I actually thought this was a great E3. Lots of great games covering a wide variety of genres in both Microsoft, Sony, EA's, and Ubisoft's presentations. It doesn't matter what kind of games you enjoy playing, I think it'd be easy to find something for you on some platform this year. Lookin' forward to seeing what's Nintendo brings tomorrow! They like to play things close to the vest, so I never know what to expect.
ATTENTION FANS: history is our playground and the possibilities are endless. you have told us your opinions and we have heard you LOUD AND CLEAR, and this year, we at ubisoft bring you not one, not two, not even three but fOUR WHITE MEN WITH STUBBLE
>Hyrule Warriors releases Sept 26, Midna and Zelda are playable characters (with others teased.) >Zelda Wii U is scheduled for 2015. Aonuma says he wants to return to a massive, non-linear, open world, ala the very first Zelda. >X's official name is Xenoblade Chronicles X (how clever) and will be released in 2015. >Nintendo is making an online, multiplayer (only?) game titled Splatoon where the goal is to use paintball guns to cover the world in your paint. And you can turn into a squid to climb walls you've painted. Releasing 2015 >Mario Maker is a Mario-level editor, but only for the assets from the original SMB (can be swapped to NSMBU style.) Release 2015. Zelda will certainly be delayed until 2016. However, XCX is more than enough to make me buy a Wii U, so I guess 2015 is the year I will get one (assuming that isn't pushed back, too.) I'll have a few titles of interest to pick up by then as well, like SSB and Hyrule Warriors.
Legitimately excited for Bloodborne and I'm probably gonna buy a PS4 just for that. New Zelda looked neat. Kinda sad that there were no Vita announcements, but that's pretty much expected at this point.
>Return to the original massive Open-World Zelda >Yoshi: Wolly World has focus on inventive level exploration >Bayonetta 2 comes with the original version too >Midna in Hyrule warriros >Splatoon >Palutena >Mii Fighter actually looks like fun
fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that was pretty good, if short.
Okay I'm gonna be making some enemies here but... WAS I THE ONLY ONE REALLY DISAPPOINTED IN THAT NINTENDO SHOWING?
I mean what new games were announced?
The Toad One? Okay sure whatever. New Canvas Curse? Thanks for that. Splatoon Game looks fun but I feel like it's a game you could just as easily find on PSN or XBLA. Mario Maker was something I feel like is 2-3 years overdue with releasing 4 different NSMB games (honestly more excited for LBP3 than I am this) And new Zelda. YEA! Oh we don't even get a title and it's pretty clearly a prerendered cinematic. Thanks for that.
I mean we got to see more of shit we already knew was out there. Bayo 2, X, Hyrule Warriors and Smash but my first thought when Reggie said the thing was over was just "Really? That's it!?"
>>187785 You're not alone. I mean, I didn't felt disappointing, but I'm neither impressed as well. Nintendo was really predictable on their presentation, we all knew they'll talk about Zelda, Bayonetta, anything Mario related and Smash. And aside that, there wasn't that much to show.
All three console makers had good shows this year. Only EA and Ubisoft were the ones that goofed. If the message behind Microsoft's presentation was "Give us another chance. We'll show you we're all about video games," than Sony's was "Why give 'em a chance, when you got all these good things here and more." With no major third-party support coming, Nintendo only had to make sure their dedicated audience remains happy, and I believe they did that today.
What is considered "major third-party support" because, I mean, they've got games like Sonic Boom (SEGA), Monster Hunter 4 (Capcom), Bayonetta 2 (Platnium), Devil's Third (Valhalla)... along with Xenoblade (Monolith Soft), Disney Infinity (Avalanche/Heavy Iron Studios), and not even counting all of the third party games for the 3DS. I get that the popular narrative is that Nintendo doesn't have third party support, but looking at their youtube page of all the games coming out sure makes it seems like they have plenty of third-party support...
Nintendo fans often dismiss this by saying it's a quality vs. quantity thing, but it isn't. Wii U isn't getting Arkham Knight, which is a big kicker since WB showed strong support early on.
Okay, but what about the third party games the Wii U gets but Sony and Microsoft don't? Do they not count? Is the argument that because it's on the PC, PS4/3, and Xbone/360 it is detrimental that it is not also on the Wii U, but third party games that are for the Wii U but no other platform doesn't offset this?
>>187792 Is that another godamn 64 remake? ... fuck it. FINE. I'll buy it and a WiiU again. I don't even fucking care I just want my Starfox. Between that and the skylanders type shit they have with SmashU I might actually be able to indulge in my favorite Nintendo series.
>>187800 They count, but they're not as plentiful as there should be. And the big exclusives Nintendo has gotten from third-parties haven't been the best. ZombiU and Sonic Lost World both received mediocre reviews. The Wonderful 101 scored decently, but the game's misstep in controls cost it. And, personally, I don't have high hopes for Sonic Boom.
However, Bayonetta 2 is looking good and the first game coming with the retail version is a big plus. Don't know much about Devil's Third, but the trailer paints it as an unconventional Nintendo game, which is what they need. Unfortunately, it's probably because it's not a typical Nintendo game that Devil's Third didn't show up on the E3 show.
They announce a freaking open world Zelda and everyone's obsessed with how feminine he looks. other than that, the rest of their games are a day 1 buy for me. Love what they're doing with Kirby and Yoshi, and the Toad games where some of my favorite parts from 3D world. Super pumped for this year.
>>187802 It's going to be a unique thing, it's just so early in development that it's currently running entirely off of filler assets from 64. It's important to make sure the game itself is fun first, then you can add all the graphics and story.
>>187798 I can't think of a single game Ubisoft has made that I would ever want to play, so Ubisoft not making games on Nintendo is a big "who cares" for me.
>>187816 Anyone else think the Nintendo clothing looks off here? Even with the realistic details, it still clashes with Bayonetta's art style. I didn't feel this way when Tekken did it, but the game embraced the goofiness of it all.
The problem I have is that her outfits are sort of bending the line between being legitimate alt costumes for Bayonetta and being silly goofy stuff from Nintendo properties. As such it kinda winds up feeling like she's wearing a female Halloween costume of Link or Princess Peach.
And her Samus costume feels like "what if Blizzard made Metroid".
>>187835 >effectively 5 new characters announced today IT KEEPS HAPPENING!
Also customization info: http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2014/jun/10/each-characters-has-12-special-move-variations-choose-super-smash-bros-wii-u3ds-information-about-character-customization/
I think a lot of people expected Pacman considering who nintendo partnered with on this, but it's good to see him. Hope Snakes moves can be brought back in some way.
Still salty about the lack of StarFox this year... again.
>>187837 Well, at least we've got a solid confirmation that it's going to exist. As sad as it might be, even if they've gotten the gameplay super tight right now, it would probably harm the game to show it now with all the placeholder graphics and audio. I'm just glad Shiggy Miggy himself is working on it, that guy knows when you need to keep excessive storytelling out of what is supposed to be a fun arcade experience.
>>187837 >Still salty about the lack of StarFox this year... again. They seem to be doing something with it. An experiment with gyro controls and episodic content from what I hear.
Anyway, what I'm looking forward to on a scale of pure hype. 1 is some interest, 5 is deeply invested:
Xbone: -Sunset overdrive (3/5) Looks fun, but seems to teeter on the border of obnoxious and playfully cheesy. Not enough to make me buy one, but if I ever do, they'll probably be on my list.
PS4: -The order 1886 (3/5) Not sure about the gameplay, but I have something of a fetish for the setting and the look is fantastic. -Little Pig Blanket 3 (3/5) If the control's tighter than the past entries, it'll be on my list of things to get. -Bloodborne (5/5) Again, the setting. But this time from a company I really trust to have great gameplay. This is what's convincing me to get a PS4.
WiiU: -Hyrule Warriors (4/5) Never played a DW game, but I'm a slave to Zelda, so... Doesn't hurt that it's flashy and interestingly designed. -Toads Treasure Tracker (5/5) Fuck. Yes. -SSB (3/5) I'll get it. Looks to be going in the right direction. -Yoshi's Woolly World (4/5) Cute as fuck, loved Epic Yarn, Yoshi story style gameplay. -Bayoneta 2+1 (2/5) Wasn't going to bother as I never played 1, but now I can so...why not? -Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (5/5) Love claymation, loved Canvas Curse. -Zelda WiiU (★) Open world. I want nothing more. -Mario Maker (1/5) Neat. -Squidgirls (1/5) Usually not a huge fan of team shooters, but the whole ink thing might make it interesting.
Multiplat/PC: -Evolve (1/5) Again, usually not a huge fan of team shooters but the aesthetic is keeping me fairly interested. -Ori and the Blind Forest (3/5) Crazy pretty, and I do love metroidvanias. -Inside (2/5) Love the look and I liked Limbo. -Tomb Raider 2 (2/5) I enjoyed Tomb Raider, but if this has more tombs, I'll be more interested. -Cuphead (3/5) That art!
As usual Nintendo has me by the balls. In spite of an overall mediocre past 2 years.
How many games does it take before its worth buying a console? I had sworn off consoles after the likes of Xbone and other debacles of the NextGen and was going to stick to my laptop for gaming.
This game might be another dynasty warriors spinoff but it is becoming highly appealing to me, for reasons.
>>187855 E3 has always been very console-centric. I guess it's because E3 is still very much focused on retail and retail is a miniscule part of the already somewhat smaller PC market.
>>187856 It's gonna be like every other Dynasty Warrior game. For the first two hours you're gonna go: "Holy shit! This is so much fun! How is everybody always talking shit about these games?!" and then in hour 3: "Yeah ok, getting really fucking bored now..."
I am totally stoked for all the Zelda stuff I've been seeing. Between Hyrule Warriors and the new Zelda title, which is gaining my interest in a way Skyward Sword never did, I am thinking I may just get a WiiU after all. It doesn't hurt that Zelda's been my all time favorite Nintendo series of all time. I may just pick up Smash Bros (Already getting it on 3DS), Nintendoland, and Bayonetta 2 while I'm at it. It helps that Bayonetta 1 is packaged with Bayonetta 2. Maybe I'll pick up that new Mario Kart while I'm at it. Eventually.
Decent E3 so far, though the only two streams I watched were Sony (caught live after work) and Nintendo (archive, ROBOT CHICKEN NINTENDO WHAT) and I just saw the lists for the others.
-Far Cry 4 MAY be the first good non-Blood Dragon Far Cry because that was just first person Just Cause 2 based on what they showed us -Pretty much everything Nintendo's got for their main stable series looked good except Pokemon (which after not doing post game stuff in BW and not finishing XY I know I just don't care about anymore), Hyrule Warriors has fucking MIDNA and the best Link/Zelda designs (though it's still Warriors and can still totally be trash), Zelda WiiU has octbots, Mario Maker nice etc -Xenoblade Chronicles could go either way. On the one hand, dinosaurs and mechs. On the other hand, Xenoblade turned to trash in the back half and they've brought Nopons back. -New Phantom Pain trailer sucked but that game will probably still be good. -That Squid shooter looks neat but shouldn't be more than 20 bucks -Despite that disgusting, Nisio tier short hair Bayo, packing both games in the retail release is cool and the Nintendo costumes are dumb in a pretty good way -That fucking shot of Batman rocketing into the sky -BLOODBORNE -Type-0 HD will finally let me learn why people rave about it so much. -GRIM FANDANGO -Journey was radical so hopefully that new thing (Abzu iirc) can match it. -That Magicka 2 trailer says Magicka can still totally be funny -I still want to know how No Man's Sky works.
>>187858 Actually I can play them for a fairly long time, especially if its an interesting plot in the spinoff that doing new stuff instead of the same ROTK plotline of DW.
Although the fact they can only be played in the profoundly retarded "friends only" options is a major strike against them.
Nintendo needs to figure out how to do lobbies or something where you can pick what things you want in your match; like items on or off, what stages you want to play on, and if "custom" characters are allowed or not.
They're jerking off customization options pretty hard, but if you don't have people to play against locally you're fucked.
And why the hell isn't Battlefield in the rotation for the competitive playlist?
Long story short; Nintendo half asses yet another thing. And to think they where so close to creating a truly fantastic experience.
>>187870 I don't know when I offended you, but as for the Nopons, I thought they were adorable until they actually got voice acting and forced one into my party (who, fortunately, I never had to actually USE).
>>187864 >Although the fact they can only be played in the profoundly retarded "friends only" options is a major strike against them.
As long as you can use them in local multiplayer I'll be happy.
I think the decision to have 3 separate characters that are all Miis is a pretty bad one though. I'd be fine with one Mii character, but spending 3 character slots on just this is pretty bad when there are so many other Nintendo characters to pick from. On the other hand, all 3 actually look like a lot of fun to play as, so I'm kind of conflicted in regards to how I feel about them.
Pacman looks fucking amazing though. Those Galaga and Mappy specials, that running attack, god damn. I was totally indifferent about this game after Palutena and the Miis, but that Pac trailer has redeemed this game in my eyes.
>>187872 I didn't really use Riki until the late half, but if you pair his commands properly he can be pretty top tier, especially in healing/buffing IIRC.
Which reminds me: I was 140 hours in Xenoblade, had completed pretty much all side-quests, almost completed the field guide thing, was a few levels shy of the cap, and was pretty sure I was about to take the teleporter to the final boss fight... and then I put the game down after weeks of playing it every night and haven't gone back. I still love the game, so I don't know why I haven't beaten it. @_@
>>187888 Sakurai said they've got all different attacks, not just different specials, so even if they share a slot it'd be like Pokemon trainer where it's still 3 characters worth of development.
And yeah everything about Pacman is perfect. I'm looking forward to him more than any other character, even Mega Man.
S.T.E.A.M. looks really damn interesting and Splatoon seems ok I guess? Nintendo's putting all it's eggs in the Smash Bros basket this year, but they've also got some pretty interesting and new IPs to boot.
Since the Wii I've been constantly let down by Nintendo, but this is restoring my hope. If they can actually land some multiplatform games I'll be down for a WiiU (once StarFox launches).
>>187801 Oh sweet Mercy, I was just watching on the best friends and I though the mountain on the right was Death Mountain, but its actually that mother far off in the fucking background. Also I think you can see the castle way off in the distance. I think that might be the village a little bit to the southwest, but its hard to tell BECAUSE ITS SO FREAKING HUGE!!!!. And if we later get "and this is the Dark World or Lorule" Nintendo, you've just sold yourself a WiiU.
>>187971 http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-12-far-cry-4-almost-had-female-co-op-characters Oh for the love of god Ubisoft. Do we really move that fucking different? I get scaling issues because men and women have slightly different proportions, but it's not like we perpetually think we're on a runway or something.
>>187974 >"And it was purely a workload issue because we don't have a female reading for the character, we don't have all the animations. It was this weird issue where you could have a female model that walked and talked and jumped like a dude." Again, Ubisoft, you're talking about a huge franchise that has plenty of money behind it. You guys couldn't just hire some local librarian to come in and read for a few hours?
Although this makes me hope that video game companies will hurry up in branching out R&D. Graphics have been doing their agonizingly slow crawl out of the uncanny valley for a while now, so companies need to step back from detail for the most part and look to other portions instead. One of these are synthetic voices, so the programmers can use a markup language with the text and a computer generates the voice. At most you'd have one human to do a "real" reading, and then the computer would mimic the inflections and high/lows when generating the other dialects/languages. At first this would be useful in situations like this, where you want the same lines for all characters but the voices to correspond to the body, and just the final lines would be stored; but, later, it could be used in procedurally-generated scenarios, allowing games to have significant branching paths without voices having to be tossed aside.
I still think the real reason is because they can't replicate the breast physics that Dead or Alive has, and Ubisoft must have that technology.
>>187985 Their entire conference was more or less just them being completely aware of what the internet was saying and doing with their IPs and products.
>>188003 Everyone really loves that one. It always caused everyone to cheer. Saturday I tried Mario and Zero Suit Samus. New Zero Suit feels really good, while Mario is still Mario, so I did much better than last time when I was using the new characters.
