Fuck, I just remembered King 2023's qualifiers being somewhat of a shit show because the hosts couldn't decide whether or not King Boo and Waluigi counted as spin-off characters and the E8 rule at the time only allowing two representatives per series. Since Geralt was teetering around the 129th seed he got bumped to 126th after things were sorted out and the tourney went on like normal.
If that's the case, Geralt's not really beating the Livesey comparisons, he got lucky to qualify.

I don't know about Jack at the bottom. I'd say maybe Batter since he's probably the least conventionally board-popular one.
Queen is more difficult to judge too. It seems to have the biggest disparity of tourneyhead opinion vs. board opinion as far as ranking the winners go (see that poll anon did here a little while ago). For example, Midna usually being placed near bottom and Reimu at the top or near the top when I'm pretty sure /v/ in general would flip that. Also Curly getting seemingly the most overall praise but probably losing out to both Samus and Midna on the main board. Recette is likely at the very bottom either way though.

>Armstrong:
Great inaugural winner but still would have been better if Doomguy won before him. I like more if the kings are characters we can actually play as.
>Batter:
Another great winner and his run made history in these tournaments. OFF is also fun to play.
>Shadow:
Cool winner and almost on par with the insane run Batter had, even though I prefer Knuckles as my favorite Sonic rep. It's great to see a platformer finally be part of the king's lineup.
>Jack:
Not bad but, I have some issues about his run like some have mentioned before, especially the whole "CHAOS" thing going around. At least he gets extra points for being the oldest king if we count his canonical first appearance in the first Final Fantasy game.
>Grimm:
His design is awesome and I like the character but, I simply don't care about Black Souls and the only reason I get to know of its existence is because "ALICEALICEALICEALICE" every fucking time. I also wanted John or Demifiend to take the crown that year.

As the only person to be a soulsfags in this board who had the misfortune of interacting with /vg/ threads alone and the /v/ threads daily, I don't see Ranni coming back since they retroactively hate everything Elden Ring stands for. I agree it was mediocre at best but I don't hate it like some of them do. I'm still wondering how the hell she made it to elite til this day.

I keep hearing this from everyone but that isn't the case for me since I still play pvp ds1 til this day. I was tired as hell back in ds3 but I slowly crawled back. I can get why dlc killed all interest but thankfully I didn't like Elden Ring to care at all for it.
>queen is boring
Last year was something. I never gave a second glance at any of the elite since they usually suck most of the time and lolishit never appeals to me. I'm a youthful woman appreciator and probably a hagfag to an extent.
>>181992
I ignore king but I can see Patches getting the crown: He's the absolute asshole that /v/ deserves who isn't a labeled villain. In all honestly, I want to get rid of the soulsborne filler spots and combine the series into one if we have to. We don't need boss shit cluttering the space with no push. Also I agree that Ace Attorney has too much attention but I think Maya and Phoenix deserve it the most and I can never get mad at Dick Gumshoe my personal bro.

King winners are pretty recent in comparison, but this comes off as an attempt to find a major fault in the Mr. /co/ roster, which has had the least amount of drama and metafagging surrounding it of the tournaments so far. If it were true that Mr. /co/ winners rely too much on nostalgia, then I don't think there is much of a problem with that. It's choosing for the character you like more while also thinking about how much more they mean to you, like growing up with them and recognizing their legacy overall. Even Zorak, who also serves as an example of winning for more than just nostalgia with his campaigning, had people talking about the importance of Clay Martin Crocker's legacy by the end, while the Plunderers are more of a side tournament thing with little impact on Mr. /co/. It's not a flawless roster with Grievous getting a lot of flack for being /tv/ and supported by NSA, but there have been a lot of defenders of Grievous too because of him having more /co/ material and good board history. There have also been complaints about too many Warner Bros. properties, but now, as of Spider-Man, less than half of the winners in Mr. /co/ are owned by Warner Bros. There is obviously personal preference involved in choosing what you think is the best tournament winners roster too, but in the context the nostalgia complaint was brought up in, it's more like someone deflecting to keep criticism off their favorite tournament instead of arguing against the criticism towards their favorite tournament.

Depends when there’s a /v/ matchup, though really you can funpost any vidya character so long as it’s powerscaling related. I’ve seen anons bring up Battler, Batter AND Grimm there before.
Right now the matchup is /a/ related but I don’t think most people care enough to discuss it so it’ll be a few weeks of funposting. Though Kratos is going to be brought up for ages now with how controversial Kratos vs Asura is.

Who do you guys think are some potential up and coming threats for this year's tournaments? Like not established threats and heavy hitters like Scout or Snake or something but more candidates who have thus far been kind of under the radar performance wise
Personally I think Asura could make it big since he got a lot of attention this year from the whole Kratos vs Asura Death Battle debacle, and could very well get boosted both from people remembering his game and him getting cheated out of a deserved win

In the long run, I don't think that episode will have a profound effect on either character's run, but I have noticed that Death Battle seem to matter more to /v/ than /co/.
>Eggman jobs again
>a slew of funposting and support for Bowser
>Kratos beats Asura
>mild funposting in /tnt/ and both get into Co-op on the same team
>Spawn just beat Ghost Rider
>not a single mention of either in the /co/ thread
I won't say anything definitive for now, but I suspect that this correlation stems from Ko/v/ and the Death battle threads having similar funposting mindsets. This could get interesting once Doomguy vs Master Chief 2 drops.

Doesnt the power of friendship thing originate because of Batter wearing Spamton's glasses after their match, thus starting the whole idea of a character adopting all their previous opponents into their campaign, and thus a win for them is a win for all their "friends" they beat along the way?
No.185865

It made sense for that specific match-up. Spamton actually does turn into glasses after his defeat and seeks freedom. The Batter can wear some forms of equipment, and he does recruit Add-Ons during the course of OFF. The whole idea was Spamton got defeated like in Deltarune and joined Batter to aid in him being freed via Purification.

This context was somewhat muddled by the end and somewhat in hindsight, but that was the intent at the time.

i feel like any human character would automatically make for a shit pokemon winner. the franchise is very much not about the human characters and from my experience the people who care more about the humans tend to be retarded waifufags.
hex is probably the best option for a human winner, but she's still not ideal. if we're going to have a pokemon winner, it needs to be one of the pokemon.

King /v/ has been the collective punching bag of tourney discussion for the last few months because almost everyone in the last E8 is controversial, at least among the vocal minority of tourneyheads.

>Shadow
Heavily campaign boosted pick from a controversial franchise that also somehow got both recency bias and nostalgia appeal, cucked JC who a lot of people hee wanted to be the Betty of the tournament and "save" it
>JC
Nothing controversial aside from fake victory screen spam that might have been falseflagging
>Sam
Took over half the tourney with meme RP storylines, cucked Wario out of E8
>Peppino
Cucked Doomguy out of E8
>Raiden
No controversies here
>AM
His /lit/ origins are always a controversial topic
>Luigi
Silently coasted to E8
>Cortex
The definition of a lucky run

The main controversy behind this all being the lack of "traditional popular former E8" winners in King for the last few years, which has already sort of been an issue for many people last year, but back then Schizos were the convenient scapegoat to blame everything on, now it's the hype campaign underdogs.

Ms. /co/ and Ko/v/ are the two big discussions starters for years. Controversy and extra investment always give it more attention. Mr. and Queen in comparison just kinda happen and are straightforward events without much super autism for a bunch of characters (usually). Ms. though "fixed" it's meta problem by having an agreeable and "classic" winner finally which is enough to kind of overlook it was a usual salt fest. King repeated its meta and reinforced its perceived problems. Hence king's been getting all the heat.

I understand it might suck that a franchise full of colorful casts each game has an NPC class for one of it's limited reps in these but if she's an evident /v/ favorite with or without the obnoxious speedrunner artist, which is what these tournaments are about. This is a bitter pill to swallow for a lot of tourneyheads here, but yes; Hex Maniac IS a legitimate, traditionally popular, /v/core pick. The thing here is that you have to accept she's all of those things and yet still can consider her bad choice for a winner.

Now, would Hex do as well as she does without the campaigner? I don't think so, but that also applies to a majority of current elite characters. Let me remind you Hex was just a few votes away from making Top 8 as far back as 2022.

I think the difference is Ms /co/ is trying to be a better tournament
It’s the worst one but not because the voterbase wants it to be. It just had the weirdest alternate route after Spinel that it’s just starting to recover from. Half a decade of host rigging, off-board rigging, weird FOTMs, just general bad luck. People have been pushing for it to get past that and at least be better than the /v/s possibly one day and that’s why Frankie is so well received despite the rest of the tournament being its usual shitfest
King /v/ likes where it is and has actively chosen to make the “hype” picks be the winner, and likes shitting on any strong contestants as “jobbers”. Its a tournament that wants to be Ms /co/ but with more OC, and it gets flack because due to the voterbase it can never be better, only get worse

Before I didn't get this either, I mean isn't it cool that weight classes can be blurred so much that anyone can potentially win with a dedicated enough campaign, even relatively obscure indie game characters like Recette and Batter, or even one of the most mocked characters from one of the most mocked franchises like Shadow? But the tourneyhead crowd is infatuated with the idea of "board representation", that the winner has to be something iconic and popular. Logically this would mean that only 32 or so characters should be able to compete, because I doubt any tournament has more than 32 truly iconic potential winners. But a tournament of 32 all-starts isn't very exciting so people want to be in this middle ground where two thirds of the contestants come in to compete but shouldn't actually ever do well because they're not iconic enough to be "good board representation".

I don't really like how a sizable portion of /tnt/ tourneyheads seem infatuated, as you put it, with picking winners based on "board representation" and "iconic status" or "general popularity" but mostly because those are just ideals rather than something a character can wholly embody and, as seen with Hex Maniac, you can still get something that theorically fit that criteria almost perfectly and is still seen as a bad choice for a character tourney which is why character as conceived in the source material trumps all other metrics btw. However, campaiging in at least King of /v/ has proven to work in such a way people will consciously vote for something they don't like over something they do.

I don't think the debate is ever about campaigning per se or getting a traditional winner for the sake of it. This has always been one of the usual exaggerations. It's about "campooning" or voting based off campaign over character to the point you would vote for a character you disliked because of thread related stuff and meta (e.g. Hex Maniac). It IS a character tourney, that's the point. Collectively, you're basically meant to voting for the character you like the most and their given natural associations (i.e. source material, nostalgia, design, ect.). This is how natural "powerhouses" arise. The tension has always been between people still just wanting the tourney to naturally incline to widely liked celebrated "good" characters that dominate in natural sense as an ideal reflection of the board the tourney represents, and some inter meta circlejerk basically mostly dictated by tourneyheads and the people constantly in the threads. This was the debate in ms. /co/ years before it became a common talking point about King.

That's not what I mean. It's just a reflection of how King of /v/ voters don't take the tournament seriously at all so they are easily swayed by a campaign, as opposed to Ms. /co/ voters who take the event TOO seriously are always overanalyzing this or that.

And to add, this is something that only seems to be an issue in those and Mr. and Queen (until Hexfag) did not have these constant debates. Which begs the question again why can't there be a tourney that is both fun and liked by its voterbase while also being agreeable in a conventional sense about its winners? Mr. is now attacked by the schizo and under scrutiny for being "boring" for the first time cause it's a tourney that actually pulls that off and so jumbles up the arguments. Queen almost every year is this way too.

Unless it's their main people don't just lock in their votes for every character throughout the entire tournament, it doesn't work like that. One round you'll vote for one character then decide the next round vote against them. I guarantee you can think of a few times you've personally done this just reading this post. A campaign should primarily be for fun but is also functionally meant to sway votes. And what of a matchup that happens to pit two of your favorite characters together, how do you decide then?

Armstrong-sama i think you're reading comprehension is bad. Maybe tourneys are literally whatever they're voted to be. if they're a wank over classics then that's what the tourney is. If they're a wank over hype and meta then that's what it is. The argument here has not and is probably never gonna be solved cause there was never a written in stone purpose to tourneys in the first place. And traditionalfags are always gonna be subverted by meta and hype to some degree, and campaigner/meta centric fags will always have to accept there's a silent majority and people who will not care for their personal favorites and antics.

Mr. is always a fun time with tons of memorable moments, like the gay wedding (though remembered more infamously in hindsight), Dale and Xavier's friendship, Farquaad's speeches, Jonah trying to expose Balls, and the strongest. There are some events that feel similar to king ones too, like Wuss in Toots losing by one vote and GETimus, but it doesn't get as out of hand except for that GET autism for drawings during 2023 or everything leading to the gay wedding. As other anons put it earlier, at least these out of hand moments didn't have as strong of an effect on the actual bracket as they would in king. Then it mostly always ends with a solid winner with few complaints about them. It's not the fastest tournament or the most OC-heavy, but the speed it goes is fine, valuing quality more than quantity.

Some King anons expressing for a while that they don't like Spidey as a winner is kind of funny because they may have inadvertently helped him win. Months before the main tournament started and when complaints about the schizo alliance were at a high, with Mr. /co/ being held as a gold standard for winners, an argument that Mr. /co/ has too many villain winners and Warner Bros. winners became common as a response. While there were some critiques during Mr. /co/ 2023 that there were too many villain winners, the debates about it when debating schizos may have helped keep the critiques alive with even charts about it being made. Warner Bros. also had their winners as a tournament pattern of winning Mr. /co/ every other year with both finalists being owned by Warner Bros., except 2018, but it could have been Johnny vs. Jack without the host rigging for Captain America. It opened up an opportunity to kill three birds with one stone with the next winner by also finally giving comics a win. I can't complain, though. Spidey's cool, and it's good to break habits for more variety.

This isn't even tourney OC you retards. You're following some dude around because you're that obsessed over him not drawing porn of his avatar. How did you all go from hating attention whores to giving them more attention?

Right let's just ignore characters like Tifa, 2B, Bayonetta and so far. Clearly an off model design is the last stand for sexy women.

I don't see why wanting the biggest quality OCfag in tourneys to finally do nudes of of his coomer main is a big deal. By association he might start doing it in his actual campaigns like a bunch of people have wanted.

Most people wanted him to campaign for an actual character like Eggman not more nudes. If he didn't even do it for the porn tournament, he's not doing it now. This obsessed with one artfag is getting out of hand.

Consdiering Hexfag and his self-insert pet comes up in every single stealth thread and are gonna be a major topic in succeeding years of /v/ tourneys I'd say it's fairly related at least.
