I’m pretty sure that 90% of the reason SU beat MD last year wasn’t a direct dunk on MD. It’s just that SU is more well known and had a wider unironic following. MD is legit a circlejerk that has very little weight outside it’s general.

K-Pop Demon Hunters keeps getting brought up but the board interest seems very low.

“As I get older, the comic reading community leaves me more and more unsettled. As a kid, I thought reading superhero stories as an adult was just the same as reading any other fiction. Fun entertainment, conversation pieces, nothing much more than that. But when I see the way grown adults are treating the material, it feels more like arrested development. It’s like the “it’s real to ME” professional wrestling fan. And these man babies don’t just become gatekeepers to the fandom, they build this sense of entitlement to the creative process. In their minds, there are no more creators, just caretakers of their headcanons. “Make the thing that makes me feel safe and secure”.

And there are strong parallels between this attitude- this sense of entitlement to comfort above all else- and what attracts people to fascism. To support fascism is to reject a complex world, put on blinders, and insist on a simple version of the world that you feel will make you more comfortable within your bubble. That sounds like Comicgate, but it also sounds like MCU stans yelling at the rest of cinema for not embracing Marvel movies and worshipping at their altar. The whole conceit of this sub was supposed to be that online comic book spaces are a hellscape, and this is a space where we can safely take the piss out of it and actually be some normal adults about comics. We’re a part of a creepy community…“

The one thing with Mr /co/ in particular is there is so much involved being among the most prominent characters in your series and the legacy stigma that is hard to overturn for casual viewers. That has happened before and even being the standout highlight character of new adaptions does not seem to do much in most cases. Buford being down the character roster order and not being a high contender before would need to be overcome
For Mr /co/ it’s going to be Doof, and going by history Perry and Ferb might get in. Buford would be surprising

I mean, the winner of villains was capeshit, from the same company as Spider-Man at that. I made the point where even setting aside capes, there's plenty of action and adventure cartoons that fit the theme better.

Winning is seen as a big deal and payoff for lesser likely characters and can even effect the jobber status or whatever of that character. If it’s not to be taken serious negatively then it shouldn’t mean much positively either.

Well yeah, I'm not one to give /tnt/ winners much importance either way. I see some go on about "campooner culture", and they do have a point when it comes to 4chan, but aren't the tourneys held here the one time this attitude is justifiable? /tnt/ tournament threads ARE a glorified RP chatroom consisting of around 10 people. I think it's way more unhealthy to try and force a vision of them operating under the same standards the actual tournaments do.

I think the right ground is giving reward to good campaigners by having them place high, but not win the whole thing. Like it was cool AASD got finals but I still went Shaggy and Scoob cause it just felt more right. Glamgals and Torres were cases of going too far and it looks awkward in hindsight.

You're not owed a victory because of your big campaign for your literal who or super popular powerhouse, especially during an opinion-oriented tournament in a mongolian basketweaving forum inhabited by gay furries or the like. Campaigns could boost your character, but what guarantee do you have that it will convince everyone to be on your side if they have their own picks to vouch for? How effective it is depends a lot in circumstances. If you campaign for a literal who, it's not going to be very effective. If you campaign for someone who has the chances, why should a win be discouraged? According to your logic they should never win because it was campaigned.

How's this a logical response to "character who has chances"? If there's a chance, there's implicit support, with or without a campaign. So you go and spitevote a campaign just because you didn't like it was campaigned even though the character has legitimate support behind it? They can both play into the "NSA robbed us we deserve a win angle" that Fang and Frankie saw success with, especially Raven who's arguably been robbed by both Spinel in 2019 and NSA in 2023. Not to mention they appeal to the nostalgia block since this is the big Eight E8 year and both Raven and Toph were the initial front runners and favorites to win in 2018.

No one is saying Daffy is “last chance” or whatever since basically anyone can win Mr and be good, and favorites usually don’t ever win. Alright, last thing I'm gonna bother you guys with for now, but I also need some help identifying some characters in the Mr. /co/lympus 2023 map.
I think the skull is Tak from Tak and the Power of Juju, and the snake Rattlesnake Jake from Rango, but I'd like a second opinion.
Also, are the dog and the bird meant to be characters? There's a rat somewhere in the map, and I assumed that was remy from Ratatouille, but I might be wrong there. Or I was right, and these other animals are also references to characters like Mordecai or Mr. Peabody.
I also recognize the Eddsworld style, but I don't know what character that is.

I mean it KINDA exists, albeit highly niche and dependent. Omni-Man only narrowly made it in last year thanks to his battle against Bardock. His polling icon wasn't even from his actual material, it was from the DB.
No way in hell it's boosting somebody like Kyle to qualifying range, but I anticipate Wille getting some good use out of his win on the show since he beat previous /co/lympius champion Tom. I'll also make an educated guess and say that Godzilla's upcoming outing on the show will be what helps him barely qualify again this year so he can waste a slot and unceremoniously loses to a top seed in R1

American animation is centered around riggers. They have holidays off for riggers. They fired hundreds of thousands of artists to accommodate riggers. They listen to rigger tutorials. They sketch and animate like riggers. They draw the entirety of modern animation from riggers. They post cartoon gifs made by riggers. They consoom products in worship of riggers. Their biggest event of the year involves posting memes in honor of riggers winning awards. They use rigger slang like "t-posing". When you say "Faust" they're not thinking of the man who sold his soul to the devil. They're thinking of the rigger and her horse show. Their studios are completely overrun with riggers. They worship their global animation force disproportionately filled with riggers and their ZOGbot propaganda force filled with riggers. They worship riggers like Justin Roiland and Vivziepop and the late Monty Oum while attacking the artists who actually built their industry before riggers took over. Their movies are animated by riggers and their music videos are outsourced to korean riggers. They send riggers to the Kids' Choice Awards and celebrate when the riggers win because those riggers are true red blooded corporate riggers. They watch rigger porn to a point where "Blender" does not make them think of a kitchen appliance but about a 3D rigger software instead. They will tell you how much they are just pretending to love riggers but the evidence speaks for itself in that American animation will forever be an industry of rigger loving riggers.

On the brightside, hey Patrick will finally be able to compete this year. He's been on of the very few characters suck in 3-ruled limbo for a good while

I have.
The voice acting outside of Hank and Bobby just sounds so tired given how everyone has aged (Futurama had the same problem). The new replacements for the Asian characters are terrible while Huss and Hardwick get a pass.
The writing is all over the place. Some episodes have the charm of the original while you have shit like the Andrew Tate episode that reek of modern Californian writing. And mind you that's after getting through the Static Cling shit in the beginning.
Ultimately it's a mixed that bag that sums up to mid when put together. Like many revivals it is simply something that didn't need to exist.

Well except for against Hank, if I had gotten my way he'd have won in 2019 or 2021 and I wouldn't be coping right now about the reboot totally not tanking his chances.
I agree voice acting definitely carries some characters though, like Aqua Teen Hunger Force in general wouldn't be nearly as funny without those specific VAs fitting the characters perfectly.

Blonde girl next to Amelia Bedelia is probably Amelia McBride from Amelia Rules, their shared name being probably the reason they're together.
The one on the other side of the phone is probably Coral from the Goldfish Crackers animations, considering the other Goldfish is there too.
The girl on the left of C2 is Aisling from The Secret of Kells, no idea who's next to her.

The fact we're talking about it in this thread is a sign people will talk about it in the Mr. /co/ threads. Alot of getting votes isn't convincing, it's reminding. That and appearing to be big/have momentum so people think voting for your character isn't a waste.
It's not that there'll be a notable increase in homestuck fans participating in the tournament persae, it's moreso that more homestuck sleeper-cells will awaken in tournament goers. >The newest fandoms seem belligerently arrogant about themselves.
I noticed this too, they seem unable or unwilling to comprehend that people are getting annoyed by their behavior. You saw it with the tournaments with MD, where after devastating losses they convinced themselves that they were actually beloved and built a ton of goodwill with the voterbase, only to lose harder to even weaker opponents the next year. At that point they convinced themselves everyone who disliked them was a single person so there was no introspection to be found.

The same thing has been happening with deltarune lately. The fanbase is getting more and more belligerent and spammy. And any pushback is swarmed with replies like “you’re just a hater let us have fun we are just smol beans”. Just look at the wplace drama, they just copy paste the same sprites everywhere and use them to deface actually drawn pixel art including memorials. Any kind of pushback gets the “OH SO WE ARE BAD BECAUSE WE LIKE TO DRAW?!?” response. Unwilling or unable to understand that it’s the sheer amount of spam and disregard for everyone else that makes people hate them, not the fact that they like deltarune.

Is it just an age thing? Is it how the new generation has been raised? I’d unironically love to see a professional study on this.

Coupled with the hype around his long awaited appearance on Death Battle, will this be enough to get him in? Would be kind of funny if he made it in instead of Hal.

Mr. comes close tbh with maybe like 10-15 exceptions. Ms. it would be impossible you would struggle to get a bracket of 16 that would be all considered good or great by the everyone.

So I've been sorting through Ms. /co/ nomination data because I wanted to run analytics, but I figured I should ask if someone's done this before before spending a whole bunch of time trying to match the correct character names/series. I didn't see any such thing on the wiki, which is what got me to start this. Also last tournament I noticed there was an issue with several characters being listed twice in the nomination poll. Since outside of newly eligible characters the nomination list is usually similar, it'd be pretty easy to have a script cross reference some "canonical" list to check for matches

The duplicate nominations last year were due to user error. I asked to be included on the 'proofreading' since then. My previous job included a lot of tedious but accuracy-dependent Excel wrangling. (You don't want to be the guy who has to tell a ship of 3,000 people they have to miss a port visit because you made a copy/paste error). Here's a screenshot of last year's tally sheet. The organizers have nothing to do with this one, it's just so I can make sure I'm giving out accurate numbers during the shows.

>The duplicate nominations last year were due to user error
User error of the program they use to scrape the nominations from the thread? Is that program publicly available by the way?

Also so what I'm trying to get/make is a combination of the nomination voting data from all the years (though I couldn't find 2018's). I have all the votes from 2019-2024 in a csv file, but the issue is between years there's a lot slight differences in character/series names, and it's taking a while to merge them correctly.

This wouldn’t be as much of an issue if people didn’t nominate a gorillion extra pointless characters btw.

Yes to the first. There were some very similarly named individuals that were overlooked being entered twice. I had assumed a certain kind of scan of the document had been done, and put my okay on it; it wasn't until after that I found out. No, it's not publicly available. The actual organizers can correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC, the program they utilize was originally made by Stats (RIP?) with the knowledge passed down since then. I've never had, nor asked for access to it. I know that Spideranon possesses a similar (likely superior, pun only partially intended) grasp of how to run an information scraper, as he showed with his mind-boggling infometrics.

The gorillion extra characters is why I'm interested in the qualifying round data in the first place. It gives a wider (and I'd argue more accurate) representation of /co/'s tastes than the bracket data
