I don't really know why it became such a boom.
In general it is a good show. People were expecting some silly and dumb girly girly thing and were presented with an adventure to save the world so the contrast might have helped. Also it have varied characters and the protagonist is a nerd trying to fit in society. Also the character design is pleasant, the animation is smooth and the humor is well done.

Maybe it was the cute nerdy girl trying to fit, a common trait with the not so light hearted "It's not my fault that I'm not popular", the main characters being designed to cover a wide group from girly to tomboy to hyper to shy to nerdy so almost anyone can relate to at least one of them or the contrast between expectations and the real show or even a combination of multiple factors.

First episode was good, despite all expectations. So what started as ironic thread became serious. Got streams and a site on its own really fast. It also became a powerful troll tool, too, so lots of people started to post it just to make people mad.

I got the theory that most just started to watch it so they FINALLY have friends. Their sick, disgusting lifestyle everyone hated them for could be perfectly transferred into being a brony, with the difference that they suddenly had other sick fucks to befriend.
Whenever someone told them how pathetic they are, they used the "But friendship is magic" argument, while secretly fapping over the show and hotgluing the characters.
Not only that, maybe their appeal is that it was meant for little girls and they just love little girls and their stuff... *cough*

I watched the first two seasons and nothing else. Because it was fun, and yes, I enjoyed the asses and quality NSFW and SFW fanart (which died). I enjoyed it when the show was still in Lauren's hands, after it it became dumb and kinda felt like it was just for bronies.
And yes, I made fun of myself liking the show and the merchandise. I didn't take myself seriously. I didn't go to cons. I didn't troll little kids out of the cinema during Equestria Girls and I sure as hell didn't watch obvious marketing stunts like Equestria Girls!
MLP is just consumed by idiots by now, idiots who feel they are suddenly heard and respected through a show for little girls.
