Since we've covered around 1,000 Sonic fancomics on our Ride™, I think it's time for a dedicated thread for comics that are heavily Sonic-inspired and/or done by authors we've already storytimed.
Today we're starting with Shattered Current, by Serpenric Art. We recently covered their comic Sonic Unlimited here: >>17504
From the artist: >Shattered Current is a story influenced by Capepunk fiction, set in a world with anthropomorphic characters. >Those who were born with powers were treated different by the general public. Supers were often met with caution, and in more extreme circumstances, hostility - driven by fear. >It's the year 2xxx AC (After Cataclysm), and things have gotten worse since then. Two antiheroes step up to shake the status quo. A goat with shocking abilities and his partner, a mechanic beaver girl who may have a few screws loose.
>>18019 And that's it for issue 1! The last page came out on February 16, so hopefully it'll continue. For now, I'll post some art from their instagram https://www.instagram.com/serpentric_art/
Welcome to another Sonic-adjacent storytime! We've covered a few Sonic-adjacent comics from Archie alumni before, such as Sylvanna >>>/co/446269 and this time we're doing Drogune, a webcomic written by Ian Flynn and drawn by Adam Bryce Thomas.
https://drogune.com/
From their website: >Drogune is a science-fantasy epic. We follow Wynd Tevan, the last of the drogune, as she lives on the fringes of society while staying one step ahead of the forces of Galaxant.
>The drogune were said to be gods, the creators of the Six Realms, and the founders of Galaxant; crowning the Forever King themselves. What can Wynd do when her heritage, her very existence, has been co-opted by her oppressors?
>Everything changes for Wynd and the crew of Fortune’s Lap when they find an unhatched drogune egg – and are subsequently hunted down by one of the elite Knights of Galaxant!
>Drogune is planned as a graphic novel series, but there’s dreams of expanding that scope as we try to touch upon all the facets of this wild, wonderful universe we’ve created.
>Since 2016 we’ve been cultivating a story of action and adventure; of hope and faith. What defines us? Is it our birth, our heritage, our society, or what we do in the face of adversity? How far will one go to get what they want, or to do what’s right?
>Welcome to Drogune. Our space ships run on magic. Our god is the underdog. Our people are varied as the realms they call home. Join us as we explore all this universe has to offer, won’t you?
>>18524 So they use these warp gates to go between the realms because it's far safer than going directly through the ether I'm pretty sure it should be aether here, as in luminous aether
>>18532 I do like how the words have been crossed out so we get the official and actual account of things. I don't think it should be in the middle of the issue though, seems like it'd be better as a sidestory thing
>>18540 Oh ABT, you really are the best >>18539 Yeah, they've got a good story here, but don't seem confident enough that the readers will pick up all the nuance and end up going over things several times. It's a shame, since that's what ends up bogging the story down
>>18551 More fighting >>18550 Yeah, you can tell he's having fun playing with proportions in this comic. Must be a nice change from Sonic, where almost everyone fits into 2-3 bodytypes
>>18563 And that's it for now! I'll do the other Drogune comic next week. Their website's still updating, with new fanart last month so there's a good chance we'll get more at some point. They did say they're hoping to release book 1 in Spring of this year (i.e., around now)
And we're back with another issue of Ian Flynn and Adam Bryce Thomas' Drogune! This one's a spinoff written for the Shonen Jump 100th Anniversary contest.
From the authors: >Ambru is a mysterious young man on the run from the terrifying Inquisitors. Can he escape with the help of the free-spirited Eko?
>Originally created for the Shonen Jump 100th Anniversary contest, this manga-styled adventure takes places in the DROGUNE universe.
>Written by Ian Flynn >Art, Design & Lettering by Adam Bryce Thomas
Oh, and in case anyone's wondering how I got the images looking nice despite the pdf having lots of crunchy jpeg compression, without further ado...
TP's instructions for extracting pretty compression artifact-free pngs of manga-style pdfs: > 1. extract pages at original resolution pdfimages -png Drogune-Outlaw-hiwa9m.pdf > 2. use cunet anime with a noise value of 3 to remove jpeg compression artefacts, saving as jpegs with quality set to 100 Used the GUI version of waifu2x for this, so no command line arguments ;_; > 3. convert these jpegs to pngs mogrify -format png *.jpg > 4. convert black and white images to the grayscale colorspace to reduce filesize. Ignore any pages with color here! mkdir grayscale mogrify -path grayscale -colorspace Gray *.png > 5. optimize the pngs by selecting a better compression algorithm optipng -o5 *.png Yes, I'm posting these instructions so I remember what to do with the next pdf we need to convert
>>18757 Pretty rude for a walking grandfather clock >>18756 His pencils have always been fantastic and he's done a great job adapting to the manga aesthetic where they get to shine through more
>>18763 Well he was warned! >>18762 Yeah, I like them too. They've got that cool swords & sorcery + scifi aesthetic without going full Star Wars. It's a shame they're not used more often
>>18774 And we'll end with a pronunciation guide! Oh, and there were lots of entries into that competition, which (you) can check out here: https://medibang.com/contest/jumptezuka100th/entry/ >>18773 I'm still pissed they were barely in Worlds Unite, clearly Flynn and ABT were too!
>>18775 Patrician taste! I think a lot of the issue is people (particularly guys) aren't comfortable with a non-straight label, but something like 40-50% of men admit to at the very least kissing other men. Actually, now that I think of it, I don't think any straight person I know has ever explicitly identified as heterosexual. It's always "I like *opposite sex*" or I'm dating/have a crush on *opposite sex person*" >>18777 It really was ;_; >>18778 You're very welcome!
