Mimic had to die the same day all the major youtube uploads of the Ultra series did to....was gonna rewatch and catch up on Return of Ultraman/Ultraman Jack.
>>19681 Naw, we all did. If anything, we were all rooting for him to kill off Whisper so we'd never have to see her cry again and something would actually happen in IDW Sonic.
>>19685 it's alright, even being my fave of the IDW characters didn't protect him from their biggest faults with new characters or anything regarding how they execute villains and arcs.
>>19801 Sally was the trendsetter for equality in mobian minimal clothing. >>19804 They seemed to lighten up after the corruption left and Chaos was there for emotional support.
Every time that Rich gets himself into trouble, I legit feel EMBARRASSED that I got myself all bent out of shape over this man because he keeps doing this to himself and while I feel sorry for him on some human level, frankly, he can go fuck himself.

>Mimic's dead Well shit. I guess he should have been more genre savvy and disguised himself as a crying lesbian instead. Of course, now that the comic needs a new shapeshifting henchman, may I make a suggestion? >>19680 B-but he doesn't have a mouth >>19684 They'd honestly make a fantastic toxic couple, second only to Max and Locke >>19685 lmao >>19693 >And to think, there’s 20 more pages for this issue! Even the page count's going full Mecha Madness! For completeness, we better be getting a Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters back up story! >>19699 Nice! >>19800 lmao >>19801 Counterpoint: Lien-Da >>19803 I wish the new Sonic manga was doing SatBK instead of some random human with a sword >>19808 He's the gift that keeps on giving! I honestly don't feel sorry for him since this fandom's given him way more chances than he deserves and still keeps doing the same thing >>19809 You could almost say he's acting like a giant baby about it 😏 >>19811 lmao is that a giant mechanaut?
Image:175120564806.jpg(364kB, 1536x2048)Penders' crimes against font kerning.jpg
Oh and sorry I've not been around as much, work's been extra busy
On a more important note, let's look at Penders' latest crime against humanity: poor font kerning! The spacing between these letters is seriously driving me nuts: >DA VE MANAK >ART MA WHINNE Y >PA T SP A<IANTE Pure madness!
>>19818 Oh I didn't order it, although I was tempted, this is just off of Penders' twitter. By all accounts they did a good job of printing it, but the recoloring of old issues just rubs me the wrong way
>>19816 >For completeness, we better be getting a Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters back up story! Time to see who's really behind this post! It's old man Gallagher!
>>19820 And I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for you meddling anons, and your mangey Konductor! >>19821 Why do I know so much about these fictional Echidna? Send help! Some notes: Athair's now in the correct spot as Knuckles' great grandfather. Janelle-Le (the first female guardian) was depicted as several different colors, but IIRC never pink until flynn wrote her. Most would think that Sojourner's supposed to be after Janelle-Le, but instead has been switched with the sexy purple Thunderhawk. This is actually the correct order. From the letters page of KtE#21, it was initially (from oldest to youngest) Specter, Sojourner, then Thunderhawk but the infamous family tree has it Spectre, Thunderhawk THEN Sojourner. The letters page of StH#193 switched it back and that's the order Flynn used in the encyclopedia. Spectre's next, and is correct in terms of hair color, although we never see him without his helmet in the comic. Tobor's also correct, no notes. Hawking's more or less correct, although it's a missed opportunity to not have gross almost-dead Hawking here. Matthias is also correct. Fun fact: he's the guardian we know least about. Next up is Jordan and Aaron, the only instance where we have a pair of brothers as guardians. Aaron died young, which is why the Brotherhood started the whole "traumatize your kid by walking into a fake wall of fire and let him fend for himself in the wilderness" thing. Rembrandt's up next, and is also correct. Fun fact: he's the one that came up with the name "the Brotherhood of Guardians". Harlan's correct as well, and again we know very little about this one. Geordi La Forge from Star Trek aka Moonwatcher's next, and is also correct. Fun fact: he and Harlan wanted to have all Guardians involved with the training of the next generation, instead of tossing them out into the wilderness. Sadly they were outvoted. Steppenwolf's one of my favorites, and was the first to actually be trained as a Guardian so is actually good at his job unlike super nerd Edmund. Steppenwolf's the one with the Batman-esque origin and is the one that banished the Dark Legion to the Twilight Zone because they liked playing Sega Genesis too much.
>>19822 Decided to read it and oh boy do I have notes!
>In IDW, Sonic is treated a lot like an uplifting figure, someone who’s always looking to help others. That’s cuz Ian Flynn sees Sonic as an hero and actually plays Sonic games. Ken Penders however, sees Sonic as overly competitive and angsty. Cuz that’s his idea of a teen. Flynn genuinely does not play the games, but neither did Penders, or Pontac and Graff, or the people that wrote the Boom cartoon, or the movies. You can 100% write a videogame character well without playing their games. Flynn gets several things about the games wrong in the Encyclo-speed-ia, likely due to looking up fan wikis. He also doesn't attend the Bumblecast videos where they're paid to play Sonic games, but does play the non-Sonic game ones. Sonic is canonically recalcitrant and overly competitive hero in every incarnation and this is something both Penders and Flynn get right. Where they both diverge from the game canon is having him be rude and dismissive of Tails
>You know all those scenes of Sonic bonding with his buddies over small talk and playful banter between friends? >Yeah that’s gonna be replaced by Sonic acting a dick to anyone that looks at him weird, banter replaced with overly drawn out exposition, and lame jokes. Sonic canonically mirrors the people he encounters, so he's always rude to Eggman, and competitive and violent to Knuckles, Shadow and Jet until they end up in the friends/friendly-rivals zone. Also, lame jokes are a core staple of the Sonic franchise, and both Flynn and Penders absolutely love overly drawn out exposition
>Penders is very evidently not as big a fan of Sonic as Flynn, any reference dialogue will be gone. >HOWEVER, that will be replaced by the most abhorrently awful attempts at trying to sound “hip” because Penders liked Old Luke Cage comics….. >ya know, the racially insensitive ones. I'm going full Penders defense force on this one, because those regurgitated song lyrics are fucking annoying and one of the worst quirks of Flynn's writing. Penders is an out of touch boomer given a drawing of a crocodile with a walkman and a description saying he's cool, of course he's gonna make him "hip". Also, those old Luke Cage comics are kino. They may be considered tonedeaf to modern audiences, but they have a black guy as the main character who despite ostensibly being in the hero business for the money, always ends up helping those in need
>In this hypothetical universe where Penders was actually allowed to still work on Sonic comics, I feel like MAYBE it would get to his head that focusing on Knuckles so much again would probably not work out >So here’s a funny idea, what if he started becoming obsessed with SHADOW? Yeah, Penders would definitely focus on Shadow. Like Knuckles, he's the cool new Sonic rival with lots of room to explore his past
>See the reason Ken Penders liked Knuckles over Sonic was because aside from just the former allowing for more creative freedom, he found Knuckles’ isolated status and heritage ripe for his passion project of writing a story about an animal geopolitical soap opera. >And I think knowing Penders’ surface level reading comprehension, he would probably see Shadow as a perfect replacement that could fill a similar role. >Shadow has alien heritage, is isolated from the rest of the group most of the time, and SEGA had less eyes on him during 2018. Agreed, although I'll add that Shadow was one of Flynn's favorite characters to write in Archie, but hates writing for him in IDW because Sega disagrees with his characterization of him. It's a big part of the mandates discussion
>Ken Penders injected A LOT of blatant Moses imagery and religious babble in his stories as well as “borrowing” ideas from superhero comics for his Knuckles lore. Ex. Superman, Black Panther, etc. so he would probably apply a similar method to Shadow. It wasn't just Moses! There's a lot of biblical references in Penders' work despite him not being religious.
>Ken Penders would probably look at the scene of Shadow being shown imprisoned in the future by Mephiles during 06? Well Ken Penders would probably beat that image into her head at every opportunity he could so that he could portray Shadow as a Jesus allegory allah Zack Snyder. lmao Penders already did this with Knuckles! Knuckles is literally the miracle-performing and prophecy-fulfilling savior of Mobius, who died for their sins before being resurrected.
>Hell given Penders’ obsession with Marvel, I wouldn’t be surprised if he straight up turned Shadow and Black Doom into Silver Surfer and Galactus. >Not in terms of character but in the idea that Shadow was once like a semi-disciple of Black Doom for a short time but-became a full-blown hero. >The restoration will still existc it’s not like Penders hated the Freedom Fighters but I feel like Penders never cared for Amy and also because Penders ya know he doesn’t do the whole “Women in power” thing (Cuz he cannot write a woman to save his life- Penders would be drawing from Star Trek to fill in the Doom stuff if anything. Also, Sega's few notes on Amy was that she's a Sonic-obsessed ultra-fan who's convinced herself she's Sonic's girlfriend. I'd also like to point out that Penders did a genuinely good job of writing Julie-Su and only fucked up writing Sally when his pet Geoffrey was around
>SO, I feel like he might try and make Tails the leader. He would probably make a few lame jokes about a kid being the leader of a government agency. OR alternatively if he just wanted to write a Sally clone, he would probably vandalize Whipser’s character to fit that role. Tails as a leader would be interesting, but Flynn and co literally did that with Lanolin! Also, Whisper has no personality to vandalize
>Oh also speaking of Whisper, I actually do think Penders WOULD see as a perfect replacement for Sally. >And if you didn’t like Whisper’s soft-spoken, capable, timid, personality. >You’re not gonna like the trophy-wife/generic action lady way Penders is gonna write her as. Don't tempt me with a good time because that sounds way better than current Whisper
>Oh also, Tangle and Whisper will have no chemistry and Penders will probably lean into Silver being her main interest. >Not because he’s homophobic or anything but do you actually think Penders has the balls to put any gay subtext into his writing? >Intentionally? I mean, they don't have any chemistry anyway amirite? Also Whisper x Silver is cute. Penders is an incompetent writer, but he is an ambitious one. He did make Rotor gay, and looking back you can see what he was trying to do, even if it was so bland that even an Archie-obsessed homo didn't pick up on it. FWIW, he does make the relationship between not-Rotor and not-Cobar explicit in TLSC. I'll also say that Flynn and Penders are both excellent at (unintentionally) adding gay subtext to Sonic and Knuckles
>>19832 >Speaking of Silver, it’s hard to dictate how Penders would write Silver as he’s never worked with the character before but we can assume maybe he glossed over a few wikis and would write him as either an overly highly capable cold badass unlike in IDW or just a one note dick. Silver is canonically a highly capable cold badass AND a one note dick, so that'd be a genuine improvement from uwu-ver
>a lot of people don’t care for the way Flynn’s Sonic tends to monologue or show such prowise over his achievements and his own hopeful demeanor. >And I can see why, but if hypothetically: it was even worse. >What if, it was even MORE tacky? >MORE, self indulgent? >Here comes Penders! That's literally how Kirby wrote Marvel comics so that's intentional on Penders' part. Also, it's one of the many writing habits Flynn picked up from Penders
>And he will also instead of spacing out each character’s introduction between individual issues, he’ll just dump them all into one issue, and you have to follow each one spouting their own backgrounds, hopes, dreams, quirks, etc in the most unnatural and painstakingly long way! As apposed to the stretching of single-issue plots across four issues IDW is lousy with? Not defending Penders here because he's just as guilty of this
>You may not be able to understand what they’re saying, and that’s because you don’t speak Penders-ese, so lemme explain, *ahem* >“NOTICE MT WRITING, NOTICE MY MESSAGING. I KNOW THERE’S A CHARACTER AND A STORY YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO CARE ABOUT, BUT LISTEN TO HOW PROFOUND I SOUND” Again, this bombastic style is classic Kirby, and while I don't really care for it, I can see why Penders did.
>Also any scene of the bad guys that tried to build up tension, intensity, and conflict between the characters will be directly spelt out to you either by text boxes, the dialogue itself, or by other characters in the background. >Also subtly be damned, no room for fan theorizing. lmao, they're both guilty of this!
>Unlike the regular IDW comics which aside from the Metal Virus tend to focus on more lighthearted, albeit kinda annoyingly low stakes escapades. >EVERY arc in the Penders IDW comics, will be like a war storm like the Metal Virus arc except gorier and having even less of a point. I mean, I wouldn't mind fewer annoyingly low stakes escapades in IDW...
>Oh also because unlike Flynn and Stanley, Penders is WAY more trigger happy with killing characters. >You may think this would be upgrade as it adds consequences to the story, but it isn’t. >Because they’ll only ever be in a few issues where they barely do shit and then leave. Penders mostly killed off minor characters in a book with a frankly bloated cast, Flynn and co kill off some of their most interesting characters when there's way more interesting stories they could tell with them. I want more Starline! I want more Mimic! Also, let's not forget that one of the first jobs Flynn was tasked with in Archie was to massively prune down the cast cont...
>>19833 >Sorry Jewel, sorry Rough and Tumble, you guys are not long for this world….. I honestly think Penders would like writing Rough and Tumble
>You know how Flynn at least tries to have Tails go through character arcs and develop slowly over the course of the story? >Ken Penders will in one issue write Tails like a wimp, then write Tails as a military officer, the write him as a conflicting monster, and the comic will- >act like he’s ALWAYS been a badass. Despite that never being established and borderline contradicted at many previous times during the story. Characters can be more than one thing! Also, they're both terrible at writing Tails
>Not that IDW doesn’t have some contradictions itself but instead of it just being because of constantly changing writers, it would be because Penders has the memory of a senile grandpa. It's literally the editor's job to ensure that there aren't contradictions between the plots of various writers
>I have a feeling Ken Penders wouldn’t give up on Knuckles entirely, after all he is his bread and butter. >While the Echidna stuff won’t exist obviously I have a feeling that given that there are other inhabitants on Angel Island. >Penders would make Knuckles way less laidback Knuckles isn't laid back at all in IDW!
>He would have Knuckles always either training for higher strength like a muscle head, keeping out unwanted inhabitants off the island if they even step on a twig, or just have him brood in the sky. >Think Black Adam, except utterly sauceless. >Like Dwayne Johnson Black Adam. Knuckles has always been kind to the inhabitants of the island and violent towards outsiders, and frankly Flynn has him brooding way too much
>Because Penders for some reason just hates writing Knuckles with the rest of the gang he will still be just as isolated from most stories like in Archie, however because Julie-Su doesn’t exist he can’t fall back on her to be Knuckles’ doting housewife. That was an editorial decision so that Penders and Bollers wouldn't contradict things. A proper editor would have been more directly involved
>THAT’S WHERE ROUGE COMES IN. >Yeah I’d imagine Penders would write Rouge way more femme fatale and way more touchy-touchy with people to get her way, but because Penders would probably make her the main love interest for Knuckles….. >Okay how do I explain this? Touchy-touchy femme fatale Rouge is kino and she and Knuckles have excellent chemistry (it's no Sonknux, but it's still very good)
>You know how a lot of fanfic writers and will write Catwoman and or Black Cat as overly clingy, unrealistically infatuated, and completely in-self sufficient if Bruce or Peter aren’t looking at them 24/7? >That’s how Penders is gonna write Knux and Rouge. >Be afraid. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a hyper-competent, intelligent, and flirty person like Catwoman wanting fuck a hyper-competent stoic grouch like Batman. It's what makes their relationship fun, and Knuxrouge and Sonknux are fun for exactly the same reasons
>Also the comic will promise you over, and over, and over, AND OVER again that everything that happens is for a reason. >You can decide who you are! >Except if faith says otherwise. >Everything has a reason! >Except when it doesn’t because the editor wanted this plotline to end. Again, this long-form plots that never receive a satisfying payoff are absolutely endemic to IDW
>>19834 TLDR: Penders is an incompetent but ambitious writer, and Flynn has picked up a lot of his bad habits >>19828 Wouldn't be a proper Surge comic without her getting btfo! >>19829 Yeah, the guy's def got an axe to grind >Cringe Looks like they removed it from the word filter ;_;
