Well from the looks of >>195801 and >>195802, you're capable of accurate enough lines. With technology being boss the whole "steady" thing is really no longer mandatory to be able to pull off clean and steady lines. As long as you're able to scan in lines that are thin and accurate enough to use as a guideline there are plenty of programs like Manga Studio that offer vector-based shape/line tools that can help get clean lines in a simple point-and-click manner. Although a tablet would be preferred, a mouse could suffice for this method. Even something small/simple like a Wacom Bamboo could be perfectly sufficient if you prefer to scan in traditional pencils. On that note, >>196896 makes it seem apparent that you at least have some means of working digitally. What kind of hardware/software do you have to work with?

Regardless, maybe try working just on regular printer paper (very affordable compared to art papers) with a very thin mechanical pencil as a sort of practice for steady/clean lines. I still draw in this manner when drawing non-34 images on traditional mediums (AKA stuck in public and I has no money for art papers) with drafting pencils at .03, .05 and .07 lead. Maybe if you even have a nearby store that has them you could try out some non-photo blue pencils (or if not, they're cheap on the interwebs). In case you're unaware, these are pretty much pencils that use a blue color that is not traditionally picked up by scanning/copying/photo hardware. This would let you sketch around as messy as you want with the light blue, try to draw over it with a thin line (a regular mechanical pencil would be sufficient), then scan in the thin lines and try to ink over them digitally. The thin lines done with the pencil do not even have to be overly steady since the only real important point when inking over them with a line tool is that they're accurate. I bring this point up as it can help get over any confidence issues with moving your pencil; even if the lines look a bit squiggly, as long as they accurately get from point A to point B to convey proper proportions, the final line process can take care of the rest.

I cannot think of any better way to describe Gwen's build. I'm not personally turned off by thicker/more developed builds, but seeing developed features on a character like Gwen just lashes at my brain and destroys my overall capacity to enjoy a picture of her.

I actually have a wacom tablet and uses MS5ex and can put out clean lines with undo spam and vectoring but it's time consuming and frankly speaking I rather want to rely on getting better in motor skills and put clean lines on one go.

yeah, I do practice those steady lines exercise and will still do. our largest art supplier doesn't have non-photo blue pencil and ordering online is a hassle due to how our bureau of customs loves overpriced taxing stuff. thanks for the advice.

Well, assuming you're not using a tablet monitor (which most people would say "Cintiq" in that case and not "Wacom"), I'd still maybe stick to the vector options on the digital front. If you DO have a Cintiq, keep practicing with your awesome tablet monitor that's better than mine and makes me totally jealous and ignore what I'm about to say. By vector options I mean give the Curved Line tool a try on a vector layer with Vector Snap on. Also turn on the vector options on your Eraser and set it to delete vector lines to nearest intersect. This just helps clean lines that intersect with minimal effort. Just use the Pen tool at the end to taper lines that need it and you're good to go. This method is what I have used on a lot of my pictures that have a lot going on, simply because it's quick, accurate, and lines stay a consistent width. This is actually the method that a lot of animation companies use for these reasons. If your initial pencils are clean enough to serve as a guide then there should be minimal to no use of the undo command when using the Curved Line tool.

I just feel like saying this because when I first started drawing digitally I had an Intuos 3. I tried to make the jump immediately to doing everything digitally and felt I should just try and develop the coordination to sketch/pencil/line all digitally. Looking back now I regret deciding to go that route, especially now that affordable tablet monitors exist, which can and most likely will completely replace all of that dedicated practice. Paper generally offers a better pace and more precision than a non-display tablet offers unless you have many years of practice using such tablets. Your mileage may vary, however, and you may be one of those people that the traditional tablet just "clicks" with.

In my experience, though, I do not know a single person used to traditional that those types of tablets clicked with. If you find that coordinating with the tablet is causing a headache as far as getting things properly proportioned/placing lines accurately, I feel you'd be doing yourself a favor to stick with traditional on that front and use the tablet to add that digital flare during the final steps (vector lines/colors). I personally wish I stuck with that route, especially now that I've spent enough time with tablet monitors that I've lost any and all motor skills I ever developed during my years with non-display monitors. I feel all that time I spent developing those motor skills could have been better spent drawing more/getting better with a pencil, which is a skill no hardware will out-date.

I'm not a fan of traditional going digital route though, it's faster doing digital from scratch and traditional is only for the looks and texture that digital can't mimic yet. Late response is late but is still a response. For me personally, new to digital or otherwise, I just could never get the same coordination when sketching/penciling with a traditional tablet as I could with pencil/paper. A way that I was always able to show myself this was to try and sketch out something simple like a face that I could draw without reference on my old Intuos 3, and then try to sketch it out on paper. The paper sketch was always much faster, easier to get accurate and thus just looked better in less time. Maybe it's just me, but not being able to directly see what my hand/pencil is doing just made things seem overall too uncoordinated and resulted in far too much undo spam.

Now I'm not trying to say it's not possible to get used to/get good results with an Intuos style tablet. If you're able to sketch as well on an Intuos as you can traditionally then I say go for it. I mainly just wanted to point out from my experience that if you're already capable of getting clean sketches/pencil drawings in a respectable amount of time through traditional means, then spending the time developing the skills to do so with a tablet could very well end up being a lot of lost time spent doing something unnecessary. The thing that matters the most in the end is the final stage that is going to be displayed, so really there is no advantage or disadvantage to doing the preliminary stages in a traditional or digital format (although doing all of the stages digitally does a better job of removing any physical trail when drawing porn...).

Well, if the other continuations have taught anything it's that it could be worse. As long as they keep her original personality intact then I could be okay with this iteration. Some fun could be had with how wide open the legs are on those shorts, and the shirt's not all that bad (hope the cat on the shirt has eyes though). It definitely keeps that tomboy look going, but her face isn't visible enough to make a final call seeing as how that's really the primary deciding factor. The only thing that is REALLY bugging me is that they put her hair clip on the opposite side...Just why?

At the moment I'm keyed into writing but I want to develop my art skills to better create pitch material since I'm not in a position where I can find a reliable partner to do the art parts.

Well, while the market mostly agrees that digital is the way to go for the final product, remember that all steps prior to that do not suffer from a traditional foundation. Whether your layouts/sketches/pencils are done with a stylus in Photoshop, Manga Studio, Paint Shop Pro, Paint Tool Sai, etc, or on a piece of paper with an actual pencil, the final steps will still be done the same way. Heck, even the final lines can be done traditionally with the proper experience; however, unless you have many years of experience inking traditionally, I see no reason to not start digital with it. Whether it be digital or traditional, just stick with whatever is fastest then just use digital get that final look.

It really doesn't matter what kind of tablet you use. My current tablet is an Ugee UG-2150, which at the time I got it couldn't even be bought from US retailers (it was even shipped with a Chinese invoice). Before that I was using an Asus Eee Slate, which really the only problem was the small screen combined with the low resolution. I haven't had a Wacom myself in a very long time. As far as pressure sensitivity, while it does help, the way I draw/color now could easily be done with very minimal sensitivity. Really, if you utilize some of the vector tools (line/curved line/vector eraser tools) I use occasionally you could get by with no pressure sensitivity. As long as there is some level of pressure sensitivity, many programs like Manga Studio have customizable sensitivity preferences that could allow you to customize it to work best for you with what you have. I actually had to do that with my current tablet as the drivers are really poor with Manga Studio, which is one of the few problems I have to deal with using a foreign off-brand device.
