they belong more so on a /x/-style tournaments rather than an /an/ one. They mostly stem from folklore and cryptozoology, so they don't really belong on /an/. -Submission must be /an/-related or or have appeared in a /an/ tournament prior to this rule (Grandfather Clause)
-Organism must at least be somewhat autonomous to be eligible. (Needs to grow and reproduce, need food, water, and air, move and respond or adapt to their environment)
-The previous winner (Crow) and previous year E8 members are ineligible
-All organisms must be known to exist for at least one month (FOTM rule)
-Organisms cannot be Board-Tan, OC Donut Steels or anything fictional like Pokémon or Audrey II
-It is not required, but it is recommended that you nominate general species instead of specific members (People are more likely to vote for "Crocodiles" instead of "Black Caiman")
-In the event of several human or human-like organisms are flooding the qualifiers, only the 3 with the most votes will be allowed in.

As I previously said, I will be hosting a possibly smaller side tournament for Natural Phenomena during the /an/lympics, since living things aren't the only things that are part of nature.
Here are the rules that I came up with:

- Anything that is part of nature is allowed; geographical formations, weather, types of stone, elements, space objects, scientific laws, etc.
- Organisms that can enter the main tournament are not allowed
- Things that are created by animals or man-made, such as a nest or a dam, are also not allowed, as it encroaches on the main tournament.

Any questions or thoughts?

Sharks were in the elite 8. So they're not allowed like Gorillas, Tyrannosaurus Rexi and every other elite 8 member. I'm not seeing the problem you guys are seeing.
I guess you could make an argument for different variations like the mackerel sharks but that feels kind of like Smurfing to get around the Elite 8 ban.
If the people want just the great white restricted then I can budge but I thought everyone sorta knew this going in.

Gorillas, Orangutans and Mantis Shimp sitting out doesn't mean that Chimpanzees and Regular Shrimp that you can buy fried in the supermarket are sitting out too
Granted that I may be missing something, but are there really any noticeable enough differences within Sharks and The Giant Pacific Octopus to justify giving clearance?

There's no end to the variations of different species. If someone wants to give the hammerhead specifically some love, I don't think that should be blocked by the broad category of "sharks" being in the Elite 8, and I think if a particular species of crow had won instead, the subsequent entry of a different species of crow would be virtually the same as entering a particular species of crow now.

Ultimately I think what you're trying to prevent, the remote possibility of a similar entrant doing about as well consecutively, isn't worth discarding entire categories that contain animals (or plants) that are still distinct and whose participation people would still enjoy. If you choose to do that, it should be at least be a lot more precise, but good luck trying to manage that when crows and ravens share a genus but everything classified as a shark doesn't even share an order. Your options here are either too broad or too precise, but there's no indication that either option is even worth the trouble.

Personally I think there should be some major, imminent, and credible threat before we start rulefagging against valid entries, rather than preemptively try to rigidly apply rules from other types of tournaments that may not even make sense here. The rules of tournaments don't handle categories of characters winning because that's not a thing that can actually happen in them. In the /an/lympics, we'd have to have been specific to the species from the very beginning to apply those rules without adjustment. Some consideration has to be taken here in regard to the nature (heh) of this specific tournament and what the participants want out of it.

TL;DR there's no real benefit to overregulating entrants and it actively makes things less fun.

We don't know how long tourneys will last and that goes double for /an/, which is largely a side thing being kept alive by a given host's enthusiasm. It seems like a waste to have animals of a same class or a thematic group like prehistorics win two years at this point. Three-ways are great in bigger tourneys because they potentially let a campaigned character stay in the running for one extra round and potentially proceed, beating the odds against not one, but two other opponents. But on /an/, eh... It's small and half the picks there don't even get campaigning. The four-way was underwhelming because none of those picks were being campaigned for (except for apparently the chicken now)

If the main defining trait this tournament had is having three-ways and ties then the host must feel really good to be a cock-sucking faggot. Regardless if they actually did or are faking it, it's the same reason, because people have made drama one of the focus points of tournament and they want things to be endless drama that they get off of. They enjoy "chaos", trying to trash on hosts, trying to piss people off and make everything seem illegitimate.
This has been brought up many times as an legitimate issue but keeps getting brushed off because it isn't "fun" to say so. NSA was the scapegoat and rightfully so, but this isn't going to end because she's gone. This is going to keep going because you all made this type of funposting an accepted part of tournaments, and this might be the first time you all realize that.

Let me get this out of the way: NSA didn't actually care about rigging, she cared about HER characters getting rigged out on one hand, and characters she didn't like being rigged, on the other. Yeah, this seems likely looking at King 2022. I think there's actual signs that the Jack-off might have been rigged to happen, even if it mainly benefited Frost instead of Garland. Wouldn't be surprised if NSA just didn't give a shit, especially when she was obsessed with Wesker losing and likely thought in vain that AM losing by even more votes would make him look worse to voters. Funnily enough, the mere fact she couldn't keep her mouth shut both made this less likely to happen AND tainted Wesker's tournament reception.

I would say AM is not really game material. He has a nice book and comic but he's not a deserving vidya crown owner. I could say Dante and Armstrong are solid material since their games have been /v/ classics for some time but IHNMAIMS was only a footnote compared to other contestants in the tourneys. As for Wesker, not much people care for him outside of Leon, Chris, Jill, Ada etc... these days and a RE queen winner is much more preferable. The Batter win still irks me til this day since OFF wasn't that important to /v/ outside of Undertale which is an Earthbound rip off of itself which had characters who are more deserving. I want characters that come from legacy games and have done more to change the industry or ones that have interesting arcs to say the least.

>I would say AM is not really game material. He has a nice book and comic but he's not a deserving vidya crown owner.
My thoughts exactly. It's really not a matter of what vidya has adapted, even if it's kino or well-made it's about what vidya has made. It's about being vidya to begin with. I think the monologue is fun, the aesthetic is neat, and he generally gets great OC. But it feels so out of place to have something undeniably a book first and only called an adaptation by both the author and game publishers.
Plus the argument for AM"s inclusion of being "I really like the adaptation" and "it adds to the original story" is flimsy as fuck. I mean, that makes Spongebob Squarepants (Battle for Bikini bottom), Batman (The Arkham games) Dragon Ball (the absolute shitload of Dragon Ball video games) and Samurai Jack (Genndy actually retconned the awful Samurai jack ending for the Battle of time video game, so it's pretty significant to his story) video games. Spongebob, Batman, Dragon Ball and Samurai Jack are not video games. The only reason he would get away with it is either NSA's blatant ignorance on what is and isn't vidya (she didn't even know Megaman X is a completely different character from the largely silent Megaman/Rock, she also thought fucking Lain was a video game) or hosting favoritism.

That was Ball's take on it (I remember him mentioning it once in a qualifiers thread)
the way I see it there's only one chance for a paradigm shift and it's this year:
Either Nightshift is gone, and her dumb and inconsistent rules go with her and it's from then-on ONLY video games. No more exceptions, no more clauses, no more bickering. Keep it simple and consistent.
Or we embrace the chaos and just let anything with a convincing enough argument get it. We get Tony Soprano vs Mario and Ronald Mcdonald vs Batman and it's kino. It's just ten days of pure chaos, that happens to be hosted on /v/
Really either is fine by me, I only hate compromise and in-betweens which is what we have now. SOME e-celebs, SOME real people, SOME books. Bullshit.

Well, wasn't Dracula public domain when it got adapted into a video game?
That seems like a pretty acceptable criteria, because public domain means anybody can make completely transformative takes on the basic concept. It's a lot different from "We paid the movie studio/author for a license and have to follow this contract of what we can and can't portray in the game".
Also this makes Steamboat willie vidya if someone went and did in fact make a game out of it, kek

I have to wonder how characters from "/v/ adaptations of /co/ adaptations of public domain material" are handled even if that description could only apply to very few characters. Soviet Treasure Island had a game adaptation that Dr. Livesey appears in, but Livesey is already a character in the public domain story and not something the Soviet Union invented for the film. Does his public domain status mean he's eligible for /v/ regardless of his /co/ appearance or does it have to be a vidya-specific version of Livesey similar to Dracula?

/co/ is different, a staggering amount of cartoons are adaptations of books and such. Plus /co/ is way more lenient, /co/ is comics AND cartoons which is an absolutely enormous berth of media. /v/ is (well SUPPOSED to be, clean up the damn AI threads jannies) just video games, little fun programs you play on a computer or game console

The way I at least see it, AM winning would be more like if Brisby from Secret of NIMH won Ms. /co/. Both characters are only technically /lit/ because they originate from books (and neither falling into public domain), but they mostly owe their iconicity and are recognizable thanks to their respective adaptations to a different medium, and thus perceived to be fitting to the board tournaments in question.

Still doesn't make Undertale a copycat of Earthbound, when the most it directly takes from it are visual cues and tonal approach. Do you know what series can actually be argued to have had a big impact on Undertale's game mechanics and identity? Shin Megami Tensei. And in a similar vein to this, Toby reprises some metatextual ideas in UT and DT he most likley got from his time working with Hussie (not thematically though, Undertale has fuck all to do with Homestuck in terms of themes).

The original IHNMAIMS is not a novel, it's a short story with not even that much "story" going on, mostly descriptions. The game expands on that basic plot with a ton of detail and characterization. It adds way more to the story than any of your examples, so it's definitely not just your run-of-the-mill adaptation. Add to that the fact the author was involved in the game's creation. It's a pretty unique case of an adaptation that warrants being considered on its own in a /v/ tourney.

Also, I'm not even a Genndy dickrider but I like the SJ ending. It's not satisfying and that's the point. Going back to the past was always going to end in problems, you can't always have your cake and eat it too.

NTA but... yes? Men in Black might have been a comic first but most people recognize it for the film series. I imagine a hypothetical /tv/ tournament in particular would admit a lot of characters from adaptational media.
As for AM, its pretty understandable why people would argue he is more of a videogame character than a literature one because most of the actual y'know, characterization, is found in the game.

Arguments over character qualification are a bore. I think there’s way too much technicality autism. /co/ doesn’t have nearly as much debate about this cause I think it’s more of just a common sense ruling. Basically it should be:
Is the character defined by said medium, basically are they more prominent, expansive, and associated as that medium? Then they’re allowed and it’d be autism to dissallow them.

Even that is messy. I remember a ton of arguments for Christopher Robin saying the baseball flash defined Winnie the Pooh on 4chan.
The most concrete thing I can think of is "media origin of intent". Chicken little the video game DID release slightly before the film, but Disney's Chicken little was obviously intended to be a film. I think Sonic the hedgehog might've technically gotten a quick little reference in an anime just before the game came out but Sonic is obviously a video game franchise, if you try to talk about anything Sonic on /a/ besides maybe the OVA they'll boot you out

I think arguments like that can actually be shot down pretty easily. Christopher Robin might be a meme on 4chan largely thanks to a baseball flash game, but nobody associates him more with videogames than animation. People strictly don't think of Christopher Robin as a videogame character.

No, Serial Experiments Lain was conceived to be a multimedia project. The scenario for the videogame was written first, and it was produced concurrently to the anime series, even though it was released a few months after the anime ended.

Of course, it's whack to say Lain should be allowed in Queen of /v/ for this reason because she's universally seen as an anime character above all else, while the game itself is pretty obscure.

Why are some people in such denial about this? When they start citing specific matchups they targeted and point out the bump at the exact same round they started rigging then it’s probably legit. You can make the argument they just want attention, but as they keep saying, rigging is easy. I know from experience it isn’t hard to make a new google account and that these forms don’t take long to fill out at all.

It seems the people who think this is all just nothing default to just saying “nope” instead of actually providing a convincing argument as to why everyone is just faking it.
