I have been holding back saying anything on this for awhile to prevent arguments. Now that we're finally at Elite 8, I think I should mention it. It really feels like we have been just going for the generic hero picks most of the time. I understand this is a heroes tournament and I would be fine with the results as I don't believe there is a such thing as characters too boring to win if it came with just as great campaigning as some of the characters we had to lose, but I don't think it has. Again, I'm not just talking about last round, but for most of the tournament. It doesn't help my concerns someone said last thread this elite eight will be neat just because it could be half comic characters though admittedly some of the comic characters were going up against much weaker characters anyway. I don't think the Elite 8 is bad and some of the characters have been trying to improve their campaigning, but I really do think Heroes of /v/'s was much better. That Elite 8 was great. This one is just okay to meh. We could have done much worse, but we also could have done much better.

Kuzco I can understand losing because Puss was trying really hard that round, but Kuzco I think was doing more up to that point. Birdman's loss hurt me a lot since he was so much fun to writefag for, especially since Popeye barely did anything the next round, but he'll be back for /cov/ with Phoenix Wright, so hopefully he gets his chance there.

I'm not completely done with this tournament yet. I want to try and lend some support to Hank, and I'd also like to try and stream something for the thread to watch. I'm leaning towards The Emperor's New Groove since people liked Kuzco's campaign.

That's what it was for me. Space Ghost had a great campaign, and I'm not even that great of a fan of Puss (his fans could get pretty obnoxious when they couldn't shut up about his movie being the greatest thing ever). But I voted for him because I thought he was more fitting for this tournament.

I definitely get you two, it really isn't true /co/, but it's not really /a/ either. Thanks to the laxer rules for the side tourneys, they would technically be non-western /co/. Nightshift's main tourney rules would not permit them entry.

For the record, TBF is about this Japanese:
Imagine if Toei Animation licensed Disney to animate, direct, produce and so on a DTVA Dragon Ball spinoff series (set in a different setting that was only vaguely similar).
However, the Toei staff and Toriyama are doing the script, music, character designs (which are then taken and adapted by Disney), and they also make a Japanese dub of it which happens parallel to the American one.
If there was one board that properly accommodates the series, it'd be /m/, or /tv/.

The only reason I wanted to test a nomination was because /a/ tourneys are never-ever, and even with their sanction on the board by the mods they'd need a whitelist exception/rules designed for them unlike something like Molcar (which are actual Japanese puppets).
It's actually kind of funny, Molcar has a MAL entry but TBF doesn't cause it was produced by a Taiwanese studio.

That said, I'd definitely be fine with losing here. Busy week, out of my element (I don't know how my main keeps winning since I thought /co/ was more elitist than this) and I'm as satisfied as I can be with an E8 spot. Especially considering the last tournament.
Hank's a pretty popular guy on /co/ anyway, as far as I've gathered.

I don't want to get into any arguments, but I'll try to explain my reasoning.

I don't want to open up the floodgates for the slippery slope of letting in live-action movie characters that happen to have CGI in them. It's potentially a very grey, controversial area. As lenient as the rules are, I try to draw the line somewhere, for /co/ it's usually at anime and live-action. I decided to allow TF because it's not technically anime. NC is technically live-action, but I allowed him as a sole e-celeb exception for his meme status on /co/ similar to AVGN. Detective Pikachu is a CGI character from a live-action movie, which I personally wouldn't consider /co/ material.

I was going to suggest you bring this up with NSA during Mr. and maybe get /co/ to vote on this. Is there enough demand to have a vote about this here?

Like the pastebin says, I don't mind a handful of non-/co/ characters with /co/ material participating, same for /v/, as long as they don't get spammed and start taking over the tourney.
>>53816
I mentioned WFRR back in Round 1 when talking about this. It's pretty much universally viewed as a /co/ property, with live-action being combined with animation as its defining gimmick. DP is just another live-action movie with CGI. Technically there's not much difference, but I think the perception of those two on /co/ would be vastly different.
>>53818
Live-action isn't outright banned on /co/, but it's not usually considered /co/ material. I guess I can have a vote on this kind of thing in the finals to gauge how many people actually want to see this kind of thing here.

Seiyuu... so is that Chinese or Japanese? Actually, if you say Seiyuu is just like those places, I'm just gonna take your word on it and drop that question. This "Lucky Luke" sounds like it could be a cowboy's name, so I'm gonna assume the West he means is within the United States of America, which happens to be the country we're in. It's divided into different states, and you're standing on the great soil of Texas which is down south, and I couldn't ask to live in a better state, I tell you what. We've got things like barbecue, football, fresh lawns, all the propane you can ever have, and many more. So, tell me a bit about yourself and how Seiyuu's been going.

Good Lord! That doesn't sound like a country I'd like to step my foot in. I'm willing to bet those swords would've fallen into the wrong hands if those people are chasing you around the ends of the Earth, especially with a tyrant like that princess taking charge.
Well, at least you're safe for now in Arlen, I suppose. I think you'll find we have a great little community here and I especially recommend trying out some of the things I've said to help ease your mind a bit, even golfing and fishing are options. As for barbecue? It's only the best way to prepare your food in my opinion, you can cook meat, fish, and vegetables if you wanted to. Although I personally suggest using a propane-powered grill instead of using charcoal, it will make your food taste better, I tell you what.

I'm glad you've mentioned that because I was out to get a drink myself. There's plenty of alcohol we've got over here, but our pride and glory is beer, and nothing says beer more than Alamo Beer. It's what helps me relax after a hard day's work, I tell you what. The best part is, it's specifically brewed in the Lone Star State of Texas so I don't have to stress over those imported stuff. I think you should give Alamo a try yourself.

While I haven't faced this one directly, some boy named Jimmy Neutron started accusing me of a crime in qualifiers before Harvey Birdman proved my innocence. I've caught word that you were up against his old man in round 3, so hopefully he went back home and taught that boy a lesson about respecting your elders. I was up against this Australian man in round 1 who overslept and showed up at the last minute. Round 2 had a dog who was also a sleeper. I faced Batman in round 3 who was more concerned with showing off his credit card and dancing in a club rather than talking to me directly. Last round I was up against a cheese-obsessed inventor who kept fantasizing over science-fiction which caused him to lose his marbles. They're quite an interesting group of folks, but I wish they weren't so gotdang lazy, and I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had to deal with a sleepyhead.

This is something I actually was thinking of for a while. I already mentioned some time after /v/illains that the /co/ side has a bigger bias against "bueno zoomer properties" than the /v/ side, who allowed FNAF of all things to win a tournament, though anons told me I was wrong for comparing side tourneys to main ones.

Now we have something to compare fairly, and it's pretty ironic how the second you bring up DTVA, the rhetoric of /tnt/ changes from "fuck the silent majority voting based on popularity, these tournaments are for campaigning" to "eh, actually maybe sometimes it's not so bad to spitevote a character from a show I don't like", even if it's a campaigner facing a literal silent coompick.

Hank is an easy choice for me. King of the Hill is a /co/ staple and Hank himself is a beloved character who's been having great campaigning and OC in a tournament where campaigns have generally been either on and off or dead silent. Shou had great stuff too but he's as "loophole" as you can get on /co/ while Thunderbolt Fantasy hasn't had much discussion on the board (even then, there are debates on whether it should be classified as /co/ or /a/) plus his anon just had a win with Torres in /v/illains and is fine with Hank winning this round anyway.
Hank's definitely more deserving of the "Hero of /co/" title while Elite 8 is a good stopping point for Shou. This could also very well be Hank's best shot this year since the odds are more or less stacked against him in Mr. /co/lympus.

That may be another reason, but people just thinking of characters and nominating them because "why not?" is what I would think is more likely. For literal whos it isn't that bad, since it means that they are definitely not getting in the tournament.
However, when it's generally popular characters that are the ones being nominated, they might just get in anyway.

>>53999
Well, there are only few campaigners, some may come from /co/ but they are some from /v/. Being from /v/, they might not be exactly interested in the extremely popular characters on /co/, but a lot of voters are probably from /co/, so those were the ones to get in.

In the big tournaments nominations and qualifiers are a measure of popularity in a more pure sense, and as long as there isn't much spite voting, genuinely popular characters will generate activity naturally, so there's not much risk in nominating characters you may not campaign for yourself. There are enough people to create a feedback loop of excitement and campaigning regardless of who's in, again provided they're still in because they're genuinely popular and not out of spite. /tnt/ tourneys are functionally different because they're smaller and more campaign focused, but in some ways they get treated like they're bigger, like in this regard.

What kind of campaigning would you guys like to see when someone can't RP or OC? And how much? There's demand for thread presence when it comes to characters, but I think a lot of people have the impression that there are barriers to campaigning. Like lack of skill, lack of time, or feeling like it's too late to start.

Personally there have been times where I thought of RPing a character but knew I would not be able to keep it up for long and that doing so may discourage someone else from doing it because the character is now "taken". I wonder how many others feel that way. What are some good alternative ways to campaign outside the obvious?

Newer properties getting dunked on, even if they're highly popular, has always been an awkwardness in /co/ tourneys. Maybe it's worse with /co/ than /v/ cause toons are more inherently about nostalgia in childhood/teenhood and so there's less engagement or connection with newer stuff. Also there's less reiteration and percolation of a character through the subculture vs. popular vidya characters who can stay recognizable to multiple generations.

Plenty of characters that didn't get in would have gotten something, yes, most of mine didn't get in either. Considering the minimum amount of votes that were needed to get into the tournament, I don't think those two are truly literal whos, despite me not knowing them.
A lot of people vote immediately, and most will just vote for who they know.

Campaign can just be reminding us your character exists, how good they are or showing us the quality of their source material. It can be as simple as posting a Youtube clip of them.
RP is like improv, don't overthink any "rules" because there aren't really any. Jump in as whoever you want and any contradictory logic will unscramble itself. We had 2 Mickey Mouses and it still worked.

Campaigning can't be separate from RPing because RPs are a type of campaigns; OCs are also a type of campaigns.

The point of campaigning is to spread awareness of the character that you are supporting by just mentioning them, so you don't really need to do all of those things.

I personally just take in thread presence and effort/passion when it comes to voting. Quality of OC is not what I care about, because I feel like that is unfair to vote based on someone with talent. If I deem both characters deserving of the win, I either vote for my favourite character or on a coin flip.
RP or OC are nice, but honestly I don't pay too much attention to them. Often I don't even read RP, I do acknowledge its presence, of course. Sometime I also miss pictures, though that's happens less.
Personally, my favourite thing about these tournaments is making stuff myself, like my terrible drawings or dumb Gmod stuff, and just campaigning in general.

>I've tried this on your battlefield, Superman. Not let's try this on mine.

[UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF TIME LATER...]

Ladies and gentlemen, I have brought you here for an emergency court meeting I organized on account of something very peculiar and disturbing that I've discovered when analyzing my latest opponent.

You see, everyone, Superman is not as innocent as he seems. I believe the man of steel may have betrayed our trust and might be hiding a terrible secret from all of us. Alas, he probably didn't account for facing anyone like me who could easily discover his secret identity.

As much as it pains me to say it, I must share my finding with the tournament audience for the sake of transparency and justice, which is blind and takes no sides. And so, with this in mind, it has come to my attention that Superman is actually a DTVA character!

You must be thinking: but this is absurd, Superman is clearly owned by WB, not Disney! As someone proficient in the world of law, I have this to say: things in reality are not always as they are on paper. And in reality, I have grounds to believe Superman is a fully-fledged DTVA character!

First of all, let me show you this picture from the defendant's newest cartoon show, "My Adventures with Superman". As you can clearly see, it shows Superman in the company of none other than Luz Noceda, the protagonist of the DTVA show "The Owl House"! Now how would my opponent explain that? What, is this perhaps some unrelated character that just happened to look extremely similar to Luz? Quite a ridiculous theory, don't you think?

Perhaps we could let this slide as a simple coincidence if this was the only suspicious thing, but there's more. In this next picture, you can see the defendant's powered-up state from the same cartoon. Glowing eyes and a blue aura around him. Remind you of anyone? That's right, it's another DTVA protagonist, Anne Boonchuy from the show "Amphibia"! That show was clearly the first time a main character of something became blue upon entering a powered-up state. There were absolutely no instances of that happening before, ever. Which clearly implicates the defendant in having a connection with DTVA!

To further add to this, let me show you an animated segment from the show, which shows Superman transforming in a sequence commonly known as "henshin"! Henshin is something that's very prominent in magical girl cartoons. And which Western animation studio is most well-known for producing magical girl shows in recent years? That's right, Disney TV Animation. 'Nuff said.

Lastly, as we now know, big Mickey himself (with some possible help from the Decepticon army?) has drugged some of the most popular contestants to make them sleep. And yet Superman, the literal #1 seed, has stayed at least somewhat awake during the whole tournament? That doesn't add up at all. There must have been some sort of agreement between the defendant and Mickey Mouse behind the scenes. Now, perhaps a DTVA character entering Elite 8 by themselves is not so bad, but doing so in secret? I'm afraid that's not very heroic. The defendant should have been upfront and let everyone know he's DTVA. I rest my case.

Now, it's up to the voters of this tournament to give their verdict. Does Superman deserve to be forgiven for keeping such a secret from us all, or should he be eliminated immediately? Only (You) can decide!

What do you mean "falling", Foggy? That's just the truth. Superman's heartbeat suggested he was hiding a secret, and I've discovered what it is with irrefutable evidence.
>Right... Matt, how long exactly have you spent in this tournament without sleeping?
About five days. Had to constantly stay on guard to avoid becoming just another sleeper. You may think I'm tired and useless, but I actually see things clear as day now.
>Uh-huh... But don't you think this accusation could backfire? I mean, you are an actual Disney-owned character, wouldn't it be easier to pin the accusation of being DTVA on you?
Ha, nice one, Foggy. That would require me to get a cartoon first, and we both know that's never happening.

quite the theory Mr. Murdock but I've noticed a few holes in it
Firstly: The woman in the first image while she resembles Mrs Noceda somewhat she is a completely different person, the woman you've posted seems to be one of the many woman that are attracted to Superman and as we've seen in the Qualifiers and Round 1 Mrs Noceda is still in a relationship with her girlfriend. Hm. What do you have to gain from defending Superman, Mr. Kent? Is it because you make a living documenting his heroics and wouldn't want his reputation to be tarnished? Normally I admire your journalistic dedication, you remind me a lot of my friend Ben Urich in this sense. But sometimes it's best to accept the truth, however ugly it may seem, rather than try to deny it. Well, we'll see what the people have to say in just under an hour.

...I considered this possibility as well. A part of me even wondered: could Superman's secret identity actually be Battler? That would make a lot of sense. One of the strongest heroes disguised as one of the weakest participants, a perfect cover-up. But then I decided it was silly, their behavior is far too different. And that would've been too harsh an accusation either way, Battler isn't even /co/ after all.

Mr Ushiromiya's secret character is either Mao Mao or Optimus Prime. Since Mr Ushiromiya seems to be in the denial of super powers or anything supernatural it'd seem unlikely for the character to be Optimus Prime since he has a piece of his God inside his chest which removes him from the final 2 suspects which leaves Mao Mao as the only answer available.
