, but I had an idea for a Sonic villain who was a sabretooth tiger sorcerer who was still around in the present day not because he was immortal, but because he's undead. He could be recurring because the heroes DO kill him, but he just doesn't stay down because death never stopped him before.

You could even have him come back as different undead; like in one game he's a lich, then he's a zombie, then he's a vampire, etc.

Fleetway had to grow alongside the franchise when it didn't have much as it did now. The comic thrived when new games came out as it did adaptations for big stories. IDW is limited in what it can use. Classic era characters can only be in classic era comics like the character specials and Fang miniseries. A lot of Sonic games are one and done with the story concluded and non-Eggman villain dead and Sega won't allow them to be brought back. Humans haven't appeared in the comics despite Tails Tube saying they're still around. GUN is gone and Sega won't let IDW bring them back before them. They can't move past Frontiers just yet, probably have to wait until the next new 3D game. It's a really limiting area they're stuck in. Meanwhile Fleetway had a lot more freedom and could use anything from the games. I will say that Fleetway had the same problem as IDW in that it had difficulty doing original stories, especially later when it just became repeats of stories with random civilians going evil for reasons.

Maybe when you say it like that. I still don't think they're in THAT dire of a situation. Able to make stories using elements available like metal virus, bad guys, and the current racing arc. As for humans and GUN, honestly not really needed. Plenty of stories have been done without both and will continue to. Not seeing the big problem with not moving past Frontiers. It was a hollow story; the only thing of ""worth"" was a boring lackey. If anything, doing without it is better. I'll give you the classic thing, as it's dumb. Non-Eggman villains is a problem, but the game ones dead/put away weren't too great. Erazor being the exception. IDW has made their own to remedy this, the mileage may vary, but I'd rather take them than cosmic horror of the week.

The burden is also on the writers. It is possible to come up with good stories without needing the games and under their restrictions. Ian was doing okay at the start as he was using Sonic Heroes and his unused Metal Virus story but after that he just stopped caring. He got criticized for MV, mainly for how long it was, and scaled things back and then he got work for stuff aside from the comics. Then comes in Evan and her writing conflicts from Ian's. When they work together it's fine but when it's just her, the stakes are much lower and honestly I find her boring. I'd take a burned out Ian over her at her best.

I just find her writing boring. The stories are boring, the conflicts are boring, the characters are boring, their interactions are boring. Nothing exciting happens and the stuff that should be exciting just isn't. But that's me. I've seen people like the comics although I'd say they argue more about the characters than anything else. Penders is boring because he focuses on the wrong stuff and prefers uninteresting conversations that come off as padding when that's the focus of his work. He Frankensteins content from scifi movies into Sonic and Knuckles comics and uses the characters to push stories he wanted to tell with his own characters. I'd even put Penders over her. And Penders is still a garbage writer, Evan is a better writer than him. But misguided as it is, there's ambition in what Penders has written. I don't get any of that from Evan. Her IDW writing pales in comparison to her Archie stuff and GotF. Silver Age may not have been the most exciting Sonic Universe arc but it at least had something to it. Evan can write a compelling story. I've seen that with GotF. But I haven't seen that level of competency since.
