Here's something you might not have known: Coins don't need to be round! Round is simply the most popular shape, because round wears evenly. Coins have been made in other shapes, one of the most coveted Gold commemorative coins ever made has an octagonal variant as an example:

The only rules to be a "coin" is

And that's it. Shape doesn't matter and size doesn't matter. But who made it DOES matter very much. If you get some kind of vidya or movie box set and it says "Includes collectable coin" they're full of shit and so is the dictionary's term on coins. A coin is only ever truly a "coin" when it's minted, milled or cast by a state. The Monnaie de Paris is the oldest manufacturing business in the world, operating since 864 and still making coinage.
