I'm really enjoying Hero Academy currently. Its got alot of mixup in the cast, not just say the main character and his couple of sidekicks cemented together in one clique.
>>90762 >>90763 Wasn't it roughly 80% being the stated percentage of humans with quirks in this setting? People without unusual abilities are the minority here.
Its not only superheroes and villains that have powers, certainly seems possible for there to be police officers who either never wanted to be a superhero, failed at that whole business and took a different career path or who have quirks that weren't so suited to being superheroes.
>>90766 Thats not accurate, many people in normal jobs in the BnHA world would be 'super', like the MC's cute chubby lovable mom who has limited telekinesis.
What's normal in our world is basically being disabled in theirs.
Its possible there's heroes in the series who don't have quirks at all which I'm not commenting on with this post, though they wouldn't have received training at one of these official schools for heroism would they, even people in the support department have quirks like tech girl with the strange eyes.
One of the first things they were taught was to stop holding back to the common baseline like they do in normal society and really understand what they can achieve by using their unique powers in various tasks (to inspire them to think on how they can use their abilities and better control them in the trials they will face as costumed heroes)
If there were quirkless heroes, then Izuku wouldn't have had the idea that without a quirk he could never be a hero. His first little character arc pretty much requires there to be no quirkless heroes.
>>90801 How do people feel about the upcoming official english translation? I don't know their reputation, think the only proper release I've got is the first volume of One Piece bought from a bookshop on an impulse buy, can't remember its quality.
I just love how well Todoroki's established as the top dog in such a short amount of time and yet how human he still seems. I'd love to see some more of vice pres, though. She's ranked 1st in the class, but what we've seen of her isn't really all that impressive and here she's in the background as support again.
Like, it's done as poorly as it can be, but Bleach could have almost been interesting again, the idea of using Ichigo's retarded nonsense abilities to frame him for the murder of the soul king would have been great...if you hadn't fought your way in, every good idea is ruined BEFORE it's implemented, like shit Bleach is a really magical piece of garbage.
>>90841 As someone who doesn't read the manga, I'm more or less indifferent. It's middling is the best way I can describe it. Nothing too noticeably good or bad.
Short of Raku touching his first titty without having a coronary, this has been some pretty status quo breaking shit.
If I had to picture a way to return to the status quo without just undoing everything, she could end up living with him. Between the Yakuza and the Triads having VIPs living there it's not like she'd be unguarded.
>>90841 The teacher character is entertaining, the rest of the characters are boring as sin. The show is like GTO except dumber and with a ludicrous gimmick.
This was a one shot that ran earlier, wasn't it? It feels like I've read it before, but Viz doesn't exactly make it easy to go through your old issues looking for something specific. It reminds me of Kanna from Maple Story.
I feel like Oda doesn't know how to write a good/interesting/engaging female character anymore. Even Nami and Robin are just "there" for funny reaction faces rather than any meaningful character interactions.
>>90861 Like everyone else? You think they've got it bad, look at Sanji (Oh you can't because he hasn't been shown for a few dozen chapters) and Brook. Christ.
>>90862 When she was a villain? Yeah. Same for Franky. Same for Nami. EVERYONE enjoyed better characterization before they joined. Post-join, you vie for good fights and gags. Something that Robin has recently had a good amount of so why you crying.
>>90865 Unfortunately true. It's about Crocod- I mean Doflamingo and the inhabitants of the Kingdom he's terrorizing and the crossover BLEACH character Trafuckouttahere Special Boy D. Waterlawoo.
>>90869 Is that right? Well we had someone on the old /op/ who said the same stuff basically any time he appeared. It just seemed likely that you where him.
Actually, it feels like Hero Academia isn't getting much hype from Viz, which is strange, because they were all about his previous work. I hope next week it at least gets the cover, and not just a minor footnote.
>>90874 They might feel like it'd have a harder time because it's rather competing with Marvel and DC on the Western market than with other manga. And oldschool superheroes might be a tough sell to the Western manga audience, most of which specifically avoid cape comics.
>>90873 Sounds like someone with their head on right. Of course I'm not the only one who dislikes TrafIWroteTheSupernovaInAWeek Now One's D. WorstImportantCharacteroo
GODa is mocking those who think Oda can do no wrong, when he's clearly done so before and continues to.
>>90891 I don't think it's that. I think it's the construction of the faces. Like the mouths look a little off center on several of them, and I feel like some of the eyes that are furthest from the viewer aren't foreshortened quite right.
Even for Bleach, this is terrible, this is exactly what EVERYONE predicted would happen and that it would prove beyond a shadow of a doubt even with some of it's cool ideas, Bleach is 100% unsalvagable.
So, Bleach is now in capable of being defended by anyone ever.
>>90917 you actually seriously imply that it's bad jsut because someone predicted it? It's a great development, and people predicted it because it made sense and allowed a great character to come back.
Kill la Kill could have used more room to breathe and really layout the School Battle Royale stuff instead of that getting squashed into one montage episode for most the club heads. Not much longer just around say about ten more episodes to flesh things out.
>>90930 The Club Presidents were basically your tokusatsu "Monster of the Day", so I didn't mind her plowing through them after getting experience on the early ones.
>>90930 >>90933 I would have preferred they made the boring middle part where they go around Japan conquering other schools into a montage, spread out the Club Presidents to a few more episodes, and overall condense it down to maybe 13 episodes total.
Dude what, school conquest arc was great, it had Takarada and Scarfketsu. If anything they should cut Ragyo and just have it be Ryuko vs Satsuki where the former is chasing the latter around Japan.
>>90939 I agree, though having Satsuki as the protagonist from the outset wouldn't work. Like, maybe introduce some more hints of Satsuki's faceturn early on, then at the midway point she gets taken over by Junketsu and becomes an evil general of Ragyo's until the end.
>>90997 She won't. She's at a complete disadvantage and if the mangaka has Kacchan fail here yet again, he stops being a rival and becomes a joke ( he already kinda is). She might put up a surprisingly good fight, but I doubt it.
>>90999 Todoroki's the rival now, but really I think Urararaka will probably win just because it'd be unexpected. Bakugou is nothing but blunt force and he still needs to learn how to be smart, part of the contest (and that first match between him and Midoriya) has been showing how his lack of effort and clever thinking fucks him over and makes him really easy to beat.
>>91002 Except that he learned after the fight and his talk with Midoriya. He's still a rageaholic and easily provoked, but he does try to analyze the situation and even incorporated his teammates into his attacks during the cavalry battle. He's not quite that one-dimensional. Otherwise he wouldn't be here in the finals and we'd be seeing Uraraka vs Smuglord instead.
>>91012 And he said this was going to be the serious movie, so it's likely going to be played completely straight, unlike super Saiyan God which was slightly tongue in cheek
>>91052 Yeah, that's why he's been trying to do it since 2008. I guess the consistent success of the Marvel movies really helped to finally convince the editors.
>>91052 Has he said what series he's into? I wonder how some of the more niche series like Sandman fare with them. I know Watchmen only had fans there because of the movie.
Anyways, what is up with white haired people and the whiteness of their hair being the result of having fused with part of a god as an infant in order to save their life, conveniently making them the perfect candidate to replace said god in the event of its death? That seems to happen a lot.
>>91082 There were people who didn't realize immediately she'd be moving in with him so she could stay in Japan, when that "plot development" came out? This type of manga can only be milked for all it's worth by having nothing important change.
Battle of Gods was surprising good. Quite amazed by how much it subverted the typical DBZ movie structure. The comedy reminded me of the original Dragon Ball series. Goku losing the fight against Beerus was definitely reminiscent of the message behind the first Budokai arc in DB. Really enjoyed how the film acknowledged that Goku isn't perfect, with his pride being a significant flaw. Along with everyone taking him down a notch when appropriate. Vegeta came out the best in the film; stealing almost every scene.
>>91101 Basically, it's part of the whole tongue in cheek nature of the entire movie. That's why most of the fight is Goku complaining about it until it eventually wears off in the middle.
And yet the next movie is going to play Goku and Vegeta being the strongest and their confrontation with the movie villain completely straight from all accounts, the other heroes will keep on being fodder versus the stupid revived SSJ freiza's fodder.
Its pretty damn lame how the new movie is going even further out of its way to shit on Gohan. Its even making him rely on super saiyan again for no reason despite now crapping on the concept of the different super saiyan forms from the original series. It's kinda like GT all over again.
>>91122 I think it's too early to be saying things like that. If you'll recall, Super Saiyan Gohan was featured heavily in promotional material for Battle of Gods, but only because it looked more iconic; in the actual movie he only uses Super Saiyan during the godhood ritual.
Gohan became a scholar, gave all Earthlings super powers, and retired to bone his wife. I would say he has been well served. See also Krillen hooking up with 18.
>>91157 Vegeta/Bulma was the first (at least because I can't think of any other) great big "It came out of nowhere" pairing in a shounen anime. It sparked the creation of fandoms for every single crazy coupling combination in every shounen afterwards. Thus in turn it is at least partially responsible for every shipping war that has ever been fought since then.
Even if it was the most lovable pairing in the world, that is a sin that can never be forgiven.
>>91169 That's what I like about it! Even though they said this was going to be the more serious movies, there's hints that it'll still be a little bit silly. Like how he's revived into all the chunks Trunks had cut him up into.
You know what would be cool is if instead of that dumb looking thing he unlocked actual other stages. Like, he gets Cooler mode then gets another after that.
Also I was rewatching a bunch of Abridged season 3 and am I the only one that finds 17/18's treatment of 16 weirdly heartwarming? It's like the Iron Giant with space monkey hunting.
>>91179 The biobroly is actually one of the more original dbz movies.
Hell goku doesn't stick his nose in at all in fighting the villain, not even to take screentime to to appear as a ghost and save the day.
That and the biobroly clone being a freakish muck monster instead of just that shitty character played straight easily elevates it above the second broly movie.
>>91237 These new movies are literally just making super saiyan recolored fanart forms. Also it turns out you were wrong about Gohan since totally got jobbed and made to use basic supersaiyan just so he could get stomped easily, Piccolo got it badly too.
>>91238 >"Kuririn’s arrest of two thugs is interrupted by a call from Bulma. He hurries home to prepare, where he puts on his dōgi, and gets No. 18 to shave his head. He tells his wife and daughter to stay safe. As he flies away, No. 18 whispers, “So cool….”"
>>91244 >>91247 >>91246 If anything 18 should be the one going into battle since she's stronger than Krillin? The scene is slightly dumb and it might even seem a little out of character for 18 to react that way but its not really a big deal, there's bigger issues with the writing of the film seen in the Synopsis than that.
That seems about right. It's feels somewhat Naruto-esque and people have a Naruto shaped hole in their hearts they want something to fill it in. Still wanted to know if that guy actually punched that girl in the chest so hard it stopped her heart.
Eh, I'd have rather had Battle Satellite, it wasn't enormously original but the art was way better and it had decent fight scenes. Black Clover was a snoozefest all the way through.
>>91244 >>91246 >>91249 Yeah it super sucks that they're not only doubling down on "only Goku can beat the villain" but "if you have a vagina you don't get to do anything," on top of awful shit like Piss Freeza and the basic premise itself.
It COULD still be okay, Battle of the Gods looked like shit because the marketing only talked about the (shitty) fight but it was only like, 15 minutes of the movie. But it's not likely.
>>91273 We all knew it was going to be bad when it was announced to be the serious business movie for everyone who hated how silly battle of gods was. But what if you like Dragonball silly? Kudos for those guys who wrote a fan song the author loved so much that he based a major motion picture on it though.
It might also be a mandate from morons at Shueisha. I have a friend who does manga translation, and you wouldn't believe how often she has to use an absolutely idiotic glossary of names and terms because that's how the previous release translated them, and the micromanaging Japanese client insists on maintaining continuity with them.
Oh right, I remember now. The only interest I had in Black Clover was seeing how quickly the main character's overpowered ability makes things super boring.
>internal organs poisoned with radiation (that he's stitching together with his string power because... that's how radiation works?) >has complete control of an island-spanning bird cage >able to use Haki for defense and attacks >"We'd only get in Luffy's way!" from Nico fucking Robin
And then this. Dressarossa has been working on my last nerve. I don't remember Alabasta being this exhaustive.
Dressarosa is indeed gonna be one of the worst arcs and nobody is gonna argue otherwise, I have zero connection to it and it's characters, that said I'm more interested in this than I am anything else because since it's a Luffy power up it will be somewhat interesting.
Gears aren't Super Sayian which are boring color changes and just strength ups, they are generally creative variations on his central rubber abilities. I dunno, it's been a 6 months to a year since I cared about one piece so I at least hope this is interesting.
>>91291 I like it more than Skypeia at least. Now those where characters I didn't care about. The only thing I don't particularly like about Dressrosa is the amount of characters he shoved into it. There's just too many to give anything more than a slight gag for character. Which Oda has loved to do for ages, but there becomes a point where there's just too many at once, and all the charm of the character gimmicks get lost amongst themselves. Particularly for the Strawhat crew themselves, who seem to have been just going with the flow sense the time skip. In a lot of ways, this arc is like a condensed Baroque Works arc, but lacking in the interesting character developments.
I think what we need is some strong disclosure as to what happened with the main crew in those two years. Because as it is, they kind of feel distant.
Dressrosa's fine, we're just at the point in the arc where it's almost over and we're ready for it to be done. Oda always has arcs overstay their welcome slightly for people like us who tune in every week for a morsel.
>>91420 Because it's still a shonen after all. And it's probably another "drains your life expectancy" things that poses no actual threat, but just gives a fairly reasonable limiter on how often they do it.
Anyway, I like it. Just the sort of silly power up I like to see from this series.
>>91421 Yes, I love how even if they went full grimdark serious business, the series would still be a little silly because the main character's abilities are inherently silly.
Why are you people all paying attention silly childish powerlevel nonsense instead of a real manga full of intense character drama and heart-tearing emotion?
>>91426 She actually is the best, I've now liked her the most out of all the epilogue kids. Her parents might be terrible unlikable characters but she is not, you can really empathize with her situation and her natural reactions to it, also you feel for her with how assholish/insane her parents have acted so far.
>>91501 It's becoming a favorite, but it's so early it's hard to say anything for sure. I absolutely love the cast, and Deku and All Might are both incredibly refreshing and entertaining main characters. All Might especially might be one of the best characters I've seen come out of manga in years.
The art and characters are a bit better than normal but other than that it's a pretty bog standard WSJ series and so will probably have gone sour on us by chapter 100.
I guess it did manage to bring me back to reading a battle shounen for once so good on it I guess?
TOKYO (April 28, 2015) – Toei Animation has announced production on Dragon Ball Super (Japanese title; tentative for English release), the first all-new Dragon Ball television series to be released in 18 years. Following the recent events of the hit feature film, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, Dragon Ball Super will debut in Japan in July 2015.
Reuniting the franchise’s iconic characters, Dragon Ball Super will follow the aftermath of Goku’s fierce battle with Majin Buu, as he attempts to maintain earth’s fragile peace. Overseen by Dragon Ball’s original creator, Akira Toriyama and produced with Fuji Television, Dragon Ball Super will draw on its historic past to create a bold, new universe welcoming to fans and endearing to new viewers.
Thought never occurred to me that DBZ Super could air outside of CN, but it make sense that it could. Even if you're clueless on anime, DBZ is well known for its incredible popularity in the U.S.
It could, but I’d like to think the relationship between CN/AS/Toonami and Funimation would make it far less likely. I could definitely see Nickelodeon making a real play for it, though.
>>91519 Toei would have the most say in this, though. I could see Viacom biding and airing Dragon Ball Super on Spike or MTV. The CW is another possibility. Even Fox/FX is a possibility.
Regarding Funimation, I could see them doing their Dub Broadcast for the streaming site. Or, work out a Space Dandy deal with a TV Network.
I'll believe it when I see it. Kai was done so cheaply that its only saving grace was that Funimation actually tried with their English dub and made it good.
Nah, I just can't see that. It wouldn't fit in with any of their programming. It'd come down to Nick or CN/AS/Toonami, and I'd consider the latter as the frontrunner.
This is stupid, they don't call Guy by the name Maito Gai anymore so why should they be calling Bolt by Boruto? Like I get the wordplay so obviously spelled out by the altered logo but what the hell.
And spoilers for that Naruto Gaiden manga but it seems like Uchiha bullshit is going to be fucking everywhere once again, and related to it is Neo-Akatsuki
It was interesting seeing people make the most of powers that seemed silly by using them in inventive ways, but now out of nowhere they've introduced a Super Paramecia 2 for no reason but a power level gimmick-hype, thats awful.
>>91574 It opened the possibility for more interesting fights down the road. Could have been done a bit better though. Part of me thinks that it was a last minute addition from Oda feeling inspired and wanting to introduce the concept before the next arc.
>>91570 Well, it makes sense with Crocodile's secondary ability and the Awakened Zoans. Honestly I think this is just attributing a name to something that we already assumed Devil Fruits could do.
>>91576 I more or less agree, but here's the thing:
I SERIOUSLY doubt this is the end for Doflamingo. Dressrosa, yes, but with Kaido around the corner, Doflamingo never being seen without his glasses even once, CP0, and the whole "Tenryubito treasure" subplot being untouched, I wouldn't be surprised if Doflamingo up and leaves.
Having to explain his failure to an even bigger fish would be a good fate, methinks.
>>91270 Zolo is cool. More unique and less on the nose.
>>91284 >Dramatic Final Confrontation >Luffy known to take advantage of his body's odd physiology in surprising ways >Out of Nowhere
>>91286 Having no connection (good or bad) to anyone with such a large and varied cast of characters introduced in Dressrossa is most likely a failing of your own. Dofa's family, Rosinante, Sr. Pink, Baby 5, Dellinger, new Bellamy, Cavendish, Bartolomeo, Kyros, Rebecca, Ideo, Sai, Chinjao, Hajrudin, Elizabello II, Leo and the other Tontatta,Fujitora. If you didn't grow to like or hate any of these heroes or villains, maybe it's just time to give up your dream of finding One Piece.
>>91417 >>91419 It's a fantastic "Angry but goofy" form. I adored it the instant it was leaked on /a/. I hope with all my salty heart that it comes complete with stupid sound effects. You expect it to be all bad ass right? But I want ridiculous "BOING!" and Rubber Band noises.
>>91570 Nah. Awakened Zoans were prelude to this, as was Trebol now in hindsight. I would have preferred it stayed with Zoans, to keep them special, but they also got Mythical tier so it's probably better there's an Awakened state for all Types instead of Zoans getting two, and Chopper's advancements. Perhaps there's something unique to Paramecia and Logia a la Mythical Zoan?
>>91574 >Arc Climax with long standing antagonist and objectively most powerful fought thus far >needlessly long But I can't blame you too much. I've wanted Sanji to show up and Zoro on Hody Jones Doflamingo for a while now.
>>91586 >No glasses Doffy Will you fags cut this shit out? It means nothing to see Doflamingo's eyes. Look at Kakashi's face reveal above. Look at Sanji's hair flip swap post Time Skip. No one was like "We never saw Vergo without food on his face, he's far from done."
It'll probably be the end of Donflamingo for at least as long as Crocodile, Buggy, Enel, Rob Lucci were/will be gone.
>>91270 "Zolo" was never a mistranslation, it was an intentional change to avoid getting sued by the people who own the trademark and copyright on Zorro in the West. Viz kept it because they also do not want to get sued.
>>91588 I concur. I missed the ship to Doflamingo town when it left long ago, and nothing's ever brought me on board since. He's ridiculously powerful even before it was revealed he was Awakened Paramecia and his arc is too similar to Alabasta and Fishman Island in theme (Shichibukai usurps control of a nation, Luffy and friends confront him on the side of the true and benevolent king).
What it has done great though, is world build. Jesus Christ the world building has been spectacular since Punk Hazard and hasn't stopped yet.
>>91587 I'm hardly trying to to DoFAGmingo (geddit? GEDDIT!?) things up here, just noting that it's odd that Oda would have a major arc villain never seen without sunglasses despite flashbacks across his life and not somehow turn it into at least a minor point. Think of it as figuring out what Jones's steroids actually were... it'd be odd if Oda never addressed it. But yeah, it's not like Crocodile's hook or Moria's neck wound were ever explained.
But forget that. Sure, it's irrelevant. What I'm really curious about is the "Tenryubito's greatest treasure", how Doflamingo blackmailed them with it, and what CP0 has to do with fucking anything.
>>91555 Oh wow! Is this an ending ending or a we're getting cancelled ending because I was really liking this. It's like reading Phoenix Wright but in anime school.
We should really have a primer about which series run in Jump. People keep talking about non-Jump series in this thread and talk about actual Jump series in the General. In other news, some editor seems to have messed up and accidentally put some pages from a 90's indie comic in Hero Academia.
>>91651 Considering that that's when Luffy's from too, then the point still stands. He doesn't have a demon trapped inside (Devil Spirit doesn't count) or is half ghost or whatever.
Does anyone here even read Shounen that started post 2000?
>>91650 He does however have a traumatic childhood, can't forget that. Otherwise Luffy is an incredibly admirable ShouHero. He's only on the wrong side of the law because the law is on the wrong side to begin with. Pirate, criminal, is a profession taken because it allows him freedom and that's what he values above all for himself and for others.
It's a low-budget Toei anime, directed by someone who doesn't know how to gracefully cover for a lack of budget. And for some reason they ordered fifty episodes of a series with less than eighty chapters at the time, so it's stretched out and padded even more than the budget would suggest.
It's straight up a downgrade from the manga in every way except for editing out Jin grabbing women's butts.
>>91682 Some people are claiming it will be revealed that Sasuke had a genjutsu put on himself to make him forget about his family in order to "protect them". Which is also the reason he's not been in contact for 12 years despite having multiple methods of communication and super powers that would make it effortless.
Of course even if that was the case it will be complete bullshit, since Sakura and the people of Konoha made absolutely no effort to hide the child's identity. Sakura still goes about everywhere telling people she's married to Sasuke, their house and clothing are casually festooned with the Uchiha crest and to top it off her name is Sarada Uchiha.
I like her powers, they are more classic superhero than other examples, probably seems that way because she can actually fly in addition to being strong and the other stuff.
>>91719 Yeah, if you are gonna give your character a power that revolves around eyes and peculiar vision a good idea is to establish it's limits so it doesn't seem like pulling shit out of nowhere, like another shonen series featuring eye powers.
