I really do wonder if it's partially in response to this year's winners, particularly the trio of team tournaments earlier this year. Most seemed happy about them winners from each, but wouldn't shock me if a couple of weirdly obsessed autists on here started rallying hard against some perceived "nostalgia wank" after being disappointed by them. Likely also saw Raven winning Ms. /co/ and decided to use it as "evidence" for their agendas without looking into the full context. I'd be surprised if we see another fairly new character winning this year as well. Garland was a massive exception and Grimm still took three whole years to get the win in. The only won off the top of my head I could see is John Ward, but not sure he can quite recapture the magic of his last run.

While we're on this topic, he irony is that I've personally felt Shadow is a soft pivot back to normalcy for King, even despite his win being in part due to lucky timing. Garland and especially Grimm are characters that were not only more recent (effectively in Jack's case), but they were winners that felt extra /v/core. There's an appeal to that, but when you get two in a row it does make sense to pivot somewhat after that. Shadow is a very popular character. He wasn't one of the big tournament powerhouses, sure, but he's a character with decades of exposure behind him. He's effectively as old as Dante, possibly the most beloved non-inaugural winner to date. The fact Shadow has such broad appeal makes him feel less niche a pick than the Batter as well. Seriously, OFF is a great game, but it's still insane its protagonist won on /v/.

By a lot of accounts, Shadow is a big shift after what is currently half of the tournament's winners thus far. He's far more in line with Dante in a lot of ways, and this was pointed out a lot right after his win. Yeah, JC Denton would have done similar with less baggage, but that doesn't change the fact Shadow is actually a move back toward older icons after the weirdness of the previous few years for King. Another point often overlooked? He had a big campaign around the start of the previous King before the Year of Shadow was even properly leaked, but ironically was halted oddly soon by Rayman's own FOTM boost. Even if Rayman's actual campaign was really earnest, it's not controversial to say Laserhawk memes helped him in at least earlier rounds. Without it, Shadow would have likely gone at least a couple rounds and felt less jarring just sweeping through the following year.

I'm going to put it one way here: much as they're beloved, what spot would we be in if Peppino or Jetstream Sam won instead? Love both and they had fun pushes last year, but I don't know if I'd call either healthy. Sam had the most tournament-centric campaign of the year (if not EVER) and would be the second Metal Gear winner over Raiden or Snake. Peppino's full game is still not that old and he would be winning in a year his primary inspiration narrowly loss out on returning to Elite Eight. Anons voted the two older characters in for the finals, and it was a close match as well between them.

Is Shadow a good winner? That's up to opinion, and you can certainly argue against him. Would I say he's truly just following the same exact trends with King's previous few winners? I'd argue he's not, and it's possibly the most misunderstood part of his win I've seen in retrospect towards the tournament. Now his actual campaign had at least some clear parallels in terms of it dominating thread attention by the end, but the character himself winning feels more like a potential odd transition point for who's going to potentially win the tournament the next couple years.
