Might be more intresting to have multiple different "paths" based on where you recruited them/drone type

Standard worker
>recruited from factories
>upgrades down swordsman, gunner, or specialist(utility skills) paths
>top tier = 1/10th the cost to maintain of units "on its level," but only mid-tier quality
>great for sieges/fodder

Scrap worker
>recruited from pirates or constructed yourself(with the right skillset)
>upgrades paths: self-modded(i.e. Alice/Beau), tribal, mech/vehicle pilot
>unique morale/culture mechanic: fight 2/3 times harder for "kin" (including extra HP + combat speed)
>raising culture: making scrap drones yourself, talking to them out of battle, raiding "surface slickers"
>lowering culture: ignoring their concerns, joining a larger faction, disbanding/scrapping units, majority non-scrapper army
>

ZDs/Reclaimed Drones
>salvaged from battlefields/junkyards(requires the repair skill)
>MASSIVE morale(they trust you), much better combat AI than even scrapper WDs
>occasionally ignore orders
>occasionally possesed
>upgrade paths: mutant, humanlike(best stats of any WD variant), servant(ends with the ZD joining you as a full on companion/character, able to be assigned armies/skills of its own)
>tiny chance(1/20) that a servant-type becomes a witch once they reach full character status

Freeborn Workers
>extremely rare, only recruitable from lost colonies(and as a rare spawn on Federation worlds)
>directly better versions of standard WD upgrade line(i.e. top tier Gunner uses Uzi's weaponry), but MUCH higher maintenance/pay costs
>lose too many and they'll refuse to join ever again(word travels)

SD-Worker
>recruited from Federation and Rebel war-factories
>mindless canon fodder
>on par with mid-level worker gunners from the start
>upgrades are mostly sidegrades: Dinos, Intoners, and Grunts(most cost-effective head-on infantry you can recruit)

SD-Sentinel
>recruited directly from special Federation bases
>no bypass
>can upgrade to Spider(heavy weapons), Medusa(better stun/tunneling), and Married(all around superior-to-baseline) variants
>can ALSO convert captured DDs into SDs at these bases
>these variants have a mage, bezerker(if male), hunter(if female) set of upgrades instead
>can occasionally go-red in battle, turning against all forces present


And then of course the various humans and their variants... how do you think the ships should be represented? As combatants? Orbital support? The same way those Mount and Blade ship combat mods worked(complete with boarding actions and ship/ship combat)? Something that needs considering given those will be the majority of how you move supplies/troops/yourself even on-planet.

Humans would be the most diverse and costly units to field woth pros and cons based off of which faction you recruit them from

Your average starship trooper, they have guns and some armor but they aren't the best
They serve as morale boosters for any sentinel drone you have in your army
The recruits can specialize into different weapons types, like heavy weapon soldiers or explosive experts.
Human heros should be leveled towards maintaining low wages, food consumption and for morale bonuses all around.
Technicians are heros that are specialized in engineering, tactics and scouting, acting as your siege masters and drone doctors.
I don't know much about the BOXON and other human factions because i don't want to look into them because I'm lazy

Fielding an all human or all drone army is doable but it's best to have a mix of the two so you don't get stomped by the AI carting out a doomstack at the worst time
