These are the winners that have basically no presence beyond being on the champion list. There’s a conventional universality to them on the board plus being straightforward utterly uncontroversial in how they won that just doesn’t lend any comment.
It’s only been a year but Frankie seems to be the same. Mado as well, but that also might do with how like 4-5 other girls eclipsed her as center of attention last year for various negative reasons and pretty much everyone still talks about them.

FOTM is fine and can lead to unique and fun campaigns in the moment, the problem is if FOTM is ALL you have. Shadow relied on the FOTM of “Year of Shadow” and the popular notion that a lot of votes came from /sthg/. Him all but dying in popularity on /v/ after King just made it worse. You just campaign for favorites and an agreeable pick wins, no big analysis for years afterwards. It’s fun and simple and is also the biggest of all the tournaments while also managing getting the least amount of off season and metafag attention. Queen 2022 and 2023 (pre grand finale) are the peak comfy yet highly engaged standard to me.
It’s peculiar to me how /v/ is always defined by King when Queen exist and functions like Mr. /co/. Strawman funposter likes to use Mr. as some big negative contrary example to King’s nature but Queen is right there.

Donkey Kong might get a slight boost. His main issue is discourse around the new design, but I could see Bananza outweighing that. It's the first time DK's gotten a new game since King began, and this one helps to highlight why he was so fun in the first place.

Pauline depends. Don't think she's beating the big three from Mario, but I could see her now getting in as a Donkey Kong character instead. Still, don't see her going that far. Maybe one or two wins, but a deep run would shock me. People seem to like her Bananza portrayal, but Donkey Kong and King K. Rool are going to likely get more love from it.

The more notable discrepancies are the porn tourneys (you can’t really argue it’s about better characters there, it’s just straight up gayness) and how massively much more attention king has always gotten compared to queen (literally almost no discussion at all despite being the biggest tourney on the main site).

Did you ever hear
that old tale?
Yes, the old tale,
based upon the
prophecy...

Lord of the Hammer.

Chapter 1
The March of
the Dark Senator.
The heroes defeat
the Senator and
stop the Metroids.

Chapter 2
The City of
the Banging.
The heroes do
battle in Motorcycles
to save the Maiden.

Chapter 3, The
Isles of
White light.
The heroes travel
among the zones
and catch a glimpse
of a lost shop.

Chapter 4, The
Duels of the
Jumping Jacks.
A great Jack gives
the heroes a
fuckable imp.

Chapter 5, The
Field of Grimm
and Curls.
The vast tournament is
charred in an inferno
of rape.

...What happens next?

Geheheh! Who knows?

There was only one more
chapter... After that,
It all stopped.

That next tourney, it
never did get held.

The ballot, it became so
grand, so overwhelming,

Some say it swallowed up
the hosts themselves.

The ones who could write
the next, the youth,
the Google Forum was lying
there for them to
pick up.

To make the next tournament.

...they never did.

But you, my dear?

I see a tourney lit
up in your eyes...
Burnin' bright...
Burnin' black.
Burnin' up
everything.

The bell's ringin' now.
Seems we've reached
the final rounds.

So... how do you
think it all ends?

No, how do you want
it to end?

For /v/? I'd say Garland, although Grimm has a solid case as well. I feel they're both very fitting and unique winners to the board who should have won even without their campaigning.

It's a toss-up whether I'd put Batter or Shadow higher if we're just talking the characters, but I do certainly like both. If anything, I've grown more weary of Shadow as a meta pick compared to the actual character and feel he'll be tolerated more once we're another couple winners in. He definitely got his push primarily because of lucky timing, but I do think he's far from the worst possible winner we could have gotten. Shadow was also getting some campaigning material in 2023, despite him having the misfortune of facing the Rayman campaign first round. He would have likely gotten some positive buzz in 2024 if that kept up without Shadow Generations or the Year of Shadow existing.

Because it's boring. King threads have had almost to do with the celebration of gaming for a long time, it's an embarassment that Queen, the GIRL tournament does this better. For all of Queen's complaints, pretty much every finale pair barring possibly Recette vs Mado was spot-on. How are Batter vs Eggman, Jack Frost vs Jack Garland, or Shadow vs JC Denton anyway good finales, when one contestant out of each of them so clearly "off"? (Grimm is alright as himself, he's hated because of Batter resentment, Eggman's double loss, and rigging. He makes sense in isolation.)
Average King thread:

It's not even good shit post material anymore, King is too repetitive, too infrequent, and too high effort. At least Death Battle or /dbs/ is always around, and expects nothing out of you. It is strictly shilling and drama farming now. Make sure to buy your ticket to see Sonic 3 in theaters, epic /v/ gamers! If King doesn't have some big paradigm shift this year, like Ms /co/ did last, I say just cancel it entirely. It only makes discussion around the other, better tournaments worse, because King drama seeps into them.

I don't get why Garland is always singled out here when he is a very fitting winner despite the FOTM timing. He's way more in line with someone like Armstrong. Stranger of Paradise is a /v/ classic now and people still make threads about the game even three years later. I saw a thread about it yesterday.

Going off of this, I also think Grimm is a pretty good winner. He's a good example of an underdog winner because the odds are definitely against him but he still is a very /v/ winner considering the nature of his game and /v/ being one of the few places that constantly talks about it. It's Batter and Shadow which I feel are off, and Shadow is a much bigger offender here. Batter is weird but people like him and his game even if Eggman is a better winner. Shadow is the most instant regret I've seen out of any tournament winner and people were trying to prevent it even before it was all over.

There has never been a legitimate King winner.

>Armstrong
First winner because the first tournament had the least amount of anons voting, meaning that he doesn't accurately reflect /v/'s taste. If Armstrong was still competing, he'd be a jobber.
>Dante
FOTM due to DMC5 Special Edition being fresh on people's minds
>Batter
Heat of the moment winner to "avenge" Madotsuki's unexpected loss that year
>Garland
FOTM
>Grimm
Discord gigarigs
>Shadow

It will happen again this year and the following years.

(some) people here went from bashing him to being overly defensive and singling him out among the other four controversial winners, when he by far is the character that gets brought up the least in any sort of fashion by King voters; one can tell everyone else has something resembling an active fanbase, although I guess that's something left to be seen in Shadow's case.

Bazz was probably part of the issue, since it seemed a couple of particular shitters latched onto Hex after Bazz lost. Still, Bazz was bad as a conventional candidate, but anons got their fun before she died quick in Round 1 like was destined to happen.

Miku's only real serious impact was wasting Felicia's momentum. You can argue all day about her being in Elite Eight, but she got voted up before an unceremonious loss to Mado in quarterfinals. She didn't even get voted 8th, much as I feel bad for Tifa. I don't think people are going to care that much about Miku's placement in retrospect unless she gets a big comeback year where a win is in actual conversation.

Nah, most likely not. It was mostly a handful of purists who were getting pissy over Miku not being a true video game character. Felicia was the anti-thesis to that, and there were posts that had her over Miku in a "better Elite Eight line-up". Didn't seem like it had anything to do with Felicia's supporters being salty, however, more than her just being the main character to push over Miku for anons who despised her getting so far.

Main reason I even pointed out Felicia was that she was one of the only characters on Miku's part of the bracket getting any campaigning effort what I recall, and looking back over it now seems I'm mostly right. I know Aigis got some attention despite losing to Felicia the prior round to the Miku match and Etna least got brought up some before losing to Miku in the third round. Still, I don't think either one had the same genuine effort or hype that Felicia got. Miku didn't really have a big match until her, and I feel whoever won that part of the bracket was going to lose to Mado. The only loss was thus Felicia not getting to enjoy elite honors over Miku.

Pomni made E8 in Ms. /co/ while her show is still going. There’s the chance people have entertained that TADC could shit the bed and suck later on, hence making a potential win age poorly or make it so she never performs well again. The same argument could go for Deltarune since it’s also not a completed game.
