King is very likely to be an improvement since last year had several problems behind it. Really obvious winner (love him or not), a lot of hype campaigns dying even faster than usual, a lot of anti-climatic match-ups happening, etc.

Queen will have to see. Could really go either way, but it has a very solid track record overall.

They consistently qualify for King, so I imagine they'll get in again this year, even after the release of L*mbus, the issue is that neither has made it past round 1 outside of Ayin's run in Heroes, so I hope at least one of them can do decently this year. /co/ didn't exactly experience a dastric change in activty and voting trends this year (campaign-centric characters and classic heavy hitters did much better than usual in Ms. /co/, but this can easily be attributed to the email verification and anti-rigging measures), so I'm not expecting Queen and King to deviate significantly from last time.
One thing for sure - and this is a no-brainer for anyone who followed the thread discussion during Mr. /co/, expect some drama and meta discussion in regards to previous year's winners to take place. I'd disagree Geno is ONLY popular because of Smash. Even if it did inflate his popularity, he's always seemed to be one of the breakout characters from that game above Mallow. He's a mechanical marvel with a cool design, and sometimes that alone can do a lot of carrying. At minimum, I'd certainly say it's the case in the West. He was also boosted by general 2000s internet presence, which is a whole part of why he even got big in terms of Smash requests around Brawl times.

That all said, I do think his personality is his biggest fault, and by extension his biggest challenge by far in King of /v/. Even Mario, who has to struggle with his plain bread stigma, has years of personality and material to pull off both official and unofficial. Geno is a star officer who's pretty straight to the point, and even fans don't deviate much off that. His best hope would be the remake giving him some more moments to shine, and while the cutscenes might do that to an extent I can't see that much different over the original game.

I didn't say "ONLY popular", I said "SO popular". I know he was well liked because he was "so cool", but him not being in Smash made him stay in people's minds forever, and is probably known to some that have not played Super Mario RPG. He is THE SMRPG character, and that's unfortunate.
But yeah, his lacking personality is the main problem with him. I don't think he would be interesting to have in the tournament, he feels like Round 1/2 fodder. I would much prefer someone like Mallow or Smithy to qualify instead.

Battler lost to Chris Robin just as the tournament was picking up heat. Robin was essentially a whitelisted character who only got his camp going in R2 when he had the prospect of meeting Battler.
Cue clash of memes that imploded the whole round. The tournament basically climaxed too early and too many good picks lost.

PSO2 was a good game, NGS really is not. There's no real characters I like or could or would do stuff for, the game is basically just a dress-up game. Despite me playing it literally every fucking day, it's not a game that I would recommend.

I think there's also the point that in resent years /v/ has grown to hate the Doomguy because of the Nu Doom games
He went from being a average space marine to a god killing, indestructible force of nature that has demons living in fear

He technically breaks code, but if we ARE having a whitelist then I feel he's absolutely one of the best uses of it you could get. The Angry Video Game Nerd is a cornerstone of internet video game culture, and the character himself is pretty distinct and over-the-top compared to James Rolfe. Besides, there isn't really another tournament where he'd make sense to be included.
