Rule of Rose thread!

>what is this?
A cult classic 2006 ps2 videogame.
It was ordered by Sony, produced by Punchline and published by Atlus.
>who?
Punchline, they also made Chulip on the ps2, another very cool game.
The company was comprised of the former Love-de-Lic members aka people behind Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, UFO: A Day in the Life, and L.O.L.: Lack of Love .
Unfortunately this was the last game they made.
>why?
It was caught in a slander campaign by some italian politician who demonized it claiming it had all kinds of bad sexual and unchristiant content... which it didn't.
But nonetheless all of europe went up in arms about it and called for it to be banned.
Thankfully everyone with eyes could see that it was just bogus made up by some boomer, except for UK... the UK pulled the game off because it's UK.
>well what is the game about?
Think silent hill 2.
But with girls.
And instead of the town it's an airship.

But anyway who cares about all that preamble, we're here for 1 of 2 reasons, either the absolute cinema story or uoooh.
There might potentially be a remaster or at least a port.
And Meg is best girl.

Not too long ago I was thinking "Rule of Rose isn't popular enough to have a thread on plus4chan." Guess I was wrong.
I just beat the game earlier this month (the moment I reached the credits, a Rule of Rose thread on /v/ died; got unlucky... how ironic), and yesterday I finished my second play-through to get the stuff I missed.
It has become one of my favorite games. I really like the characters, the menus, the music... everything, really. Even the game play, which some people dislike, I think is fine and enjoy, though I must admit the game was frustrating at times during the first half of my first play-through.

Here are some ways the game could be improved:
>Improve combat by having better hit detection and preventing Jennifer from getting 'stuck' (since the enemies usually come in swarms, you will often face situations where they just beat the crap out of Jennifer and you can't really do much about it, especially if she is in a corner of a room). Make it easier to avoid such situations by making Jennifer safe from being grabbed/knocked over/hit again for a short period of time after getting hit.
>Make the revolver actually useful. It is shown a fair bit in promotional material and in the intro cut-scene, but most players will likely never use it, since it is hidden behind a secret room that can only be opened near the end of the game. It is also incredibly weak, and the fact that there aren't that many bullets and that you have to go out of your way to find them makes it even worse. I would fix it by either introducing it a bit earlier, making it so fewer bullets are needed to kill enemies and/or make the bullets come in packs (basically instead of getting only one bullet per pickup, you would get at least three; 'Jennifer found Bullet (x3)')
>Adjust Brown's path-finding mechanic a little. It actually works nicely, but in a few rare instances he will run into an obstacle or wall and then stop looking for the item, most notably in the 1st Passenger Corridor and in Sector 7 Cargo Bay.
>A way to return to the main menu. Maybe I'm dumb but I don't think there's such an option — if there is, it isn't immediately clear. Not that there are many reasons to come back to the main menu, but you know, it would be nice if the game had that option.

>Unfortunately this was the last game they made.
Going through the game's wiki on Fandom, I read they made some other game; 'The Black Bird' I believe it's called. Apparently it even has a few references to Rule of Rose towards the end. They released it under Orion Games instead of Punchline though, but I believe several people who worked on Rule of Rose were involved in the production of that game.
It's a shame we didn't get more games from Punchline.
>And Meg is best girl.
I have a hard time calling anyone but Jennifer "best girl." Nearly everyone but her is batshit insane. Initially I thought Eleanor was quite nice, because despite participating in all the cruel stuff, she didn't act as rude as Diana and Meg. However after re-watching the FMVs, I changed my mind. She isn't THAT much better than the other girls, she is just introverted. Still one of my favorite characters, though. Clara is also nice... poor girl. Out of all the boys, Nicholas is the least troublesome, from what I remember. Screw Xavier for causing the power outage and screw Thomas especially, that fool does nothing but lock you in rooms with Imps.
Anyway, sorry for rambling.
TL;DR: Cool game. Very cool, even. Could make with some improvements regarding combat and the addition of quality-of-life features. Punchline were great developers. Everyone in this game is insane... though probably not as insane as the people who wanted this game banned in the EU.

>The Black Bird
Yes that was Onion Games, I meant their second and last game as Punchline.
It has some shared staff yeah but not that many.
>I have a hard time calling anyone but Jennifer "best girl."
Well yeah if we're talking strictly story then sure, I just meant more based on looks.
Meg is real cute.

I'm glad you enjoyed it but yeah I thought it'd be nice to have a thread on it here while 4 was down but unfortunately there wasn't anyone else in the downtime lol.
And now it's back up.

>I meant their second and last game as Punchline.
Real shame they didn't get to make more games. At least I haven't played Chulip yet, so there's still more Punchline kino for me to enjoy. Seems like an unique, oddball kind of game. I think I might check out the Orion stuff later, I want to see references to Rule of Rose in The Black Bird first-hand.
>Well yeah if we're talking strictly story then sure, I just meant more based on looks.
Sorry for overcomplicating things. Well, in that case...

Honestly, I wasn't expecting the site to come back up so soon. I was hoping a few more anons would've replied to this thread. I actually don't even enjoy posting much but saw the thread slowly drowning and couldn't just let it die in shame.
Even if the thread didn't really get anywhere, thanks for making it. /cog/ doesn't seem to get much traffic compared to some of the other boards, so seeing a Rule of Rose thread was a nice surprise.

Really?
Not my style but I can respect the unusual choice.
Don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about her.
Chulip is great though, if you're into atmospheric worlds with kind of a mix of cozy japanese countryisde and surreal late night fever dream feel to it.
If you played Moon then it's very similar, basically a pseudo sequel to it.
I'll probably make a rule of rose thread on 4 soon, they usually peter out at about 100 posts or so but sometimes they last longer (or shorter if mods decide to kill, that happened a few times when hornyposting got dominant), so come by.

Anon... I was just joking. Though I will say despite being very weird most of the time, I do kinda feel bad for her, since she was the main target of all the crap the club did.
By Moon I assume you mean Harvest Moon. Either way, I haven't played it. Chulip captured my attention before I played Rule of Rose or knew they were made by the same developers, so I will likely enjoy it.
Just saw the thread on the catalog, I hope it doesn't die too fast.

It ended up dying pretty fast.
By moon I meant
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1714580/moon_Remix_RPG_Adventure/
Made by the same person involved in chulip/rule of rose at punchline and now working at onion games.
Before this he worked at love-de-lic where he made moon.

Didn't even hit 100 replies, that's unfortunate. Someone mentioned trying to extract stuff from the game in the thread, I wanted to see if he was able to do it. Still a good thread though, there was some nice discussion.

Ah, I see. You even mentioned it in the OP, I forgot. Definitely haven't played it, but I've seen the game before. The protagonist instantly reminded me of Rayman. Since it first released in 1997 and the first Rayman game was released in 1995, it was likely a source of inspiration for the design.
Looking through their Steam page that seems to be their most interesting game, I like the art style.
Mon Amour is definitely inspired by Chulip, since the main goal seems to be kissing everyone in the kingdom.
Dandy Dungeon - Legend of Brave Yamada - seems to mostly be it's own thing but I noticed that it uses a flower effect similar to Chulip's.
>Once upon a time,
>Lived a sad and pitiful child.
Black Bird's trailer has a clear reference to Rule of Rose. Looks interesting.
I wonder why UFO: A Day in the Life and L.O.L.: Lack of Love aren't on Steam, though.

Nyes.
>Someone mentioned trying to extract stuff from the game in the thread
I've also been trying that, I can extract the models and textures, but the geometry is weird.
In the preview for the ripper program (noesis) it looks fine but once imported into any software it gets very boxy and sharp with no way to smooth it and I don't really know why?
That and the transparent textures don't display, the hair, eyebrows, and dress transparent parts just become black.
Moon is very much a proto chulip, it has a longer intro but once you get settled into understanding how it works they are very similar.
>I wonder why UFO: A Day in the Life and L.O.L.: Lack of Love aren't on Steam, though.
Probably too niche to warrant the work it would require to get them up since they probably won't sell enough to cover it.
Kinda sad but they're still emulatable.

Extracting models from 5th and 6th gen games can be a bit of a pain, from what I've heard. They come out all wonky and you have to do extra work for them to come out right. The best course of action is to look up what extra work other games needed and see if it works for Rule of Rose as well.
I remember this model viewer website for Silent Hill 2, named Silent Hill Museum. Apparently the person behind the website had to reverse-engineer each model. Sounds annoying. That was for the PC version, though.
I might have a crack at it. I have never worked with ripper or model viewer programs before, but it's worth a try.
>Probably too niche
That was my first guess. Looking it up it seems both games only released in Japan. L.O.L.: Lack of Love only released on the Dreamcast too, so it's definitely niche. At least it has a fan translation.

Someone sorted the files a while ago if you want to poke around.
Rule of Rose 3D models CHARA ACTIONyoutube thumb
You need the action file.
Noesis you can find on google, I think the guy's site is rich something.
You'll need to export the TM2 texture files with it to png or something to be useable, can just right click them in the viewer.
so you'll have the .obj for the model, all the png textures and .mtl that links textures to materials.
You'll need to rename the files so they match the ones in .mtl which can be viewed with notepad.
For transparency I figured out you can connect the alpha node in blender bsdf but it somehow becomes very faint and blurry so I don't think it's a great solution. (blender can also do okay smoothing with just right click smooth)
But that's as far as I got.
If you figure out something I haven't then leave an update if you want.
