It seems I am against another legendary anime character with golden yellow hair. Listen shorty, as much as I like that hair of yours, only one of us can enter the Top 10! I met Josh Seth at a convention and he was super nice, and I received the news of my dad's death while watching the movie with my brother. I can never forget it for that reason
>Piccolo. Coolest dude in DragonBall, just an absolute classic icon. If he outright won I'd totally get it.
>Guts. Berserk is my favorite manga ever, Guts is my favorite in the running anyway so it really wouldn't matter who is against him.
>Dark Yugi. Could go either way here, but I have seen a lot of funny Yugi posts here that aren't just /v/ getshit.
>Kenshiro. Probably the hardest choice to make, I do like the Yotsuba manga but man, Kenshiro just feels right for how classic and influential FOTNS is.
>Shinji. Love NGE and End of Evangelion. Shinji was a great way to do a flawed protagonist that's definitely a scumbag, but still someone you can have some sympathy for. Haven't seen Little Witch Academia anyway.
>D. Great campaigning and the Bloodlust OVA is one of the coolest things ever put on screen. That guy that would edge himself on dying to kill monsters as a ghost was unbelievably cool I have the original OVA on steelbook as well. Bloodlust is definitely better, but I honestly love sovlful grimdark 80's shit

He's actualy a japanese novel adapted character. Only other one until last round was Reinhard I think. He holds one of the best looking aninated movies of all time under his belt (and i personally think the writing is great too) and an old drug trip 1980s one. Adapted from the 3rd and 1st novels respectively.
There's also a great looking manga that got storytimed on /a/ recently.
Supposedly they were going to be making a series but it became radio static for like 3 years at this point.
Also he's pretty cool.

Might as well discuss Akira now that Kaneda's in R4 and I don't want him to be entirely silent. I love the 2001 dub but I also think the Streamline dub is pretty good for an 80s production. Cam Clarke is underrated as Kaneda.

On the topic of Lupin and Fujiko I really like their relationship, like for example in this clip you can see even though it's not explicitly pointed out for the viewer, Lupin trusts so much that Fujiko genuinely loves him, despite the countless times she's betrayed him, that he'll turn his back to a gun knowing she'd rather kill her former partner than let Lupin die. It's a very nuanced relationship that has a lot more layers outside of the surface level of "lupin lusts after fujiko and she betrays him" which is why I like it a lot, I think Mystery of Mamo and Part 5 in particular did a really good job portraying it.

All this Lupin talk reminded me that the franchise's first exposure in the US (and Miyazaki I think) was a Dragon's Lair clone for the arcades called "Cliff Hanger" that uses Castle of Cagliostro and Mystery of Mamo footage. They didn't bother dubbing over the Japanese grunts lol.

Another tidbit, the name "Cliff Hanger" wasn't something Stern Electronics made up to differentiate it from Lupin III to sell to Americans, it was actually a title change TMS made for countries where the Arsene Lupin stories weren't public domain yet (same reason why Lupin is sometimes referred to as "Wolf" or "Rupan" in some older dubs). It was never used for any US releases, but it was used for the Latin American dubs.

For what it's worth, the game does have text prompts that at least clue you in on what you're supposed to do, but I think even adding glowing prompts would've been costly since they would have to edit the animation.
I just think this game's existence is funny because it came out during a time when Dragon's Lair was a smash hit and companies wanted to get in on the craze, but they couldn't afford Don Bluth-level animation so they imported anime that they thought could work well for an FMV game for dirt cheap because they didn't think the medium would properly catch on in America (this also happened with Galaxy Express 999 turning into Freedom Fighter/Escape From Cyber City). Little did they know is that not only Lupin III would become popular, but Hayao Miyazaki would go on to be the biggest anime director.

With Lupin on the mind thanks to the tourney, I finally decided to watch Castle of Cagliostro. I just finished it about 15 minutes ago and HOLY SHIT THIS IS AN ACTUAL CONTENDER FOR THE BEST ANIMATED FILM!

The action, the humor, the tension, the sense of humanity in it all, the soundtrack. I'm almost fucking speechless. You can bet your ass I'm watching more Lupin III after this!

Speaking of Lupin Zero, I suggest giving it a watch to anyone who's into Lupin and hasn't seen it yet. They really nailed the charm of the early parts and made a really engaging overarching story as well, it's short but it was a huge breath of fresh air having some good Lupin again after how underwhelming Part 6 was.
And again, kid Lupin and Jigen are adorable (also I like how Jigen has a deep ass man voice as a kid since he's already chain smoking cigarettes)
