Being fair, those characters have dedicated fanbases on /v/ even outside of the tournaments themselves, but they are not ubiquitously well-known like Midna, Dante etc, or a board-wide recent meme like Jack. In that sense, I seriously doubt King will ever have a genuinely unpopular, lesser-known character with no previous tournament history win ever again.
But out of those three characters mentioned already, I think Grimm in particular is a serious contender for the crown. Hell if I were to bet on it I would say he is among the most likely to win 2023.

No, if he has enough luck to get a decent early bracket, Grimm can easily fall into a deep run and straight up win it all. He has been doing progressively better each year and has accumulated a lot of momentum and popularity, even among secondaries who have no real interest in playing his games. The major advantage he has over another thread favorite like say, Battler, is the lack of vocal detractors looking out to eliminate him - people see him as an actual underdog rather than a joke vote.

I have participated in enough tournaments to understand how trends and preferences develop through the years. Don’t take this as me saying "THIS guy is totally going to win", but if it does happen I won’t be surprised in the least.

There was Alipheese in 2022 going up against characters a lot more well-known and significantly higher-seeded than her. I doubt something like that would happen for King though because silent majority fuckery is stronger in that tournament for some reason. It would take a miracle for someone like John Ward or Roland to win a hefty bracket.

I was actually that anon. Of course pure statistics can't determine who's -really- the strongest. This thread >>16305 went into a lot of detail on naunces. Personally I'd still give Reimu the strongest Queen cause of the circumstances. The second year was waaaay bigger than the first, while also still pretty much a pure popularity contest, and her competition probably the toughest. Her finale match was also, I believe, the biggest finale stomp ever.

/co/ is about watching and reading shows and comics, so it makes sense for people to then watch and read the threads and be influenced by them.
/v/, on the other hand, is about video games, and people are more prone to vote for games they have played and liked. They could still read the threads, but a lot of people will still just vote for what they know and love. Plus, some people might not even read the threads, they just vote and leave, because why wouldn't they?

So, the TL;DR is that a lot of voters see Ko/v/ contestants as embodiments of the games they come from rather than a character tournament proper. Probably also the reason why "meme" contestants perform better here than in any of the other tourneys.

This only accounts for stuff that gets put in the booru, but Queen's top ten characters by OC count from >>32341 has everyone besides Buddy be from an Elite Eight. King has 3 that haven't made an elite eight and the second highest was murdered by the silent majority in Jack's best win since Round 1. Also, Queen's fifth highest is Alice so yeah, Queen is definitely more campaign friendly.

I don't think voting for a character because they come from a beloved game is bad. Most vidya characters are mutes but there is room to improvise as long as it sticks to the game's setting, lore, or world or how that character behaves/does in game.

I've read through most of Umineko at this point (kind of took a pause after a bit), but I think it just has to do with protagonist syndrome
Battler gets the most screentime, he has the most material to work with, he has a funny sprite (all three variants of them are), a theme song, and so on
The other guys ultimately work (mostly) as supportive characters in the story even if they've got their own plots going on.
Just like how Beato always gets in, she's the main girl, has a ton of memes, theme songs and so on. The other witches are prominent but half the episodes focus on Beato.

Jill Stingray has lost the first round for the past three years despite making it to round 4 in 2019, and I don't know if that's going to change this year. The King of All Cosmos also performed his worst yet last year, so hopefully he can do better this year. I'm also scared for John Ward since I don't know how likely it'll be for him to qualify again.
