Alright I take it back, Gold did nothing wrong. I prefer silver because it generally has a lot more history, politics and craftsmanship involved while gold is generally "really rich guy metal". but it's not like neat stuff hasn't happened with gold before. In 1933, FDR made Gold illegal and it stayed illegal for 39 years. He gets a ton of shit for it, but Richard Nixon was actually the one to make gold legal for citizens to own again. Only the federal reserve could legally stockpile gold, de-pegging the dollar from the "gold standard" (which has literally never been a true standard, in fact silver was the basis for the dollar from 1785. The US couldn't hold onto gold long enough to make it the monetary standard)
Coin collecting got a big start as a way for people to keep "illegal" gold, it was a loophole. Granted, you'd get busted if you only held large amounts heavily circulated eagles and double eagles. But so long as you set aside coins of nice condition, rare mintmarks, and tried to collect sets, it'd be legal. Ironically, this illegal way of hoarding gold actually got tons of people interested in actual legitimate coin collecting, in the 60's and 70's US mint proof sets regularly sold into the millions.
The US mint is also the only profitable part of the US government. I'm not even joking.

Season 1 is fine and the most fun parts are the shenanigans between the dolls but it's got some decent serious sections too, Season 2 is also fine for the less serious stuff but it meanders a bit too much. It is an /a/ classic however. Rewatched it recently and found myself liking it a lot more than I remember.
The 2013 show is by a different studio and follows closer to the manga, with some pacing issues due to trying to fit in everything it could. Just read the manga instead if you're going for that. Did you know that it's a seinen btw? I thought that was interesting.
