My thinking was that everything from The War on is real. DDanni really does have Danny and Delta in her-his mind palace, the passage of time and Molly's memories being further fucked by trauma and Solver fuckery has her confident that that kid she remembered was Buddy, and so on.
As for what happens to these robutts if they learn the truth? ... Actually not a lot. The sentinel handler who Alice grave robbed his hat from for her homunculus minion-son, a Mr. Hawkins, is a skinjob who learned the truth about himself and was depressed for a nice long while, but he had an extremely important job to occupy his mind with while he got over it.

I think original Buddy is still just a human who had Danni as a childhood friend, met Molly during a meet and greet and was a superfan, fought in the war, survived, and now follows the cozy domestic life with DDanni and Molly
The other Buddy, the mechanical one, Liquid Buddy, Mecha Buddy, whatever he's called, was created during the experiments as a potential higher stability supplement to SDs and middle ground between them and Grunts. He has all of Buddy's memories but doesn't realize he's a robot and like Metal Sonic is enraged by the imposter (real Buddy) who's stolen his ideal life
And then the two race on Stardust Speedway (Interstate 5) to determine who is the superior Buddy (and while they're racing Mecha Buddy realizes he must be the fake since he has jet boosters in his asscheeks, which seems like a robot thing)
