Actually I think I know why it happens. The replacement is done on every matching string that is found globally. So when the first >>6 part is matched, it will match the beginning of the >>639 and replace it with a backlink; and the rest of the >>639 has been replaced and therefore no longer matches. I'll put it on my todo list.

So, one of my many (many!) vices is occasionally reading the tumblr of randomfox (dour comics/Flynn-hating vorefag) mostly because I enjoy seeing all the comic and Flynn vitriol interspersed with surprisingly good takes on game lore and characterization, and because vore will never not be hilarious. Prime's only canon in the sense that it's an official piece of Sonic media that Sega wants you to spend money on. AoStH and SatAM were also canon at one point too (at least to SoA). The only exceptions are Boom, which was explicitly marketed as a sub-series with its own continuity, and the films, which Sega has little to no control over

That's the trick, it's not! Fun fact: But(t)ler and the others that worked on these issues wanted nothing to do with it and are wisely not receiving any money. In general, Sega will let fans make any sort of fan content, but they can only charge money for it if the proceeds are going to charity. They're also fine with things like Patreon provided everything's made available for free, so fans are just donating to the artist in general and not directly paying for content.

A while back Sega's legal team told one of the fangame developers to stop charging money for access, which I think caused the fan developers to shut the entire project. Frankly Penders is lucky Sega's so permissive with fan content. If it were Nintendo or Disney, Penders would've been sued for even thinking the word Echidna too loudly

Sega is the laziest company when it comes to their IP. They just drop and forget stuff and never try to cash in on it. At best something gets used in a mobile game. Nintendo would've erased Penders the second he was in court. Disney wouldn't leave a body. Penders would be a face on the side of a milk carton. I wouldn't be surprised if Paramount was more willing to sue him. They could score all the stuff he claimed and use it in their shows and movies.

I have no idea what's wrong with Sega. They don't know what to do with Sonic, don't seem to care enough about Sonic to really give the games a budget or time to be fleshed out, and yet they are willing to whore out Sonic to everything in the west (that they either hate or could care less about) and give as many restrictions as they feel like on a given day.

You're talking about when Knuckles piloted the island like a mech and blasted the Death Egg with a big-ass lightning cannon, right? Absolute fucking kino. One of my favorite ever Fleetway moments, and one I use to recommend the comic to others. It's one of the craziest and most badass scenes in the whole thing.

Yes! Lightning of Laputa is something for sure was the inspiration for that. Indeed, it's very bad ass. Angel Island having things like that hidden, waiting to be used is something that should be leaned upon I think. All the more reason for Knuckles to protect the island than just keeping it afloat.

Agreed, we need to learn a few more of Angel Island's hidden secrets, as well as learn more about the Master Emerald. I've heard people debate the "destroy the Master Emerald so that Knuckles can move on" idea before, and I really do get both sides.

The Master Emerald hasn't been relevant since the Adventure Era, and we already know that Chaos is what wiped out the echidnas. It's frustrating to have one of the franchise's most beloved characters stuck guarding a big magic MacGuffin that doesn't seem to have much further story potential.

But at the same time, the Island gives Knuckles a sense of responsibility, and his backstory is deeply tied in with the Island and the Emerald. So having more to explore with both is a good way of bringing Knuckles in.

I see what you mean. Despite it being Penders, he had a good idea with Knuckles having his own adventures on the island and even sometimes off it too. Wasn't always the best executed lmao, but it wasn't too bad of an idea for someone to try it again, like conductors ongoing of it.

But Game Knuckles can never really have that luxury since he's really the only one on it but regular animals. Yeah there's been some ideas of dealing with the guardian problem with like shade to guard it if she was canon. But then people would be like, "okay but i'd like to see shade too"

If it were up to me, i'd bring those fleetway robots into canon or have tails build some automatic protection with Knuckles' okay. That way, Knuckles could leave for a good while for stories without much problem. No more of that "WHY IS HE JUST LEAVING IT UNPROTECTED?!?!" because there is something to do that for that exact purpose

iirc if you used the level select, you could select characters, and the character order was something like, sonic & tails, sonic only, tails only, knuckles. except that knuckles was not properly implemented (he was taken out of the game as it got split in two), so he had sonics palette and his routes were only half functional.
either that or you could use game genie codes to activate him, I forgot, this is a 30 years old glitch by now.

What makes this even funnier is that if you check out their personal blog, the guy behind the comic was still reblogging Sonic art as little as a day ago. This isn't a case of "I don't have an active interest in Sonic anymore", it's a case of "I don't want to be associated with Sonic in my personal work" (which is a riot, because they have an art blog that's 90% memes/funposts when it's not Hatsune Miku or Cruelty Squad).

Just got banned from all boards via /tg/ for posting in a designated board quality thread for responding to a post calling out the mods for literally engineering most of the funposting and spam on the board/site, and also pointing out that they protect certain pet spammers.

What makes this really funny is that there was a faggot actively defending the stupid shit they do and saying "mods don't personally ban anyone, it's people spamming and reporting that causes them to act" and he was calling everyone paranoid schizos for thinking the moderation was out to get them. Conveniently, every post addressing him or saying stuff that contradicted his narrative (including mine) was deleted and the users presumably banned, before the thread itself was deleted. Meaning it was likely a janny or one of the other staff coming in to defend himself by banning everyone who called them out.

What I want to know is why ban anyone if you were just going to delete the thread anyway.

I like him being a dark mirror for Knuckles as well as heightening his discrimination towards others, especially echidnas. I actually had to work with his dialogue a bit, keep it down as best as possible, and was even thinking of having it take up part of the next page. Yeah, it's kinda weird how with all the dark counterparts we had for Sonic (Scourge, Jack, Lightning Lynx, Shard, etc), we never really got anything similar for Knuckles (unless you count Finitivus, but I consider him more of a Locke counterpart). You'd think Penders would've had one of the Dark Legion be the guardian of some magic rock that keeps their dimension stable.

More progress! I've exported the texture in a format that's the same shape as regular maps. It looks kinda bad at the poles since trying to flatten a sphere into a square causes distortions. Some interesting things I've noticed:
* There's an equivalent of the UK in Sonic's world and they're pretty much in the same location
* Unlike our world, there's land at the north pole, which replaces Greenland/Russia/Canada/Alaska
* not-Africa is separated from not-Europe by a sea
* not-Asia is separated from not-Southeast Asia by a sea
* not-The Middle East is now where North America should be
* The Americas have merged with Antarctica and for some reason there's no ice present

Had some thoughts on why not-Antarctica/The Americas don't have ice at the pole like our Antarctica does:
* There's no Antarctic Circumpolar Current to keep an ice sheet
* Sonic's world is slightly warmer than ours
* The continent at their south pole isn't as high as Antarctica (seriously, Antarctica is mostly the height of the Rocky Mountains)

Thanks! It's so frustrating since we just get one location for each country so we don't even know where their borders are. It's also weird that we don't get the name of not-America, and instead just get the name of one of its cities.
I think they kept some of the names for the continents from the preboot, presumably since Penders didn't come up with them. Having the continents' names still sounded like our versions, even after thousands of years was a nice touch

They can say they're playing for laughs but Sonic (and the crowd!) are clearly into it. I don't think Flynn does it intentionally, but he writes them just like a couple that flirt by teasing each other. They're constantly making bedroom eyes at each other and make way more physical contact than is strictly necessary. It's not even limited to Archie, Frontiers, many of the other games, and even the Sonic Channel art has them like this

It happened on one fine day, early afternoon on Angel Island.

In the middle of the jungle, where giant trees and mosses grow in abundance, Knuckles is digging around on the ground with a serious expression on his face, looking for something.

It was then when Sonic suddenly jumped on Knuckles’s head.

“Hey, Knuckles! What are you doing?”

“Sonic! What’s the big idea?!”

Sonic caught Knuckles, who was hurriedly diving into the ground, and tried to greet him, but when he saw Knuckles’s serious reaction, he couldn’t help but want to tease him.

“I mean, if you see a mole going in and out of its hole, wouldn’t you want to whack it?”

“What’d you say?!”

Sonic dodges Knuckles, who jumps at him, just in the nick of time. The slapstick, where it is not clear whether it is a fight or a chase, continues for a while…

“…I’ve called out to you many times, so it’s your fault for not noticing.”

“Shut it. Man, you’re still the same jerk I’ve always known.”

After they were both exhausted and had finally caught their breath, Knuckles started to tell him about a dream he had this morning.

A dream of his distant ancestors wearing ancient tribal garments.

“As a descendant of the Knuckles clan, we have something for you. Search the jungle,” they said.

“I can’t describe it, but I definitely sense something around here… I know it.”

Knuckles looks around with a docile expression on his face.

His interest as a treasure hunter, as well as his sentimentality as the last of the Knuckles clan, made him look more serious than ever.

“OK, that sounds interesting. I’ll help you find that treasure! …We’re chums, aren’t we?”

“What’re you on about? Don’t act so buddy-buddy. Get off my island!”

…As he said that, Knuckles raises his fist in the air, and it seems as if the chase is about to begin again, but Sonic dodges it and trips over something and falls.

“Oww…!”

“Heh, serves you right!”

Knuckles laughed out loud, but at that moment, the earth shook from deep within the ground!

*Rummmmble!*

A small altar made of stone, similar in construction to the ruins at Mystic Ruins, rises up from the depths of the earth. It seems that the pebble on which Sonic tripped was a switch.

On top of the altar was a box, also made of stone.

“You can thank me now, Knuckles.”

“Yeah, thanks for awkwardly stumbling around.”

Knuckles opened the stone box and found a pair of gloves inside. They are the heavy, clawed battle gloves of the ancient Knuckles clan.

“I see. This is a gift that will make me fight harder. It’s a gift that is typical of the “Knuckles clan,” a combat tribe!”

“…”

Knuckles finally finds the treasure, but after a few moments of silence, he puts the lid back on the box. While Sonic looks on in disbelief, Knuckles starts talking with a bold smile while staring at his clenched fists.

“Sorry ancestors, but my current gloves are good enough for me… I just need to be able to protect what is important to me. Even without using such a grandiose item, I wouldn’t lose to anyone in the first place.”

Knuckles is certainly quick to fight and can be a bit rough, but all he wants is the safety and peace of the Master Emerald, and his two fists are there to protect it.

Sonic seemed to have a re-examined perspective on Knuckles, thinking that this was the kind of guy he was. …But seeing Knuckles say such admirable things makes him want to tease him again.

“Exactly! You don’t use tools, you use brute force. That’s what makes you Knuckles!”

“…Who’re you calling a brute?”

Knuckles approaches Sonic while wearing gloves handed down from his ancestors.

“I thought you said you didn’t need them!”

“Shut up! Get back here!”

And so their slapstick, which could be described as neither fighting nor chasing each other, continued in the jungle of Angel Island for a while…

A fighting buddy to run to when the time comes!

Knuckles is a powerful red echidna.

As his name suggests, he has two powerful fists, and he lives alone, guarding the mysterious floating island called Angel Island, which was left behind by an ancient civilization, and the Master Emerald that resides there.

It seems that he had already been assigned to guard this island for as long as he can remember. He didn’t know how it happened, his roots, or even the details of the Master Emerald he was supposed to protect, but he had spent his life as a guardian, honestly and without questioning his mission… that’s what Knuckles is all about.

If Sonic is the ever-moving “wind,” then Knuckles is the unmoving “mountain.”

Knuckles’s encounter with Sonic was a shocking one!

Knuckles, tricked by Eggman into thinking Sonic was the bad guy, suddenly attacked him and caused him to fall over.

At that time, Sonic was in his “Super Sonic” state, using the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds.

Even though it took him by surprise, Knuckles’s power to stop Sonic in this state is something to behold!

They had such a dreadful encounter in a sense, but in the end, the misunderstanding was cleared up and together they crushed Eggman’s ambitions in the story of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – Sonic & Knuckles.

Although their first impression of each other, their personalities, and their rivalry did not make them “good friends,” they have since had several adventures and been on good terms, always rushing to each other’s aid in a pinch.

They may exchange quips and complain to each other, but when it comes time to act, they are in perfect harmony. Small details aside, they know what’s really important without having to say a word. Such is the bond that exists between the two of them.

They’re rivals, they’re fighting buddies… In the sense of a relationship that “requires no holding back,” it may be as close as the one with Tails.

The two of them will continue to show their many activities during adventures. All while they occasionally fight…!

See, I'm not crazy! About that at least! Yeah, Sonic is canonically obsessed with Knuckles in a way he doesn't act with any other character. Knuckles may act like he hates it, but it's clear he likes the attention. Sonic's pestering is actually kinda sweet when you think about it. Knuckles has lived most of his life alone, with nothing but his sense of duty and constant physical training to keep him from going crazy. He doesn't really know how to interact socially outside of his rigid social customs and is completely touch starved.
It's not brought up often, but Sonic (along with Rouge) is one of the most emotionally intelligent characters in the franchise, so it's no accident he makes a lot of physical contact, banters, and spars with him. By getting Knuckles to engage with people outside his social customs in a way he's comfortable with (i.e., violence and arguments), Sonic's helping him get used to people

It's fascinating how he can make is art simultaneously blurry, overly detailed and greasy. The poor composition, inconsistent shading and color balance is a nice touch. It's also nice to see Geoffrey, the main character in Archie, front and center with his extremely muscular thighs. You can tell Penders is a talented artist because he gets the details right: Lesser artists always forget that Metal only has nine fingers and that Sonic's right hand doesn't have an arm connecting to his body, but not our Penders!

Fun fact: In my rewrite, I was going to have a young Gerald team up with Sonic's biological parents Jules and Bernie, who would be archeologists that dressed like Indiana Jones and Lara Croft. There'd be sexual tension and later plapping. When exploring Angel Island, they'd meet Knuckles, an amnesiac immortal that's been guarding the island since Tikal raised it into the sky and sealed away Chaos. Essentially, every time he dies, the Master Emerald resets his body and mind, restoring him to an 18yo with only vague recollections of his past.
Unknown to them, Gerald would use Jules and Bernie's "genetic samples" ;) to make Sonic, the original ultimate lifeform. They'd go on to have their "first" child Chuck, who would happen to discover Sonic's capsule 35 years later and raise him as his "nephew," making Jules and Bernie Sonic's "grandparents"

It's pretty much the only way that allows Knuckles to exist without raising depressing questions about his childhood. As it stands, Echidna civilization slowly died out, with Knuckles' parents dying when he was young, leaving him as the last Echidna. Knuckles and Sonic both having amnesia gives them more in common and highlights their wildly different coping mechanisms (Sonic lives in the moment, Knuckles is obsessed with finding out about his past)

I like kinda like/HATE it. Like for how it does explain why there’s no body else. Seriously no canon explanation why knuckles is just alone and what happened to the recent echidnas. Movies at least did that and I like it. But for hate, I hate it because it’s part of that fan comics absolute cluster fuck with the knuckle£ plot. For years they kept dragging along about knuckles looking to find what happened to his people and more history. Then they decide to have Zachary blow all that shit up and set knuckles to zero. And even according to leaked files I’ve seen from a former member of their potential plans, they never intend to answer anyway. They wanted to make a do stop obsessing over the past message but it’s not cute. They just wasted everyone’s time with that. Absolutely hate it. And that is just one of the problems I have with that comic and why I dislike it.

I like that it's the most reasonable explanation for why Knuckles can speak, is aware of his ancestor's culture, and can fight, all the while giving him a solemn yet tragic backstory. That they never want to fully explain everything is just dumb, and a disservice to their fans.
One of the big changes I was going to make was the plot of Sonic Heroes. Metal would still be pretending to be Eggman, but his real goal would be to merge with the time stones to become a "god," ruling over time and space. A big plot point would be Knuckles using the master Emerald to nullify their effect, allowing Sonic and others to take out Metal. The feedback would be too much and destroy the ME, chaos emeralds and time stones, and to divert the energy Knuckles and the ghost of Tikal would perform an act of chaos control, pulling the Echidnas moments before their deaths at the hands of Chaos into the present.

I can't really think of many franchises with a main character that has a big cast of other characters that have been given a lot of focus. And yet we expect those other characters to get some attention every once in a while. As always, I first look to Mario. Luigi has his own series and gets special focus from time to time. This board is series specific and generates a lot more posts, so it is unavoidable that the same things will be brought up repeatedly. For example with reaction images. So there's no reason to keep the limit, now that the board engine can handle multiple images properly.
