Let me tell you how the world works:
Money.
That's it. That's how the world works. Previously Area had all his pics free. Then he had a patreon set up with higher res content (which I have no problem with: in fact if I ever set one up, it's exactly how I'd do it). Then he put extra pages of a comic exclusively on patreon behind a paywall. Then he is putting up his content weeks ahead on Patreon, and trickle feeds them on his tumblr.

See the slippery slope?

Give it a year and as he starts making more and more money, he'll start putting up more and more patreon exclusive content, in order to give better rewards for those who pay him. Eventually this will mean less and less free content.

And don't tell me that this is not likely to happen; if he was adamant about not paywalling his content then he wouldn't start putting up exclusive content in the first place. Money talks, and everyone else can go screw: that's how the world works, and Area is one of the few artists good enough that he can get away with paywalling everything down the road.

I can assure everyone that the message sent out was a fake. It was a message sent out by someone using the name, "Trust Safety", falsely claiming to be a representative of Patreon's Trust and Safety team. Not only did the email's subject line not follow Patreon's traditional format, but the email body also did not have Patreon's email template. The email had modified sender information to make it appear as if it were sent by guidelines@Patreon.com. This is a typical phishing strategy to scare people, and the email used traditional phisher scare tactics by threating to take action within 24 hours of sending out the email. This is not a tactic that a professional company like Patreon would use, especially not via email when they have other forms of communication built into their site that they can actually confirm verification of receipt.

Delving into the email source/header showed that it was sent out by a Gmail account with an IP that does not match any Patreon IP. It was also very easy to figure out that Patreon does not use Gmail as they use the Mandrill app, which is a paid email service that requires SPF and DKIM records as well as verification of ownership of the domain before they can send emails. They then have to use a special Mandrill API or an SMTP integration to send out their emails. This is not possible to do with public domains like Gmail.com in the mix so that alone disqualifies the email as legit. I paid the email no more than 1% of my attention after viewing this information, and even that was only because I never assume anything 100% until after the fact. Considering I am now about 42 hours into my "24 hour deadline" with no followup I have turned my 99% certainty into 100%. This is just a phishing troll trying to scare artists into taking down their Patreon pages.
