I was going to storytime Gerald's journal this weekend, but the note to Tower is written by someone close enough to the Robotniks to refer to Gerald on a first-name basis and to be in lawful possession of the journal after it was recovered from Eggman's base. It's also written in the style of an emotionally mature, non-egotistical and intelligent woman (as apposed to Eggman, who writes like an intelligent self-centered child). Another interesting thing is the writer of the note doesn't seem to have any sort of personal relationship to Eggman, referring to him as Dr. Eggman. Here's the note for those interested:

It's a lot of reasons really. I'm genuinely a fan of Sonic Underground, particularly its retro-scifi aesthetic and sense of progression (there's much more focus on continuity and progression than SatAM). Not to mention best boys Sleet and Dingo!
I've been a fan of Tamers ever since I caught this video around 8 years ago: Sonic the Hedgehog watches his lover, Bartleby dunk some balls.
I liked the unrepentant enthusiasm for the ship and the unique artstyle of pasting MS Paint drawings over stock photo backgrounds and had to see more. After watching the more episodic Sonic the Hedgehog - Great Cereal Crisis I was hooked. The comfy slice of life drama paired with over the top anime fights and early 00s Internet humor is extremely compelling and I think a lot of people just get filtered by the fart jokes and TTS voices.

I also like that despite the often bizarre and violent world the characters live in, the relationships are all written with care and a sense of realism that's genuinely better than anything you'll find in mainstream media. Knuckles and Sonia's relationship is extremely cute, but has a lot of ups and downs, with a common thread of them both trying to work out the sort of people they want to be, which causes them to drift apart as much as it draws them closer together. Aleena is a woman plagued with guilt and regret, having gone from Queen of Mobius to working class suburban mom trying to raise 3 strangers that are almost adults, all without the man she loves more than anything.

Sleet and Dingo are obviously my favorites. Mainstream media is terrified of showing anything but happy out and proud gays that never face any real discrimination and are essentially perfect. Sleet and Dingo constantly bicker and even betray each other despite loving each other dearly. They've been together for a long time, but until recently Sleet was still in the closet so they would fight whenever Dingo publicly expressed affection. This out x closeted relationship would've been resolved with Sleet coming out at the end of the episode if it was a mainstream show, but that's just not how real life works. Spoilers for how it was resolved: Sleet was in the closet for so long because he was almost murdered and gang raped when Dingo outed him in high school. Dingo did save him, but he never really got over it. It wasn't until he'd seen Sonic and Bartleby be affectionate in public, had a talk with Sonic about it, and had to defend Dingo's life that he was able to feel comfortable with himself. Importantly, he never actually makes a big public declaration that he's gay, just that Dingo is his and that he'll keep him safe

Also, Tamers doesn't hate Sonic. He hates modern Sonic. He's fine with the classic games, AoStH and SatAM, but doesn't bother with them since it's time that could be spent watching Sonic Underground

He was supposed to have his debut game in 07 but after 06 bombed it obviously got cancelled. Blaze's gameplay is suspiciously better working than Sonic's in 06 so she was likely going to be a playable character along with Silver. That's an absolutely perfect description of Metal. Sonic never tries to be cool, he's just a guy that loves adventure so his coolness is unintentional and effortless. Metal's so preoccupied with trying to be Sonic but cooler he's completely oblivious to everything else and keeps making the dumbest mistakes. In CD he copies Sonic's cool poses and spends the entire race showing off his own cool moves only to get trash compacted at the end because Sonic just focused on the race. In Heroes he tries to beat Sonic at friendship by copying the abilities of Sonic's friends, only for Sonic to share his super transformation with his friends and them to beat up Metal as a team.
Metal only has himself to blame for being such an absolute joke and that's why he's one of my favorite characters

Honestly, the past 14 years of media have really changed my opinion on fanfiction. I used to hate fanfic, but after seeing IDW Sonic, the MCU, the DCEU, the Star Wars sequels, all the shitty sequels to 80s franchises, the Hobbit trilogy, and so on I really can't honestly say that fanfic writers are any worse than the professionals are. Honestly any character can be compelling in the hands of the right writer and we certainly didn't get that for Silver. He's got Sonic's act first, think never attitude but without his emotional intelligence, Knuckles' stubbornness and gullibility but without his sense of duty and specialist knowledge, and Shadow's cool powers and tragic backstory but without his own Maria o center him. All this along with his zesty personality should make him a very unpredictable and versatile character, but they just do nothing with it. Even something as simple as him being a psychic that's as dumb as a bag of rocks could lead to some interesting stories

Even Silver's future is barely touched on outside of 06. We know it's terrible in Rivals, but peaceful in all the other games. I agree about Blaze though. We need a 3d game where she's a major character so we can finally see more of her world. Prime would have been a great place to explore it. I'm still mad they didn't just treat it as a love letter to the wider franchise and have Sonic and friends visit a different continuity for a few episodes Sliders-style and give the fans a satisfying conclusion to the ova, SatAM, X, Boom and Underground.

Tron Uprising was surprisingly good, highly recommend. There's like a dozen VAs in it that I absolutely love. It's even got Frodo and 7 of 9 from Star Trek! I'm looking forward to Tron Ares. It's got Jared Leto (aka best Joker), Evan Peters (best boy from American Horror Story) and Gillian Anderson (from the X-files)

To be fair, SoJ did want them to work more closely with Sonic Team, and they're the masters of that! Sonadow Generations is absolute trash and I'm still mad about it. Even the music's a downgrade. It's literally the only Sonic game I CBF finishing, and I've completed 06 and Rise of Lyric!

I've been a fan of fanfics since I was a kid, mostly because it was the only place I could see same-sex romance. It's a shame it gets such a bad reputation, since a lot of it's genuinely better written than most mainstream media. 100% agree on recent media. The Hobbit and LotR are some of my favorite books, and was so relieved the LotR films turned out so great but the Hobbit was just terrible and pointlessly stretched out. Same with Star Wars. I'm a prequels apologist and I just found the sequel films overproduced and boring. I hear the shows and comics are pretty good though, and I did love Star Wars Visions.

lmao I'm glad someone enjoys reading them! I actually skipped the Sonic/Classic Sonic parts since I've already played them and would just get mad at the dialog changes. I did find it funny they were so bad at making the changes it's now canon Knuckles is angry at Sonic for eating his island though

As for the Shadow part, I found the soundtrack remixes genuinely terrible. I can forgive a lot of things in a Sonic game (buggy gameplay, short/boring levels, bizarre overcorrections to appease non-fans, a lack of Sonic and Knuckles kissing) but Sonic games are supposed to have excellent music. A lot of these tracks had been remixed before (the Biolizard fight music sounds great in 3DS Generations, as do the remixes in the Shadow DLC for Forces) so they had no excuse. I'm not a music expert, but the tracks just sounded off, or had really weird style choices. That wistful and melancholy piano track from Frontiers getting sped up and dubstepped was a crime. Also, they removed Right There, Ride On ;_;

The levels were fine, but nowhere near the expansiveness and ambition of the original Generations levels. Generations had the best level design of any boost game by far and we didn't get that here. They remade dozens of levels from 3d Sonic games in Frontiers so it's not like they're out of practice

Gameplay was a huge letdown for me. They have the code for the combat-oriented Frontiers-style gameplay and yet we're back to Forces/Generations physics inside the levels again. They did let Shadow use the Forces gameplaay in the hub world but his combat's far worse than Frontiers!Sonic. It was genuinely more fun to play as Shadow in 06!

What disappointed me most was the Alex Mercer Doom™ Powers™. Shadow doesn't need wings, he's already got rocket boots and the ability to teleport, and he doesn't need to turn into a tentacle monster, there's plenty of smut about that already (seriously, there's at least 3 high quality doujins/fan comics about that). The real reason they're doing this is classic Sonic Team overcorrection

StH got criticized for having poor vehicle controls, and while they were fine in 06, the game was a flop so they're afraid to touch on those gameplay elements. They've tried to smuggle the vehicle sections back in with the doom powers, but ironically the controls for them are absolutely terrible. I actually gave up on the game when you have to fly up to the big floating eyeball in the hub world because the controls were such unintuitive dogshit

The whole premise of the plot was misguided imo. I get that Generations is a game that looks back on previous events in the franchise, but to go with the most predictable "Doom's back and trying to control Shadow again while shadow broods over Muh-Ria" was lame. At least switch things up and have Shadow pull Gerald and Maria into the present. Cause some actual change to the status quo! I did at least like the part where Rouge and Shadow switch out Sonic's emerald

I'm also not happy they shrank Rouge's breasts and covered up more of her cleavage. I may not be into the ladies, but she's one of my favorite characters. I love her confident femme fatale vibe and think it sends the wrong message that a person can't be both competent and sexy. Also, they covered up her back so now her wings clip through her clothes, which is such a rookie design mistake

They're the superior choice! Comics are supposed to be fun (take notes IDW!) and a guaranteed way to inject a sense of fun into the story is for the villains to have an absolute blast being degenerate gremlins. Having Kit, Maw and Kragok being the straight man to the more exuberant Surge, Starline and Lien-Da really helps make them shine I do hope Regina shows up sometime

At the very least, getting a lot of fanworks means people like the premise or the characters from whatever they're making a fanwork of.
Just looking at ao3, there are 2252 Sonic IDW fics with 644 and 633 being Whisper and Tangle respectively, 368 being Surge. Searching by other and genre tags gets us around 586 total works in the hurt/comfort/angst triangle with 200~ of them being Whisper, 190~ of those works being Tangle, and around 100~ of them being Surge.
There are 313, Canon Divergence or more story focused fics, with 118 of them having Whisper, 107 of them being Tangle, and 102 of them having Surge in them.
Surge being less popular isn't surprising, she came out in the third year of publication and Imposter Syndrome led into the fourth year of publication. Whisper and Tangle being more popular for their uwu lesbians thing isn't surprising, even if Whisper does just bring Tangle down. That's kind of just what happens to lesbian couples in male dominated franchises
But Surge seems to be pretty popular for more story based fics, about a third of all fics with Surge in them are story based and a third of all story based fics involve Surge despite her being half as popular as the next two IDW characters individually.
Although none of that is really surprising.

That X user has a point, but it's more of a symptom of a bigger issue with tone and how violence is portrayed in different genres. Sonic, especially in the games is very shounen.
So attempted acts of murder are brushed off rather easily, especially if a person looks like they're going to try better moving forward. Just look at all of Sonic's friends, they've all tried to kill him except for Tails, and Eggman in SA2s ending.
I think no matter what it needs to be not swept under the rug and have them just all forgive each other, Lanolin needs to change in response to this or it's just a nothing burger of a plot. Honestly I think about any direction could be good as long as it's written competently and Lanolin struggles.

Honestly he's the only one who won, it's in his best interest that the Restoration and Clutch wipe each other out and working with him was dumb in the first place. Sonic just got luckily this didn't backfire more and both Lanolin and Surge would be justified in being mad at him, especially Surge since the same Sonic who talked down to her is just being buddy-buddy with Eggman.
Although really this is Clutch's fault for being an idiot, and also a bit of Surge's and Kit's for not slapping his idiotic plan down when they first met him.

The Hobbit is literally my favorite ever fantasy book, and the movies are some of the worst I've seen in theaters. The third one in particular is basically just one long CGI fight scene. It's excruciating.

I've thought about trying to watch the shows, but it's just hard for me to care about what happens now that Luke and Han and the OT cast are dead. I never thought that any of the other Star Wars media had a set of main characters as compelling as Luke, Han, and Leia.
