AM was againts JC in the 3rd place consolation match, right? For some reason that match is always very tough for campaigned characters. The same thing happened in Mr. /co/ this year, look at how different the reception to Optimus and Samurai Jack was yet the latter was the one who won the bronze.
No.70936

Jack and Optimus was by a fairly small margin. The point isn't that AM lost, but that he lost by a massive margin. That being said, I do get what you're saying about campaigns often not mattering much for 3rd place. Imagine that a lot of people's positions change when it's not as high stakes and simply go for who they see as the bigger pick.
No.70937

I don't want to open up old wounds, but I suspect the fact AM became victim to a smear campaign the moment the tournament advanced into the semifinals stage managed to sour a considerable amount of lurkers on him. It could have been especially damaging since there was this insistence he had been cruising through the tournament while doing nothing, and you just know how autistic some people can be about campaiging.

With that being said, I still think he wouldn't have won in an hypothetical 2022 bracket without Garland. Not necessarily losing to Doomguy in semis, but still to JC in the finals.

Like, can you imagine how absurd it would be to talk about a tournament like that after the fact? People would have to cite the wiki constantly when talking about the winner. The bracket image itself would be a convoluted mess. Not to mention all the asteriskfagging.

The fact the losers' bracket wasn't being properly recorded was a mess in of itself. Made the whole thing feel even less formal. If we DID have SHODAN win, people would have to go back and manually go through all the round results to throw it together.

Isn't the loser's bracket inherently easier to move on to the next round compared with the main bracket? In the current four way match format, two out of the four characters in a given match just lost the main bracket. Instead of having to overcome opposition that gets stronger as the tournament comes to an end, the LB winner has been facing other losers the entire time. If a LB winner ever won over the main bracket champion we would never hear the end of it.

See this is what I hate more than anything. WHAT do they constitute as a "rigged vote"? Spitevotes for example suck, but in terms of the form itself there's no way to differentiate from a good and fair "A is good, but I really prefer B" vote from a "FUCK A! I HATE A AND A VOTERS, I'LL VOTE B TO MAKE A STATEMENT!". So how do they distinguish between a fake bad rigger vote and an honest regular vote? Especially when they've told us "use throwaways"? I actually liked the email thing from Ms. /co/ as a sort of pseudo-whtelist, but they handled it in the most horrible way possible I don't at all blame anons for being scared of it.

Alright, VEGA, I'm leaving for the tournament now. Queue up the portal.
>As you wish. The portal shall be operational in approximately 20 minutes from now.
Uh, fine. Are my guns at least loaded and working?
>All guns are functional and loaded.
Is the BFG charged up?
>Fully charged and ready to use.
The great communicator?
>All fueled up and sharpened.
DY-NO-MITE! I'M ALL READY TO RIP THIS TOURNAMENT A NEW ASSHOLE!
>I would recommend that you take this with more caution. My analysis of your previous runs has shown a significant drop in performance.
I KNOW ASSHOLE, why do you think I've been training this ENTIRE YEAR! I'm not letting another fat ass scientist or two-faced cocksucker get in my way of becoming king THIS TIME! I'LL RIP AND TEAR ANYONE WHO EVEN THINKS OF GETTING IN MY WAY!
>You really should rethink your approach to this. Relying on raw strength alone is not going to cut it.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN "NOT GOING TO CUT IT"?!
>I've taken recordings of your previous battles with the demons and converted them to data. I've then thrown said data into a simulation of these tournaments and ran them over 50 million times, each with 126 randomized competitors. By my calculations, you have a 10.8% chance of winning.
Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?! Those numbers have GOT to be bullshit!
>The numbers don't lie. The simulations have shown me you're able to defeat weaker opponents. But struggle with heavy hitters around the quarter and semi-finals. I suggest you-
WELL FUCK THE SCIENCE! I'm not letting low chances stop me from brute forcing my way to victory. Like they always say. "If it ain't broke, DON'T FIX IT"!
>If you insist.

I've nominated everyone I can think of already. I nominate less and less characters each year, I feel like the amount of filler and memepicks each year gets lower and lower. After the first time you nominate tons of google doodle characters its not really as funny of an observation that those technically count as video game characters.

Person who nominated him here. I wanted to find a middle ground for the guy. He should absolutely have his real self front and center this year, but that persona is so well-known that at least giving it a mention seems fair. Used the shaded version as well to not make it as jarring.

Hey hosts, watch out. "Cyberjobe" is just a dogwhistle for "Cobson", a popular soyjak. It's the character a very popular 'jak template is based off of, but unlike Titan from Megaman there's almost no discussion about the source material to separate it from. If he gets in that's just going to further prompt their raiding. I PROMISE Lawnmower man for Sega cd is NOT some beloved classic game with discussion.

The problem was it was technically nominated correctly. There IS a lawnmower man game from the sega genesis. It just so happens nobody gives a shit about the game, and the character itself is from a movie that's become exceptionally popular for those degenerates to trace over. I mean it could simply just be knocked out under the rule it's a film character, not a game character.

This, and she had a huge threat taken down in Midna taken down surprisingly early on that part of that bracket. While Recette definitely had legitimate factors going for her, there was also a LOT of luck involved. Just look at her opponent.

>went against Jill Valentine and got the initial win by ten votes, with early support likely clutching it
>fought Naoto at a time when Persona's tournament presence was weakening
>went against 5-Volt round three, which despite her being surprisingly decent was definitely not a huge threat
>then faced Gebura, whom is from arguably one of the more niche recurring forces in these tournaments (and a closer match than the last two)
>QF opponent was Shantae, the most contentious girl out of that year's E8 (at least during the tournament)
>had to face Marisa over Curly, with the former having a disadvantage from Reimu winning the previous year

Madotsuki was a real fight, but the cards between Jill and Mado were just played ridiculously well in her favor.

It's hard to say HOW much of a meme pick Koishi is over other options, and I say that as a big support over her. There's a lot of genuine love I have for the character, yet her nature also inherently breeds a bunch of funposting. Regardless, I do think she has one key factor going for her either way: she'd at least be a very different kind of winner from Reimu. It sounds ironic, but I feel the first series' overlap winner is either going to have a very clear tie to the previous one or be quite a different breed.

you had to be there, it was the idea of the ultimate underdog from a game that was beloved a VERY long time ago and not as many people knew about her one drawfag. So it was seen as an oldfag victory, underdog victory, and campaign victory all at once. A lot of people voted for Recette because Mado was SUCH an obvious top-dog no way, Recette could win, so they HAD to vote for the less popular one (Underdog loops around to being top dog on 4chan, unless you get the absurd 2022 energy of three out of four tournament top dogs winning it tends to be a disadvantage)
Ironically Recette is probably what got Batter to win, because Batter didn't get so far for how popular OFF is, but how insane his campaign was and the overwhelming love campaigning had that year. I miss that optimism, Ms. /co/ especially could learn from it.

Underdog win for the sake of having an underdog is the core issue. The only merit you can give Recette is being an old /v/ game. I think it should've been Eggman, but Batter isn't out of place either and OFF is a pretty iconic game in its own right.
Compare it to the next biggest underdog winner, Zorak. Zorak is an underdog winner but he had legitimate merits and reason to win considering the legacy of his show and being a generally enjoyable character.

I think Recette kind of exposes the problem with underdoggery, being that they will inevitably look highly out of place in a normally strong pantheon and no one but the people that were specifically there caught up in it will look very favorably on them.
Campaign voting goes too far when it takes up the entire course of the tourney imo. It's voting in too much of a meta world.

>Cirno I'm alright with since she at least has dedicated supporters who try to make her a fun pick
If Cirno was silent I would have way more issues with her, to be frank. She is a fun character, but at the same time I also see her as THE face of secondaries in the series. She's at least certainly iconic enough to at least feel qualified for the crown, but if it was up to me I wouldn't really give her the nod too far over some other options from her series (let alone others). The fact she has actual consistent support is the main reason I let her slide.

>The rest suck and I maintain 2hu Alice should not have gotten in, literally the only thing she did was serve as cannon fodder for the Alice Alliance who don't even care about Touhou they just wanted another Alice to use as reinforcement for maximizing their chances of getting an Alice in E8.
Maybe most the Alice picks dropping out quite quick this year will lead to the alliance being toned down next year. I will say Alice was certainly more prevalent in the Touhou fanbase earlier on, but nowadays she is largely under the radar. If people brought some old energy it could have been fun, but there was barely any talk around her period.

>I don't want to see boring ass Marisa again and I sure as hell don't want Flandre and Remilia hogging the slots like they did in 2021 and 2022
I would be fine if Marisa made it far again with the backing to justify it, although I'm also very open I really like her as a character. Putting bias more aside, I do think she's not in the best position to win coming off Reimu. I am still surprised she didn't qualify this year, but at the same time it was reassuring to know we can have some variance in picks assuming this year wasn't a fluke.

Remilia absolutely feels like a non-starter, but I'll give Flandre that she has her own quirks that would give her some merit. Still, she's in a very similar league to Cirno, and with way less tournament support at that. People would have to really pull out a strong campaign for her, but otherwise it is going to feel disappointing if we ever end back up with Cirno / Flandre.

Not entirely wrong, Tifa was the finalist against Reimu and now she's SHIT and FINISHED which if anything shows the shift over the years from basic picks to slightly less basic picks. Mado is really tricky to rate because she did eat apart a lot of the losers' bracket before she came up against the underdogs of the year. It does show a major hole in her prospects having lost to a strong silent pick at the start, but she definitely needs another year before we can really see if her 2021 run was more of a fluke or not.

Out of the runner-ups thus far, Ammy feels the least likely to suffer from it. I feel she will end up similar to Daffy or Hank in Mr. /co/, not really being hit that hard by runner-up status compared to some others. Hornet will definitely do better than Mado on a retry, for one either Silksong will come out or Silksong will unironically be more hyped than Half-life 3 was by that point. They also took the loss a lot better, or at least were PERCEIVED to take the loss better. A factor not often considered is lot of people just kindof hate Recette as a winner, so it's going to reflect badly on Mado and have anons think she's a poor sport. Compare that to Midna, who's inarguably more popular and accepted as a winner, it means Hornet is seen as the "better loser". Ammy will likely have a similar fate, especially since several of the Amaterasu artists were pushing for Curly to keep her first place.

I do wonder if this could have actually happened. Batter seemed to win very much on his own terms, yet at the same time could have seen some not wild on the "forced" thematic pairing. Underdog means a loser or predicted loser in a struggle or contest. Batter failed to qualify before and Zorak only qualified for the first time the year prior to winning where he lost round 1, both times as a low seed. They also had weak/midcarder early brackets and alliances. Their legacies were reasons they had fans before, but not a factor that would save them. We've seen time and time again how iconic or important a character is doesn't transfer to how well they will perform. You gave the argument Recette only won for being an underdog more support.
>I think a Recette equivalent would be something more like if Ms. Bellum won Ms. /co/.
Ms. Bellum is a character from a widely beloved cartoon that still gets regular threads to this day. Recette is a character from a obscure game that was irrelevant on her board by the time she won. Yeah, Recette is a main character instead of a secondary, but that isn't much of a factor when you consider the popularity difference.

Or maybe some people actually liked her game for being fun and comfy and wanted her to win.

Recette is by far the lowest seed to win a tournament, and will probably remain that way for a long time. It's inherently more controversial, but more of an achievement at the same time. I'm sorry to all the poor starving mid- and high-seed supporters that a low seed won one (1) time. But this mentality that an underdog should only win if they have enough credentials to somehow make up for their relative obscurity, be it through influence or whatever, just makes them less of an actual underdog. Top dog supporters are not the only ones participating in these tournaments, and for those that tend to support less popular picks seeing that under certain circumstances a low seed can make it too just from having a well-liked game and a campaign is exciting.

The pantheon doesn't have to consist of predictable popular characters. If someone "stands out", good. That means their victory is more memorable and more of an achievement. Barely anyone talks about Midna's victory because she was #1 seed, but people still talk about Recette's victory.

Actual BSfags do care about Touhou. The game is inspired partly by KKHTA, the creator is a Koishischizo, has his own edgy 2hu video series and Alice Margatroid even appears BS2. The problem is with bandwagoners who want to vote for le funny Alice meme, while they played neither BS nor 2hu.

Mario at least deserves better than to be seen as just a bland mascot pick. While he does play the straight man in most cases, he's proven to be a really damn good one. I've compared him positively to Popeye in the past. I wouldn't call Popeye a deep character, but he's still a really likable and endearing one at the same time. Charles obviously gave a legendary portrayal over a quarter of a century, but even then there's other material to pull off. Mario is just a nice guy who can mold into many scenarios, which adds up to a surprisingly versatile hero candidate here.

Like Emperor might as well be honorary /v/ because his influence on the board and games in general is not to be dismissed, and he himself has appeared at least in a gacha game which makes him somewhat eligible to enter.

Raiden deserves better after what happened last year. He's got a good character arc of learning to become his own person instead of just constantly idolizing his heroes, while also coming to grips with the darker shades of his past. Both MGS2 and MGR are classics that are still worth playing, so I hope he makes it back in this year. I also got the Big Boss rank in MGS2 on E-Extreme and S ranked every fight in MGR on Revengeance difficulty so that's how dedicated I am to him.

Kiryu is a really cool character and it sucks that he's pretty silent because he's got a lot of potential for a fun campaign. He's pretty variable in his own series, being able to work in many different scenarios without feeling off-putting. I also like his willingness to always stand up for what's important to him and he'll push through any situation if it means ensuring the happiness of those he cares about. I also just fucking love Yakuza a lot and think they're really fun games to chill out and mess around in. 1, 2, and 5 are supremely comfy to play in December.

The sudden evidently personal nature of his departure is concerning. He was a nice guy and a reliable mainstay. Also the one that was meant to take over for /v/. Hope he's doing alright in real life.

Seems like people are talking about putting up a nomination character limit to stop people from voting in "literal whos".
What do you guys think about that?

Gay. It's just nominations, although admittedly people are probably more likely to vote for something if it doesn't have 70 nominations.

People do this every year. It's a pointless rule since Qualifiers already filters literal whos

Wait a minute. There was a literal cuckhold character that was nominated last year, and he only got like 80 +votes.
That character could've been use to shit up the tournament by 'teens but nothing happened. Why are we worried about CyberJobe again?

I'd make something but frankly I'm burnt out, I'll just do whatever I feel like. Especially very burnt out from last year when I made the Scout RPGM game and amongst other things.
