I have a hard time seeing that. Samus, Midna, and Curly are all really well received. Reimu is somewhat controversial for being part of Touhou, but a lot of people consider her a compromise, sometihng as big as 2hu on 4chan will win sooner rather than later. Even Recette, the oddball pick might turn around seeing as how little people care about the one pedofag now.

It's really hard to go into the hypothetical specifics of what a *pure* popularity variation of our tournaments would have been like, that is, one without taking any campaigning or thread activity into account. I don't disagree with Recette being a low card, but in a similar vein to what you are saying, a lot of anons last year commented Eggman wouldn't have reached E8 had it not been for Hexanon's campaigning since the beginning. Now, does that make him less of high card?
Do you think Amaterasu could have made finals without her main drawfag? What about the winner of Qo/v/ Curly herself, or the rest of the E8? Bayonetta certainly wouldn’t have gotten so far without NSA supporting her. Malon barely got any attention before last year, but the mere effort of a single anon posting about her managed to make her rank 5th place. The list goes on.
There are actually a lot of characters, arguably very iconic ones, which at some point reached high positions because they had people backing them up, but no longer do so simply due to lack of momentum and fiery support *cough cough* TIFA *cough cough*.
I think the inherent format of the tournaments makes it so the manifestation of this dynamic inevitable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

It's not about evaluation. Anons don't pull up a list of qualities and meta factors they have to checkmark everytime they want to vote for someone. When a character has nobody backing them up, or alternatively, simply isn't recipient to OC people find fun, they go unnoticed. People don't look at campaigning and OC simply for the sake of it, but because it's an engaging experience.

In fairness, that felt like a fluke. She's seeded higher in the past and had proven results behind her as well. Recette was truly an one-hit wonder and managed to nab the win during her golden run.

I'm still alright with Recette was a winner, but I will say that she's remained controversial with four other winners in her tournament that are all generally agreed upon to be worthwhile queens. Compare that to the Batter, who had his reception drop in relation to the next two kings. He still ranks better overall too from what I've seen lately. Recette's scenario is akin to what it would be like if one of the Mr. /co/ winners had serious criticism behind them. The worst criticism I've generally seen there is Tom being too unremarkable or quiet.

Oh yeah, I think there's been a collective regret between the two. Just saying that Recette has an easy out to be given the pass and still gets criticism, while there's actual lingering effects that can be criticized towards the Batter.

While we're on the subject, I also want to point out that the Batter felt like he had almost every card fall right on his bracket. While Recette also got real lucky, she at least took out a few big hitters on her way to the finals. Her close win against Jill is what really propelled her after all. I would argue every Batter opponent prior to Eggman had at least one serious flaw to exploit aside from maybe Isaac, but pretty sure his campaigning didn't really start until the following tournament. Eggman had a truly challenging bracket on the other hand, which really shows just how much the Batter was carried by the alliance arc and his high attention match against Spamton. Still an impressive effort to become the tournament's effective protagonist, but he's easily one of the luckiest winners in a major tournament to date.
